Solid fair test
For a Pete Dye course this is a very fair test. Everything is straightforward. Pace of play was abysmal considering an afternoon round during the week (over 4 1/2 hours). Greens were the best part of the course. Lightning fast and true.
Great elevation changes
Didn't expect to find this many holes with so much elevation differences. The course was in great shape too.
What a Golf Course
Southern Hills is one of the best tracks I've played. This was our third time playing it and it is always challenging and in excellent shape. Playing during the week was a treat as we had a great pace of play and no one pushing us. The greens are true, the course is tough but fair and the staff were all very friendly. I'll be back here to play again next year.
Still a great course
We play this course every year on our annual golf vacation in January. It is one of our favorites in the area. The course was is great shape. Greens putted very nice. If you haven't played here, you should try it. It is challenging but fair. Big fairways, but some tough greens to hit. Not many holes next to each other, so it seems like you're out there by yourself.
Southern Hills is a must play...
Pete Dye championship track. The "tour" tees go back to 7600, but the tips play at 6950 and are more than enough to handle. Perfect conditions, perfect firmness and tremendous setup overall. A ton of elevation changes for Florida, and definitely a course worth driving over an hour to play. My only minor criticism is Pete Dye's constant need to over-contour greens. There's plenty of that and you'll get some unfair breaks, but the course is so nice that you won't really care.
Great Course, just one thing
I have been wanting to play this course for almost two years and was not disappointed with any aspect of the golf. My only constructive criticism would be is we were told there would be beverage service on the course. We did see the beverage cart on the 6th hole. Spent $60 on food and beverage. Asked if there would still be service while we played the back 9. We were assured yes. We never saw the beverage cart again. Not a big deal or a deal breaker, as the course was GREAT. Just gotta stuff the bags with food and beverage next time. Easily would have spent another $100 if we had the opportunity.
GREAT LAYOUT
1ST time playing. Was in great condition. Thought the fairways would be tougher than they were. Greens were hard as a rock, you have to have a high flight ball to stop the on greens. Some greens were more grainy than others. They were rolling very true. Bunkers were just right, not too soft, not too hard. Didn't play my best game but, was a very nice course. Will play again. ..........
Stunning
I played here as a single on Thanksgving and next to Steamsong courses it was the most enjoyable round I have had in Florida for years.
Beautiful condition, excellent layout and minimal intrusion from houses.
A Must Play!
I am responsible for booking a golf trip for myself and seven friends each year. I spoke with some people and Southern Hills was highly recommended. Last year, I passed on this course. I'm glad I didn't pass on Southern Hills this year. Southern Hills is now on our yearly "must play" list.
From the moment you pull in, you know you're at somewhere special. When you pull in, the guard gives you a printed sheet that tells you that shirts must be tucked in and caps must face forward. When in the dining room, gentlemen are expected to take their hats off. When you pull up to the bag drop, the staff is welcoming and cordial.
The staff in the golf shop was very nice as well. We were told where the range was and that range balls are included in our greens fee. The range was very nice and had plenty of target to hit to.
The putting green was good sized (there are two) and was quick. Chipping is allowed and highly recommended.
We teed off on time. The first tee was as nice as some greens that I have played at other courses. The course was in phenomenal shape. The tees were perfect. The fairways were tight and full. The traps were freshly raked and had a layer of sand over a solid base. Perfect for spinning the ball out of bunkers. The greens were some of the best I've ever played on. Fast and true! The greens surfaces had been replaced earlier this year. You'd never know it by looking at the greens.
The course offers a variety of lengths of holes. There are some shorter holes and some longer holes. The par threes are playable. There are uphill and downhill holes. The greens have some nice undulations in them. Hit the ball above the hole, good luck stopping your putt.
The holes are interesting. I'd recommend getting a yardage book. I didn't have one and had to rely on a course map I found on my phone. The yardage book would have been a welcome aid.
I've never been a Dye fan. This course is not a normal Dye design. This course is special! I can absolutely say that Southern Hills is a must play and will be a course we play yearly.
Just know that the course is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Public players can only tee it up after 11:00. Southern Hills is worth the wait!
Ooooh My Goodness!
Like Bulle Rock in Md...This course is awesome! I'm an decent player and this course is eye candy! The reviews stated the greens were suspect. Well they are putting new ones in and were killing the old ones! Like they do...I have no clue!! All I know this is a tour caliber course is great shape and, yes the greens were brown; yet they were fast and putted true!!
If they were not closing the course I would play it every week!
First timer.....Hooked
Awesome. I checked first and Dillon told me of some brown on greens in prep for green maintenance. Was assured roll was still good, and it was. Great course..can't wait to take it on again.
Good designed course
Had to play before the redo greens this summer, it was in good shape, some of the greens had a few rough spots not many. some holes are tough on the approach to the green.
Rec w/reservations, beware of Greens
I would recommend the course with reservations until June 1. The greens are rather rough, and will probably only get worse until the course closes June 1 for greens renovations. The fairways are in great condition. I thought the warm-up putting green was small.
The views are phenomenal, real hills offer great variation to other fake hill Florida courses. Given the condition of the fairways, I would likely vote this course over WorldWoods, but will have to wait until the Fall to experience the new greens.
One of the best courses in this part of Florida
I really enjoyed my round at Southern Hills Plantation. It is a lovely course in very good condition. I found the greens were a little tricky to read. The fairways were in great shape. It is a challenging course but great fun to play, highly recommended.
The members seem to be in their own world, the only course we have played where no one spoke to us or wanted to engage in any way, apart from the staff. That said it is still well worth a visit.
First Time
Staff was great and friendly. pace of play was good and course was in good shape. Enjoyable afternoon but the greens are a bit tough to read so bring your best putter
THE greens
Starting at the first hole, the position of the pin in a area was unfair to my putter, it made it luck to make the putt, therefore I believe the pin placement should of been in areas with grass not prearranged pin placement. Think of the guests on a vacation that expected nice green conditions or give your guests a heads up that the greens are in transition. Maybe the staff was unfair not the greens. Sorry
One of the Best
Loved the course, worth the price of admission, Pete Dye can and does punish a wayward shot but overall lost of fun to play.
what treat
If you are ever in Brooksville, Fl give yourself a treat, try this course, PGA quality yet ot overpowering for the average player
