A good flat windy course.

This is a nice course the flags have so much character, but it's not as challenging as I thought it would be, but for the money it's a nice test for your iron play, the gust of wind make club selection for approach shot somewhat difficult. Greens are fast but readable. Solid layout, with few hazards.

Poor Communication & Handling of Aeration Schedule

Everyone understands golf courses must aerate their greens twice a year. However, what you will see outlined below - this is about as bad as a golf course could have handled this situation.

When I called last week to make my tee time, the pro shop made no mention the greens would be aerated. Understand, this course is notorious for sending out emails when the course is closed due to weather. No email sent that the greens would be aerated starting the week of 3/11/24.

When I arrived at the course, there was a note on the counter that said aeration started 3/11/24. Nothing further said by the person in the pro shop – just the sign. Most golf courses take two days to complete the aeration process. Some courses keep 9 holes open while they aerate each 9 holes. My thought was the greens were just aerated and I should be getting a discounted green fee.

The price was $40, which is what you would expect for an off-season rate at this course. I would have expected a rate of $30 if the course had just been aerated.

We started our round and to our dismay, they were still aerating some of the holes while we were playing. There were FOUR temporary greens/flagsticks in the front of the greens on holes 4, 5, 6 & 9. No communication from the pro shop, cart attendant or starter that there would be temporary holes. Yes, FOUR temporary holes they ALL forgot to mention. I went on their website this morning, there is no mention of an aerating schedule, temporary holes, etc.

In summary, this was a complete money grab by the Landings at Spirit Golf Course. The poorest display of communications I’ve seen from a golf course. The Landings at Spirit Golf Course should be ashamed and embarrassed. If this is how they want to treat their customers, take your golfing rounds elsewhere.

Not In Favor of Full Green Fees With Aerated Greens

The Landings at Spirit is a fun golf course to play and is located in a great location. I think the normal $72 green fees is too high, considering the overall conditioning of the fairways and rough. Many bad areas and no consistent zoysia throughout the fairways.

Then to charge the same price with aerated greens, makes no sense. it was an unusual aeration pattern too. Greens on 3,4,7,8,15,16,17 & 18 were aerated. The greens not aerated were good. They have consistently had excellent greens.

Place of play was better with an actual marshal doing something about it. The 1st tee box was not mowed and the rough was higher than normal. Also, the worst cart paths you may experience on a golf course.

Many Issues Preventing This Course From Being A Good Course

The front side at the Landings at Spirit is a flat nine, which gives you a feel of British golf courses with 4 holes sharing greens. Holes 2 through 4 look very similar. The back nine is flat too but the greens are more severe, with many 3-tiered greens. The course is right next to the Spirit of St. Louis airport. Many planes taking off and landing.

It is in a great location in St. Louis County, near the Chesterfield Valley. It is a fun course and I enjoy playing the course. The best thing about this course is the greens. Always in good shape.

Here are the reasons why this course only gets 3 stars from me.

The fairways have a lot of rough areas. Some of the rough, especially on holes 2 thru 4 is not the best.

The weekend price of $72 is too high for the design and condition of the fairways/rough. You can play the Golf Club of Wentzville, which is in outstanding shape, for $62. Spencer T. Olin is in the $55 range and Annbriar (one of the best in the area) for $75.

It has some of the worst cart paths.

The thing that bothered me the most today, was the ridiculous pin placement on hole 9. Placed 1 foot from the tier. We had several people 4 putt. After the round, another group was complaining too. Several 4-putts in that group also. There is no reason to do this. The Landings should be embarrassed for having such a nonsensical pin placement.

A Fun Track Which Still Needs To Improve

The Landings at Spirit is a fun course to play, which is located in a nice location in St. Louis County. The front side is more of a links type of course with several double greens. Holes 2-4 look very similiar and are a bit boring. The back side is flat also, but the tiers in the greens, give this side some bite.

They usually have some of the best greens in the area, however, they putted on the slow side today. I though the 1st green was the slowest of the day.

I thought where they needed to improve the course the most was the fairways. I thought the fairways looked better than they have all year. However, they still need to improve.

This course which has large greens and they like to put pins within one yard of a tier. There is no need for this. It is unfair and slows down the pace of play. Holes 8 & 11.

The price of $72 is a bit steep for the course you are getting. I can play Spencer T. Olin in the $50 range and the best course in the metro area, Annbriar, for $3 more at $75. There is no comparision in conditioning and design that the Landings can even get close to, when compared to Annbriar or Spencer T. Olin.

