Challenging Course
I'm a senior golfer and shot 89. The par fours are somewhat longer than usual for seniors. However, I like the course and enjoy the extra challenge it offers.
Love especially the far five 17th with its unusual layout. This is the only course I've ever played ibn the last 50 years that ends wth two par fives. .
Needs a lot of work, but has potential
At one time this was one of the nicest courses in the area. I've played it many times. Especially back on the junior tour (15-18 years ago) However, a few years back it closed its doors for a few years, and it was NOT maintained well at all during that time (which is understandable). It's been back open a while now, and I'm sure they are trying to get it back into shape, but they have a ways to go. Waste areas and bunkers were poorly maintained, fairways are filled with weeds, tee boxes were pretty rough with very little grass and lots of weeds. The greens were actually in better shape than anything else, but still needed work...very slow. If they can manage to stay open another year or two, and keep pouring money into this course they may get back to where they once were. If they keep just maintain it in the current way they'll be out of business again in no time. I wish them well...I really do. The course has such great potential. I don't want to see anyone fail, but with the # of courses in the Hernando area (many in tip top shape) they have a lot of competition. I'd say the biggest eye sore is the waste areas. They need to clean them up big time, and get nice edges on them (fix the wash outs). If they could get them to look 75% like World Woods Pine Barrens waste areas do they'll be great. That and kill some weeds on the fairways (they have to be dug up), and they may just turn this place around!!! GOOD LUCK:)
Diamond in the Rough
A wonderful layout that reminds one of a Pinehurst area course. Many natural areas to keep you on your toes. Excellent variety of holes. This is no back and forth vanilla track. The course is being resurrected from a year of being shutdown. Progress is being made but there is still plenty of work left to do. At this point it is a no frills experience. But in speaking with the GM, he and his staff are determined to bring it back to it's once pristine condition. The greens are coming back nicely with only 1 & 10 having some bald areas at this point. The fairways are generous but still challenging. One must be cognizant of hazards: there are plenty of them. We played in 3 hours and 20 minutes. We will return to enjoy this course again to appreciate the progress made by the staff. Worth the drive and there are some excellent deals right now
Challenging layout
The layout of the course is challenging but that's what makes this course fun to play
Good pace of play and value for the money
I play here often and frequently by myself because I like the layout, pace of play and value. Like others have said, it needs work after being closed for such a long time and every time that I come here I do see people out there working. Greens are OK and challenging, most tee boxes OK, some fairways OK but others have many weeds and thin on grass. Not that big a deal to me, I simply move the ball a few inches to a decent lie if I'm in the fairway. Course has many elevation changes, bunkers and long sand hazards along the fairways which make it a very challenging layout. I would recommend playing the appropriate tees for your ability on this course!
Conditions of course
Fairways were in rough shape. The greens were pretty nice. A lot of deep bunkers and long Sandtraps.
A little a rough
This course needs the summer rains, but for the price you will not find a better course. The layout of this course in my opinion makes it one of the best in central fl.
Fun layout
Your pretty much here for the elevation and fun shots def not for the greens. Its worth going out there and feeling like your in north carolina. Greens were slow but the course is def playable. I actually played 36 by myself cruised and hit a lot of extra shots. Make the trip its worth it and its fun
no dunes alot of water
This is a great and challenging golf course. Drives need to be fairly precise in order to stay out of trouble. Overall its fair if you can hit the ball straight. a couple of forced carries can eat golf balls.
Long Under Appreciated Course
I'm very surprised with the negative reviews of this course. My experience was quite the opposite. Played June 2014 in the afternoon, this place was empty. A twosome in front of our three some was quickly gone and not a person was seen for the remainder of the day.
The course reminded me quite a bit of World Woods Pine Barrens course with much more personality and use of elevation. Even the greens were much more interesting. You would be correct with assuming that the fairways were not perfect, nor every green free of blemishes, but the price point is correct for this level of maintenance and length of play. However, this does not diminish the enjoyment of this course for the average player.
Waste bunkers are huge on this course, and as well kept. Each played with different types of sand, some hard, some sugar and created a fun challenge. Deep on fairway bunkers will need excellent iron work to progress. Pay attention to playing the correct tee placement for your skill level on this course as it will do much to maintain the pace of play.
I will play this course again, and if possible often. It's worth the drive. Some other features you may enjoy: Carts were new and very nice. Course amenities were well placed with two comfort stations that were well maintained. Staff was friendly and quick.
Nice track below average condition
Nice layout condition is below average for a fl coarse. If you get a good deal it is worth playing because there is never more than 15-20 cars in the parking lot.
Dunes
Glad to see this coarse back open. The coarse just needs a little more work to get it back were it was but still fun and nice coarse to play
Dont listen to the poor reviews of the Dunes
I have been playing this course for several years before and after it closing last summer. This layout is one of the best for golf courses in the nature coast. What I enjoy the most is the hospitality of the owner Ed and his wife and daughter Sarah. While playing the Dunes you can see wild turkeys, foxes, deer and wild birds.
What you wont see is houses, power lines, highways, casual water and rude marshals.
The course is coming along just fine. The greens are coming back to form. I enjoy playing golf for the fun of it and the friendship of the guys I play with. Being a fair golfer I don't need a Pinehurst No. #2.
Having played all the other courses in Hernando County recently they are in no better shape than the Dunes. Give the Dunes a shot you wont be disappointed.
Very Poor Conditions - Do Not Waste Your Time
Crabgrass on every fairway - Every green has fungus and bald spots. Shameful that such a beautiful track has come to this. On Sunday, there were 12 cars in the lot at 11am. Maybe someone can buy tis course and invest a lot of money and put it back the way it used to be. One can hope...
Very pleased
Very impressed with layout. Great design, will remind you of World Woods-Pine Barrens, Streamsong, or El Diablo. Conditions are improving but still better than most courses. If you enjoy a great layout this is a must for central Florida.
Not worth the price
Course is secluded and fair design however fairways in fair condition at best. Greens were shortly ,burnt up and not well maintained . Interesting lay out , a lot of sand . Name describes course well.
Corse needs work
I played the dunes some years back it has a great layout. When I played it on 6/01/14. It was in very poor shape need a lot of work the price is to much for the shape it is in it was air rated as well and that didn't help any
X-Out
Amazing views and layout as long as you're not golfing. No difference between fairway and rough. Mostly patches of grass. Even less on greens and tee boxes. Limited service in clubhouse. What once was a FABULOUS track is no better than backyard accommodations.
Save your money!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have played the Dunes 15-20 times. The course closed for a period of time and reopened in September of 2014. I understand that it takes time to get a course back in shape, however, this track is really BAD!!!!! It is just in horrible condition, with wavy fairways, greens which were dry and just in bad shape. We saw no one working on the course during our entire round, and trust me there is plenty of work. I'll go back if they get this place back in shape.
What happened to this place????
Not only was I shocked at the conditions of the fairways and greens, but the fact GolfNow nor even at the Pro Shop told me the greens were aerated. I played this course in December, and I enjoyed the conditions of the greens and fairways. On Tuesday, May 27th, there were mud patches and missing parts on the greens along with the aeration. Weeds and overgrowing grass was EVERYWHERE in the fairways. The bumpiness while driving the golf cart through out the course even in the fairway was bone chattering and full of kidney beatings. I will probably NEVER play this course again. I needs a tremendous amount of work. So, with their "under new management" sign looking rather "old", I would go see the course before booking a Tee Time. What a shame, because the layout and distance suits my game very well...
