Best in DFW

Played 1/27/15, and the course was in great shape. It is January, so grass is not growing right now, but the fairways were overseeded and as good as can be expected. The greens were smooth and fast. I played Colonial two days prior to Cowboys, and Cowboys is in better condition. Even with food included, it's tough to justify $200 for a round of golf, but in my opinion, this place is the best daily fee course in DFW.

Come and play in winter time

I played this course today for the first time and felt great. The temperature was low but because of not much wind it did not feel cold. The fairways and greens are in very good condition for this time of the year. It is a good idea to come here and play in the winter time to avoid crowd and save money booking through Golfnow. Greens are generally fast and some hole locations are difficult. Bunkers are kept well with very nice sand.
The free food/drink is a plus. The catch of the day (salmon) was great. The girl at the bar was extremely friendly and helpful. This is the best public course I have played since I moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area early this year.

A Novelty Course.

This is more like visiting a theme park. If you are going for pure golf reasons prepare to feel like you over paid. It is nice with an exceptional club house but unless I am spending my companies money taking three customers out for a Dallas Cowboy experience, my first visit will be my only Cowboy Golf experience. It's a cool place and I am glad I went. It was not easy mainly because the greens were fast and pin placement was tough. Our day was painfully slow because we started with a 45 minute frost delay. We could have enjoyed the free food and cart goodies more but we over focused on golf scoring. My son and I are competitive and we are more about greens and fairways than clubhouse and food. If you go, relax and enjoy the the Cowboy surroundings, the all you can eat clubhouse restaurant and good ole Texas sized golf score stories.

Greens need to be ripped up

Cowboys is a very nice track—an interesting layout, good conditions for mid-winter (though the tee boxes were a surprising exception: very poor), and friendly staff. My impression of the golf course from tee to green is generally positive. (Note: tee to green. More on this later.)

On the other hand, the pricing is just outrageous; there's no other way to say it. I paid ~$100 on special, which I felt was reasonable if slightly expensive based on the time of year and suboptimal conditions. (I grew up in DFW and now live in DC, which I mention only to give perspective on the fact that I'm very comfortable with paying roughly twice as much in Maryland and Virginia by comparison with typical Dallas prices for comparable courses. I would consider $90–$115 to be about standard in-season.) To pay $220 or $240 at Cowboys – or whatever the normal, un-discounted green fee is – would be just incomprehensible to me, even considering that conditions are presumably much, much better in the warmer month. It's a nice golf course, the "free" (included) stuff is nice, and they do make an effort to make the player feel looked-after. But it's not anywhere close to reasonable value at that price, no matter what the frills. A similar experience can be had for $150 or less at all but the most exclusive resort golf courses. (By way of example, this is about what I paid the week before at Bahia Beach in Puerto Rico. No "free" mini-Gatorades, but better service, better course conditions, better practice facilities, a more interesting layout, etc.)

But all of this is burying the lede: I would not consider going back to Cowboys (even at $70 a round) until something is done about the greens, which are simply unplayable on about half of the holes. It's not a matter of green speed (though that certainly doesn't help); I suspect they were rolling at something like a 9.5 or 10, which isn't outrageous. But the contours of many of the greens make it impossible to stop even a short putt anywhere close to the hole. At first I thought it might be a matter of challenging pin positions, and this probably contributed. But as the round progressed, I looked around the greens to see whether there were flatter spots to cut the holes and didn't see many better options.

Two of our threesome last Sunday were decent players (6 and 11 handicaps), and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I saw six balls putted off of green surfaces—and four of them were on first putts of shorter than 15 feet! An eight-foot look at birdie on several holes meant a passive brush at the ball in order to ensure that the come-backer for par would be shorter than the first putt. On the par-3 17th, a 12-foot birdie putt from above the hole ended up as a double-bogey when it rolled off the front apron of the green and left me with a 50-footer through 15 feet of fairway. I rolled that par putt up to hole high, three feet left of the hole... but as I walked up to mark it, the ball rolled back to my feet. I hit the bogey putt past the hole and watched it roll back down to 15 feet below the hole. I hammered that one in the back of the cup for double, which is a good thing, because I might've walked off the course if that one came back to me again. (My playing partner had an eight-foot birdie putt, also from above the hole, and made his 12-foot come-backer for par after barely making contact with the first putt.)

I know, I know: this all sounds like bad beat stories and whining about an ugly scorecard, right? But that's not really the point. I enjoyed the course and enjoyed the day, but this one aspect of the golf course is going to ruin a lot of people's round. If it wasn't evident after all three players in our group four-putted from inside 40 feet on the ~130 yard par-3 3rd, it was made so on 18: the 25-handicap in our group was unable to finish after hitting three consecutive below-the-hole putts past the cup, then watching them loop past the hole and return to his feet.

