Whirlwind Golf Club - The Devil's Claw Course
About
Devil's Claw is one of two golf courses at Whirlwind G.C., part of the Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Chandler. In addition to its views of four mountain ranges -- South Mountain, the Estrella Mountains, the San Tan Mountains and the Superstitions -- Devil's Claw overflows with Native American culture.
A round on the Devil's Claw at Whirlwind Golf Club begins on Greasy Mountain, a par-4 424-yarder that faces Muh-wah Ha-dahk - the Gila River Indian Community's name for South Mountain. Things get long on the fifth, Maricopa Journey, a par-5 593-yarder designed to memorialize the travels of the Pee-Posh (or Maricopa tribe) from the Colorado River to where the Gila and Salt rivers meet. Go home via Going Home, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 442 yards from the Black tees. As the Gila River Indian Community sings it, "Our songs are ending as you go your separate ways, take along with you the good songs that were sung here today, as within your hearts."
Don't go straight home: You can still fit in another song after golfing the Devil's Claw golf course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in the clubhouse, which features a fully stocked bar and plenty of plasma televisions for relaxing and catching up on other sports.

Par 3, #7 - Beautiful! Photo submitted by u000002627226 on 06/02/2020
Long from senior/ladies tees
We played after morning rain and the course was practically empty. Got the round done in under 4 hours and only had to wait on the back 9. Tee times were in 9 minute intervals, so we got lucky that it was fast.
It was nice to play outside of a residential community, but you're spammed with ads on the cart. Every other hole they were running their membership program ad, when you were trying to figure out distance off the tee. Hole #7 had an employee asking for charitable donations off the tee which was something I've never seen before.
The course wasn't difficult, if you are straight off the tee then you will be fine. Hole #9 was the most interesting with a divided fairway that requires strategy. Most greens only had one greenside bunker, several had hills that would hold balls.
Course was 5540 from the ladies tees, including hole 3 which was 530 yards. Par 5's averaged 477 yards, Par 4's were around 320.
Greens were in good condition and were fair speed. No rough, just dead grass, and painted grass for fairways. Tee box grass should have been cut shorter, but tee boxes were flat.
Drink cart came around a few times but no way to order food at the turn. Water was provided in the cooler. Cart GPS was annoying - there's no signs on the course where to drive carts, but if you drove into an unmarked restricted area, it would shut off. Sometimes that was 80 yards from the green, sometimes it was 30 yards. Finding hole #2 was an adventure.
Devils Claw
Course was in great shape , staff was friendly and helpful, we will be back !
Devil’s Claw Round
Course is in great condition and has spectacular views. We started late in the day and had to miss the last three holes due to sundown because the group ahead of us were a bit slow-may want to spread out the tee times. Cart service only passed by once for a last call. My only complaint is that the gps on the carts be adjusted to allow for normal operation on a wider area off the cart paths. Many times we were trying to turn around next to path only to have the warning pop up on the screen and cart stop then crawl back to the path. Really enjoy the course and the resort.
Must play
Always a treat to play, conditions were very good, multiple tee boxes made it playable for all and the pace was outstanding
Outstanding Day!
Whirlwind’s conditions, service, and pace of play were outstanding. November course conditions exceeded expectations!
Great course
We enjoyed our day course was excellent, staff ard friendly, great practise area, and good food!!!
Great course but slow greens
First time playing Devils Claw course. Unfortunately it had just reopened after overseeding so it was cart path only which slows down play. Really enjoyed the layout and the course was in perfect condition (as it should be with no carts driving on it). Only complaint was the extremely slow greens which caused many three putts by everyone in our foursome. The greens are soo large that it made it hard to get your first putt close unless you had a really good approach shot into the green. I did like the fact that they have GPS on the carts which really helps when you are unfamiliar with a course. Pro shop staff and Starter where very friendly and helpful.
Devils Claw
Nice course and practice facility. No place to get food or drinks at turn & the Cart Path only rule is a downer.
Beautiful course, but management needs work
We played cattail with a 12:52 tee time and literally were waiting at EVERY hole. It took us 5 hours to get through a round due to waiting. We never saw a course Marshall. Groups in front of us were screwing around, practice putting etc. we love this course but will not be back. It’s waaay too expensive to deal with this type of frustration at every hole. Also, this seems to be appealing to the younger, less serious golfer. At one point we saw a cart with three 20 something’s riding in a single cart. Not pleased with our experience this year or last year. We won’t be back.
Really good
The design and condition of the course are excellent. Service was friendly and helpful. The only negative was that we had to keep the golf buggy to the paths at all times because of the overseeding and watering of the fairways. This meant that play was slower and judging distance and club selection more time consuming. But carrying would have been feasible as distances from greens to tees were not long. Of course the weather was perfect which is why we came to Scottsdale in November from the UK where it is now cold, wet and muddy!
Cattail
Our teetime was Devilsclaw, but we learned it was cart path only when we arrived. The starter had openings on the Cattail course at the same time so the graciously moved us over to Cattail. The course was in great shape, and a pleasure to play
Whirlwind Devils Claw
We were the 6th group off on freshly overseeded devils claw. Course is in best shape I’ve ever seen it. Greens are perfect. I’m sure they’ll get quicker but they’re perfect otherwise. Enjoyed the round!
One of the best courses in Phoenix area
Course is in top shape, adaptable to various distances and great greens that hard to read and very fun
We had a nice day
Nice golf course in a quiet location. The course was in good shape, the greens also.
I saw the advertising from the club on Facebook and I thought, this is a must play. On the end i think, there is nothing very special what makes the course more attractive the the others around.
Great course but….
Great course, lush green grass but the marshal was a grumpy, fun sucker, crap talker. Told the people in front of us (who were actually there with us) that we had no business playing this course. Didnt know we had to be part of the PGA tour to play a nice course. We were 10 minutes behind pace of play as a 4 some with no one behind us on the tee boxes. Got done with the course at 4 hours 15 minutes. Probably wont ever go back just for that reason alone. Sad when you can afford a nice course but the experience is ruined by one person.
Whirlwind – devils claw
This is a nice track without too much trouble and it’s always in phenomenal shape. The restaurant is awesome as well. My favorite part of the whole facility is the practice facilities, great range and chip and putt area.