The Landings has some of the worst cart paths you will experience.

I still recommend the Landings. Fun, enjoyable course in a great location.

A Fun Course To Play But Has Some Bad Fairways

The Landings at Spirit is a fun course to play and in a great location in St. Louis County (Chesterfield, MO). The staff there is always nice and they have some of the best greens in the area. They have always been obsessed with having their greens in great shape. Looks like the 17th hole was recently aerated due to some concerns of the green but it looked fine.

However, their fairways really need some help. The par 5, 16th hole is in terrible shape. The fairways are so inconsistent with zoysia, weeds, other grasses and areas which need attention. This course also has some of the worse cart paths you will experience.

The front nine is more like a British/Scotland course. Flat with several double greens. Holes 2,3 & 4 look very similiar.

One thing I did not like about our round was all the pins placed near ridges. This is not necessary with plenty of flatter areas on the greens.

The place of play was great, Never had to wait. I think the weekend rate of $72 is too high considering the shape of the fairways.

I would still recommend the course because of its location, good greens and it is a fun course to play.

Fun Course With Excellent Greens

The Landings is a flat course that is fairly easy. Only the tiered greens and wind make the course more difficult.

The greens are always very good. The bunkers were raked and the rough was consistent and in good shape. The staff is always friendly too. They did have a course ranger which more courses need. No problems with pace of play.

The price of $72 for the weekend is in line for the course and their location in St. Louis County.

The major issues with this course are the fairways are not the best. Many spotty bare spots, weeds, etc. The cart paths need a lot of attention too.

This Course Has Some Good & Bad Attributes

The course has some good and bad attributes.

The good…

The greens are some of the best in the St. Louis area. However, I would have like them to been a bit faster. They have a female greenskeeper who is constantly checking the moisture of the greens throughout the day. She uses this stick that has some prongs on the end and the reading shows on her phone. They are obsessed with their greens.

The location is great. Located near the Chesterfield Valley in St. Louis County.

It is not overly difficult and very fun to play.

Several holes have these corn looking plants that can reach over 10 feet. Mostly on holes 3 & 4. When we played, these were non-existent. The course actually looked better without them. Not sure if they are trying to eliminate them or they will pop up when the weather gets warmer.

The bad...

The pace of play is really an issue. We waited at least 5 minutes on each shot. On hole 10, there were 4 groups on the hole. With no rangers on the course to find the bottlenecks, waiting on every shot is no fun.

They spend the majority of their time on the greens - which are terrific. However, the fairways really need some TLC. They are zoysia fairways, however, they are littered with patches of clover, bluegrass, weeds. The grass can be very thin also.

I feel the weekend price of $72 is a bit too high for what this course offers. When comparing to the best course in the area (Annbriar) who charges $75 on weekends. Annbriar has a better design, tees, fairways, rough and similar greens. The only thing Annbriar doesn’t have is the location.

Greens & Tees Were Not Mowed

The good thing about The Landings at Spirit was the off-season price of $37. They have now have started to follow other courses, not allowing carts off the path in the dormant/winter months.

One thing a course has to do is mow the greens everyday. The greens at the Landings were so hairy, it ruined the entire day. You had to hit your ball so hard, even on a downhill putt. No excuses for this.

Also, the tee boxes were not recently mowed either.

Flat, Fun Track Which Is Overpriced

This course is fun to play and has a great location in St. Louis County. However, it is overpriced for what you are getting. It always has some of the best greens in the area – however, the rest of the course is in just decent shape. Some fairways and tee boxes need some work. They are charging $69 because they are in a prime location in St. Louis County. By driving another 30-45 minutes to the other side of the river in Illinois – you get much better golf courses.

Spencer T. Olin $52
Annbriar $70
Far Oaks $76

The front nine is more tighter, longer and harder. It gives you the feel of British Open golf with some double greens. Hole 9 is one of the toughest if the pin is back right. The back side is more of a modern flat, links style course. It is wide open off the tee. The only defense of this golf course are the greens. Plenty of slope and numerous tiers. Located adjacent to the Spirit of St. Louis airport. With numerous takeoffs/landings.

The greens were not aerated. Looks like the course is using the verticutting approach. Very little disruption to the greens surface. On the far right of holes 2,3,4 & 5, they are bringing in dirt which looks like it came from the bottom of a lake. Not sure what is going on here.

What is GOOD about the course…
The greens. They have consistently had some of the best greens in the area.
Location. Located in West St. Louis County.
Friendly. The staff is very accommodating and nice. The starter is great.