Tee to green, the course was really enjoyable. And maybe we just caught the course setup on a bad day. It was a Sunday; who knows, maybe the U.S. Open was being played at Cowboys later that day. Maybe the greens usually roll a little slower, maybe they were slick because of the cold (??), maybe... who knows. But I wouldn't go back until the greens are ripped up and changed. Challenging is one thing—stupid is another. These greens are stupid.

Pace of play was good for us, as the course was lightly populated thanks to the time of year. (Mid-30s when we teed off, high-40s by the time we finished around noon.) But I could see the pace being truly awful during the summer months, when the course is packed with foursomes who are four-putting many of the greens.

In summary: good track, but no more than comparable with the higher-end daily-fee competition in the area (many of which will cost you 25% of the price). Good service, but not remarkably so. And finally, deal-breakingly stupid greens.

High Quality

You might think you'd need to be a Dallaa Cowboy fan to enjoy. It doesn't hurt, but is doesn't matter. Look at AT&T stadium (where the Cowboys play) and you can see it's an awesome venue....well so too is this course. Fun, challenging, beautiful. Great place to impress a client. Very nice experience. Don't miss it.

Great for amatures

This is a great course to play. I played in mid December and the course was still in immaculate condition. bunkers were phenomenal and true. Greens were very tough to score on and difficult for someone who hasn't played this course before. Overall I would give it a 9/10 only because I stuggled on the greens but in fairness you couldn't ask for much more out of a course. Great facilities

Very Nice Course but way overpriced...

Played here on a trip to see a Cowboys game last season, I had brought my clubs but the price-tag was going to keep me away, ended up getting the 1 "Hot Deal" on GolfNow, so played it for less than $100. But the RackRate, I believe is $175+

Its a very nice course, challenging, conditions and greens are top notch. I have played a lot of courses around the country and I would put the course probably in my top 25 for sure, but from a value standpoint, I just cant give it my recommendation. With the food, etc a reasonable price is probably like $135 prime weekend time slot, but discounted for later times, weekdays, etc to probably a $90 course?

Thxs GolfNow Rewards!

Had great experience; worth it for business intro or avid golfer. The All Inclusive price model has its place here for occassions. I brought client & it was successful; i do not think other courses locally would have went so well. Staff all were excellent. Play 3.5 hrs! Great meals. Grnd crew opportunity on greens in hole placement away from past cups & wear spots; need more thought as perspective golfer.)

was expecting more!

Was good to get this golf course off my "bucket list" but don't think I will play it again unless I find an amazing deal. I have played better course's for a lot less money. After adding all the snacks waters breakfast and lunch together I still think its over priced. Being a huge Cowboys fan the atmosphere is AWESOME! It however was in pretty good shape and the pace of play was good.

The Day Before The Cowboys Beat The Saints!!!

I normally don't write reviews about golf courses. The reason I am writing this one is simply due to the price and what you get for it. First off, the course is a GREAT course! However, the money they ask for it, is INSANE, for the "little" things that a course MUST make sure are in place. 1. Range Balls = Almost Bald and DIRTY! 2. My Cart = "Michael Irving" broken cart strap drivers side, luckily I was not riding with anyone. 3. Club Cleaner/Ball Cleaner = Needed Water, I used a "free" bottle of water to fill it up. 4. Overall Cleanliness of Cart = Seen better at municipal tracks! 5. Greens = GREAT! 6. Fairways = Incredible! 7. Bunkers = Real Sand! 8. Food = Awesome! 9. Staff = Great! 10. Outside Staff = 1 "Overworked" kid Ok, enough, you get the point. For the money, they have to tighten up on the "little" things that can make this course an INCREDIBLE experience. Most of their play is "out of towners" that are Cowboy fans or business folks. WE/THEY can do better than this for all to have a memorable experience! I hope to see changes on my next visit....

Great staff

Overall it was a very nice experience. Course was in very good shape. Greens are coming back nicely. The staff is one of the best I have encountered. I was wondering how they would treat me being a golfnow customer, some courses don't seem to like the golfnow customers. This wasn't the case. The staff was great. Added bonus of food and drinks being included. The only thing I would say is that if u pay full price or even close to it, it's not worth it. If u get a good golfnow deal then jump on it. I wouldn't pay over $75 for the course.

Cowboys Review

This is an excellent course and the VIP Package is well worth the money. The greens are in need of some work. The most recent aeration has not fully healed on many of the holes. The remainder of the course is in superb condition. I played on a holiday afternoon and was disappointed that the course was not set up for proper pace of play. The tee boxes were not set for the high wind speed and direction and most of the pin placements were on hillsides which leads to many 3 putts. I mention this only because they prescribe to the "Ready Golf" philosophy, yet they didn't set the course to match their own guidelines. I still recommend going and I will go back.
