Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Not bad at all
Some people have been leaving somewhat wild reviews, I don’t play here often but did not have the same experience as others. I played after heavy rain and course was wet but in good condition anyways, other than tee boxes which there are a good few in very bad shape. Pace of play was great, I enjoyed the layout a lot with a great variety of shots to hit. I did not have any interactions with management other than checking in and saying hello so I can’t speak to the “wild rules” others have said. Consider my rating a 3.5, would’ve given a 4 but price a a bit high for the area.
Rough course
This course has a lot of potential but it is in very rough condition. A lot of the tee boxes were mostly sand and a lot of water all over the course.
Great layout
Love this Rees Jones design. Greens were shaggy, and bunkers need a lot of work.
nice day
beautiful December weather, 70 degrees +. Course was very wet from recent rains.
Love the course but…..
This is a.wonderful course that is in need of some work. The cart paths are old and in serious need of replacement. Sadly, many of the players are hard on the course, taking divots without repairing them. About half the tee boxes are rough. The greens are for the most part okay but players don’t fix their ball marks. The majority of the bunkers should be considered hazards as they are hard packed sand with weeds growing in them. All that said, it’s still fun to play. I’d love to see it be brought back to the condition it was in back in the 90’s.
Beautiful Layout and Surrounding Scenery
The course has a nice layout. Fall colors and sprawling lakes added to the beauty of the course. It was not crowded. The pace of play was real good thanks to the absence of noticeably slow players. Strongly recommended.
One of my favorites in Tidewater
Good challenging course. A couple of the greens (one in particular) weren't in great shape, but overall, they were good. I just wish more golfers would be aware enough to fix their ball marks on them.
The worst part of the course is the bunkers. While there are some that are very high lipped (which I don't mind), the sand has been compacted and using a sand wedge is almost impossible. Some of the tee boxes looked highly used, but just a few.
Worth a look
Staff was great. Layout is nice. It’s a bit tight on several holes. Fairways for the most part were nice. Bunkers and tee boxes definitely need some care. Most of the greens were in decent shape. There are some really nice views along the course.