What is NOT SO GOOD about the course…
Some of the fairways/tees are not the greatest. They have drainage issues throughout the course and you will find numerous bare spots.
The course is flat. No elevation changes.
They are charging too much considering there are better course designs and pricing options available in the area.
Cart paths. Probably the worst cart paths you will ever experience.

Better Courses in The St. Louis Metro For The Price

I like this course. It is a no frills, fun course to play. However, it is overpriced for what you are getting. It is in decent shape but not outstanding shape. They are charging $69 because they are in a prime location in St. Louis County. By driving another 30-45 minutes to the other side of the river in Illinois – you get much better golf courses (some better prices too).

Spencer T. Olin $53
Far Oaks $65
Annbriar $70
Gateway National $77

The front nine is more tighter, longer and harder. It gives you the feel of British Open golf with some double greens. Hole 9 is one of the toughest if the pin is back right. Located adjacent to the Spirit of St. Louis airport. Very noisy with the numerous takeoffs/landings.

This was a bit unusual. Hole 10 green appeared to be just recently aerated. The only green like this. Lot of sand on this green.

What is GOOD about the course…
The greens. They have consistently had some of the best greens in the area.
Bunkers. They were all raked and much better than the last time I played here a year ago.
Location. Located in West St. Louis County.
Friendly. The staff is very accommodating and nice.
Water On the Course. Even had cups of ice already prepared in the clubhouse.
Yardage Markers in Fairways. They have red, white and blue stakes on the edges of the fairway.

What is NOT SO GOOD about the course…
Fairways. The fairways are a bit rough. In better shape than a year ago. They have drainage issues throughout the course and you will find numerous bare spots.
No yardage markers on par 3’s. I will never understand why courses fail to do this. Again, only slows down play.
Cart paths. Probably the worst cart paths you will ever experience.

Outstanding Greens, Location & Price. Fairways, Bunkers & Cart Paths Need Improvement.

The front nine is a bit more tighter and gives you the feel of British Open golf with some double greens. Hole 9 is one of the toughest if the pin is back right. The back side is more of a modern flat, links style course. It is wide open off the tee. The only defense of this golf course are the greens. Plenty of slope and numerous tiers. The green on hole 18 was so much firmer than any other green.

Located adjacent to the Spirit of St. Louis airport. Very noisy with the numerous takeoffs/landings. We were lucky to see numerous vintage aircraft the day we played.

What is GOOD about the course…
The greens. Only greens better are Gateway National.
Location. Located in West St. Louis County.
Price. The $64 green fees on a Saturday morning, is what you would expect for this course.
Friendly. The staff is very accommodating and nice.

What is BAD about the course…
Fairways are rough. You are playing this course for the greens, location and price. Not for the condition of the fairways. Some holes are extremely rough. Holes 2, 4, 16.
Rough was high. Hard time finding balls. This only slows down play.
No yardage markers on par 3’s. I will never understand why courses fail to do this. Again, only slows down play.
Cart paths. Probably the worst cart paths you will ever experience.
Bunkers. Some bunkers raked while others are not.

In summary, I like this course. It is a no frills, fun course to play. Just remember, you are playing this course for the outstanding greens, location and price. You just have to put up with the poor fairways, bunkers and cart paths.

Landings at spirit

Course was in good shape as far as playing conditions. Greens were fast and run true. Only negative is the cart paths. They could use some work to smooth them out or replace them. Very bumpy ride with seams that could knock your fillings out even if you slow down.

Nice Conditions For October

Wet windy day, The greens were some of the best condition wise that I have played in a while The greens were some of the best condition wise that I have played in a while. They were tricky and not a lot of flat spots so putting is a challenge at this course but the conditions were very good overall the course played well and I have no complaints about the plane conditions or the layout. Two things that stood out though was the very unfriendly staff and a pro shop that was probably the worst I’ve ever been in. They have nothing for sale other than some drinks if you need supplies you better come prepared and don’t dare ask anybody working there for some tees or a sleeve of balls because you’ll be met with old and ignorant responses. on multiple holes they were mowing and blowing which is understandable but not when we’re trying to put T off or hit shot in the fairway I was very amazed at how little they cared for the golfers on the course at one point one of the guys in my foursome was about to hit a puddle and the guy on the mower saw that he was putting and just continue to cut the fringe as we stood there and we waited and waited he didn’t shut off the mower he didn’t stop he just kept going very odd haven’t seen that many courses before if they cleaned up a few things they have a nice
