Give the Dunes a BIG Break
Having lived in Hernando County for the past four years I have played the Dunes Golf Club before and after it's closing. I would like to point out that the Club closed in the spring of 20013 and laid dormant until it re-opened later that fall. I have read the negative reviews regarding the spotty fairways and washed out bunkers However I would like to point out that this golf course layout and beauty can not be found elsewhere in the Nature Coast. The staff and grounds crew have been diligent in bringing the course back into form.
For the above average Hacker like myself the green fees, amenities, pace of play and hospitable employees at the Dunes can not be matched. Unless you believe that you're ready for the PGA tour and should be playing venues like DORAL or RIVERA may I suggest you all give the DUNES golf club a BIG BREAK!!
Needs grass
I was in the area and decided to play this course based on photos I had seen. Bad idea. The fairways are terrible. I had to move my ball just to find a patch of grass to hit my ball from. Looking out over the course you can see potential because the layout looks nice. I will never play here again and I suggest others do not waste their time.
Dunes still needs work
We've played this course many times and really enjoy the layout. But there were many bare spots in the fairways. However, the greens were in great shape. The two of us played in 3 hr 15 minutes - we only saw one other group the entire round.
Hopefully, the course will improve. At the GolfNow price, it was still a good deal.
Challenging Play...
Course fairways are in average condition -- a lot of bare spots; greens are in great shape. Pace of play was an issue on this day -- the course was backed up with two-somes and three-somes....it took my husband and myself over 4 hours to play 18 holes.
Course has ton of potential
The greens were sweet. Hole 17 has one of the most challenging greens Ive ever played. Fairways need some work and tee boxes were fine. Layout was super cool. Definitely has a ton of potential. Waste bunker on almost every hole makes it challenging. Not a lot of food options but I'm here for the links so I don't really care. Would definitely play again. Once the fairways are silky this place is going to be incredible.
hidden gem on its way back
Outstanding layout ready to burst back to one of the best. Only 9 months out of bankruptcy, the design of the course will be up there with its neighbor, World Woods. Greens receive shots well and are challenging with the slope and steep bunkers along their edge. Ample landing area for drives and a test on the 2nd shot to many uphill, well-bunkered green.
A great value with the fairways needing more grass and overseeding.
very different for a florida course in tampa
greens could be cut down and would make for some tricky putting
nice course. great price
This place has lots of sand and very little water. Course is clean. Greens are very interesting in shape and topography. Nice long course.
Good Value
Greens & tee boxes were great. Fairways were dry & hard in some spots but welcome to Florida during the winter months. Excellent carts.
Can't understand why it's not busier.
A most enjoyable round on this classic golf course
A most enjoyable round on this classic golf course.
I think it is one of the finest courses in Central Florida.
I enjoyed a very nice reception and thoroughly enjoyed my round.
Potential
Was a great layout, nice shape to couse, some bad spots in fairways but overall nice course
unforgettable course
we visit florida each year in december and to play the dunes is a must do.
we like the wildlife with birds, alligators and iguanas
and the chlallenging course with water all around.
even though our booking time didn´t exist, the manager succeeded in sliding us in
nice plac3
Nice place. Good conditions on the course except for a couple greens. Friendly staff let me go of the back nine first.
Needs Work
Several years back, this was one of the top courses on Florida's Nature Coast. It was closed for a while and reopened. It needs a lot of work. The fairways are very hard and the grass does not grow. The greens are fine, but, were not cut or rolled the day I played.
I hope they get the course back to where it was several years back. I think it will be a great course to play.
Nice course gone to pot
This is a really nice piece of property and an excellent layout. Unfortunately it is in pretty sad shape. Weeds everywhere. When I played there were only a few cars in the lot. Chicken and egg problem - people won't play unless it's in better shape. But I guess they can't afford to get in in shape unless more people play.
Great Layout
The course is a real challenge even from the white tees--we played the next tee back and the course whipped us. The course is not in god shape. The fairways have lots of areas where the grass has not filled in leaving some very poor lies. The greens are hard and very fast resulting in "table-top" putting conditions. Worth $20 but not more untill conditions improve.
Fun course to play
Course is a very fun layout . Fairways were firm and need a little more grass but it reminds me of links courses conditions. Greens rolled pretty well. This is not your plush country club course but a great layout and fun to play .
scenic course
I have played this course previously about two years ago but the condition deteriorated so I was pleased too see that it was now improving. THe course has a good mix of holes and would suit those who like wide fairways but the fairways are lined with waste areas so you are penalised. Would recommend playing and do not think you will be disappointed,
Eh
How to explain the dunes. Has the potential to be one of the best courses in Florida and from past reviews, it sounded like it was used to be there. The bad: The fairways were in overall eh condition. Some good, most were less then average. Greens were really spotty. Extremely fast but a lot of sand/brown/dead spots. Crab grass on the greens and on the edges. Tee boxes were in average condition. The good: great layout and a truly a unique course. All four par-3's had great views and were extremely challenging. You will get to a tee box and say wow to yourself when you see the view. If they put in the $$$ to clean up the fairways and greens then you have one of the best courses in central Florida. The condition they have it in now, it's a shame.
ONCE GREAT COURSE GOES TO POT
I played this course several years ago right after it was remodeled and it was great! I was surprised to see it offered for 10 bucks on golf now, but it was a last minute tee time and it appeared they were going to hook me up with someone as the time was good for only one or two players. I got there early enough to hit a few balls off the dirt at the driving range, then played three holes by myself before I turned around and left. the fairways were poor and the greens had what appeared to be st Augustine grass growing on them. If I had paid 25 I would have demanded my money back!
