Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
Great Value
I play this course a few times a year when I am in Virginia Beach. It is a beautiful setting in and amongst the woodlands and wildlife refuge. The course was in the best shape I have seen it recently. The fairways were lush and even though the greens had recently been aerated, they rolled pretty true. A great experience and I look forward to my next round.

Overall a good experience. Nice conditions. Fairways kind of tight, greens are on the small side. Well kept. Friendly. Only real complaint was they let a foursome off the back during the middle of our round and slowed the pace of play a bit. Would recommend the course.
Go someplace else
They made me mad from the start. They don’t allow carts to go to the range or to your vehicle. The boys at cart barn were unfriendly. This course acts like it’s nice but tee boxes sucked. They have bees on many greens. They have a tip jar by cart barn and those kids do nothing. I told cashier about golf now having the wrong directions. He didn’t seem to care. Go somewhere else. Kempsville is better. I’m from illinois and was disappointed in this course
Don’t waste your time, money, or sanity playing this course
I am a local playing on a budget and I’ve played here for years but Mike, the owner, is absolutely incapable of running a golf course. His nonsensical rules change on a weekly basis. He is of the volition that he can charge more and implement asinine rules simply because he finally repaired some of the cart path that he should have repaired years ago. Dealing with him alone will give you a migraine. Meanwhile, the course itself is still in considerably rough shape. The tee boxes are essentially slabs of un-level sand and mud. The course is poorly maintained and I’ve never seen them so much as water the greens and fairways. When they charged $20 and Mike was simply milking the course from a far, it was worth tolerating. Sadly, those days are gone and he clearly doesn’t read reviews but you are a fool if you play this course without reading them.
A fine place for an easy round
This course has some cool elements and could be a nice course with some TLC. For the money, it’s not bad. Drainage is their biggest issue. Greens are super soft and there is standing water all over after a rain. There are some fun holes, but most are pretty basic. Bunkers are in better shape than I expected. Greens could be difficult if they could speed them up and firm them up. I’d play it again on vacation, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to play there.
Poor conditions and extremely poor service
I played on 6/28. When I arrived at the course and asked for range balls they let me know the range was closed. When driving to the first hole the ranger let me know the back 9 was closed and it was cart path only. They were backed up because everyone had to play the front 9 twice. To top that off my cart died on the first hole. When I called the clubhouse ... No apology just we will bring one out to you.
Here is the best part ... I paid $60 on line. The 3 other people I was playing with paid $35 because of the conditions. When I went to the clubhouse to explain the situation and ask for the same deal they gave me the run around and would not provide a solution. Mike the manager is incapable of rational, logical and customer centric driven service.
The bottom line is the course is in poor condition, The service is ridiculous and if you don't like getting ripped off then stay away from the appropriately named Hells Point.
Greens were in good shape, most tee boxes were in awful shape..
Poor
First off we couldn’t take the cart to are car or even the driving range. Tee boxes and fairways were in rough shape. Some tee boxes you couldn’t even tee off from. Fairways were pretty bald throughout the course had to move my ball of dirt sometimes. Pretty sad to see them charging $65 for 18 holes on a pretty sad course.
Do Not Waste Your Time
Don’t waste your time at this course. The prices are high for what you get on this course. I have been played here for the past 8 years and have never seen the course in in good enough shape to justify the money spent, but that’s my fault for continuing to come back. The nonsensical rules have changed constantly, it seems overnight at times This summer is the first I have written it off and will not be back. Make tee time at your own risk.
Current owners doing everything they can to ruin this course
The current owners seemingly make this place worse and worse every time I come. You cannot play by yourself in-season (member or not), they will also force you to pay for 18 even if you just want to play 9 (regardless if it’s empty on the course). You are required to carry your bags from the parking lot as they no longer give you a cart until your actual tee time for some weird reason. In-season prices are ridiculously overpriced just for terrible tee boxes, lack of water at water stations, muddy fairways, etc.
Oh and don’t even dare play here in the off-season because the owner’s wife will follow you around the course and repeatedly tell you that the carts have to be back an hour before sundown. Slowing you down in the process.
Look elsewhere and only play here as an absolute last result. Most employees are nice but are forced to do these stupid things because of the current owners.
