Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Fairways and tee boxes are atrocious
Very disappointing experience. Slow play to be expected, but no rangers trying to keep players on pace. But the overall condition of course was not worth the price. Tee boxes are nothing but can grass and other weeds. No true teeing area. The fairways were bare, overridden with weeds and had just been aerated. Not ideal.. it's too bad because earlier this year, the course was in Gohan shape, but no longer.
Over priced goat ranch
I heard this course went down hill so I never decided to play until I was told it had gotten better. That was not the case. Over priced for what the course offered. Terrible tee boxes, awful fairways and average greens.
Watch out for thieves that work there
I played there for a tournament for South Carolina State University alumni. The pace of play was awful, and on the cart path only holes, the Marshall would sit at the end of the cart path to where you had to drive off to let him buy, and then he would yell at you because you weren’t on the path, even though he was also not on the path. At the end of the round I left a rangefinder on the golf cart for 10 minutes and before turning around to try to get it back and was told it wasn’t there and no one had seen it. there should be a reasonable expectation that the workers there are honest enough to give paying customers their things back when asked. The management should really look at who they employ because if your workers are willing to steal from your customers, they are definitely stealing from you. I do not recommend this course to anyone.
Awful pace of play, range closed, tee boxes in bad condition
Pace of play was awful due to a tournament that ran behind and Sunday league both on the same day. Then they decided to close the range while making us wait 35 min to tee off. No marshal around so the foursome in front of us turned into a six-some. Management definitively needs to do a better job of scheduling. For the price that we payed I could have went to a cheaper course and had a better experience.
Old hickory
Pace of play was extremely slow. Took over 5 hours to play 18 holes. Greens were very slow. Tee boxes were only ok. Need some work. Course layout was fun. If the greens would’ve been cut and pace of play was better it would’ve been a lot more enjoyable. Overall 2.5/5.
Great course but pace management
I’m about 5 holes in and the course is beautiful with a great layout. As for pace, it is horrific. I’m playing a morning round that is on pace to be 6plus hours long since the groups in front of me are playing an inefficient scramble. I think they should book scramble tournaments closer to 2pm when pace is a little bit more lax. Without staff enforcement of pace, this course is not worth the price tag. However, staff are friendly and helpful.
Good public course great staff.
There's a lot to say here. First of all, the staff couldn't have been nicer. Everyone was very friendly and engaged well with the players. We went to the practice facility and that was pretty disappointing. You're hitting off old mats with beat up balls and if you want to hit driver you have to hit into a net. Still it allowed me to warm up but I wouldn't want to work on swing changes there. It was $5 for a bag of balls. The starter was extremely nice and very personable. We got started on time and the course was in pretty good shape. The sand traps were nothing to write home about but I was only in one all day. I was able to hit a pretty normal shot out of it, but my playing partners were having fits getting out of the sand traps. From what I could see, there was not a lot of sand in most traps. Greens were in good shape and rolled probably 10 or so on the stamp meter. So reasonably fast but not intimidating. The fairways were in okay shape. The tee boxes weren't in particularly good shape, but hey you're teeing it up anyway. The carts do not have a GPS system so you have to bring your own or a laser. The pace of play was actually pretty good. It wasn't fast, but it wasn't particularly slow to the point where you're going. Crazy waiting. Four and a half hour round. The old hickory grill room served very good food after the round and they have a nice place to sit covered outside. Incidentally, they have water igloos on the course as well as a cart girl with beverages and snacks. She was extremely friendly and we saw her about four times. There was another young lady who met us at the 18th Green and begin cleaning the clubs. She was also very sweet and very engaging. Overall a nice day on a decent course with excellent staff.
Just add some sand
Would be really nice to put sand in the sand traps out of the four traps I was in for the day only 1 had sand the other la were mud or hardpacked dirt.
Best kept greens in the region
Greens have a lot of movement and breaks, but the roll was true. Very well kept Kudos to the course super and grounds crew..
Always a pleasure
What can I say. The day was beautiful and the course played really well. The front nine could use some sand in the traps, but really happy with the course. The pace is okay sped up on the back nine after we got to play through the foursome in front of us.
