Who Designed This Course?!
The drive through the center of Prescott Valley to the Stone Ridge Golf course is a night and day experience. An old town in great need of a makeover, leads into a beautiful new housing development where this course is located. The difference between the downtown section and the golf course community could not be more stark. I was looking forward to playing this course but after my round I pledged I would not return because the experience was not much fun.
The driving range was long and deep and made for a good warm-up session. The adjacent putting green, with its undulations, gives you a good introduction to what you will experience on the course. While neither was particularly impressive visually, I never judge a course on the practice facilities. I want to see what the playing experience is like. Stone Ridge was beautiful, had very nice views, some visually interesting holes, is incredibly challenging, eats balls like PacMan, and not much fun.
The course is in terrific condition. The fairways are as lush as any place I have played. The greens are in outstanding condition, though not very fast, and offer a really interesting putting experience due to the number of undulations you encounter. The ball rolled true.
The designer was able to retain much of the natural environment, which was great. But the layout is an absolute head scratcher and a nightmare of an experience. If you like riding roller coasters, you will enjoy driving from the greens to tee boxes. There are way too many forced carries over ravines and other vast expanses. Having such forced carries every now and then would make for an interesting diversion. But geez, on every hole?! And you are constantly hitting off of an elevated tee box and up to an elevated green. There is not a flat lie any place. The back nine takes blind dog legs, elevation changes, and elevated tee boxes and greens to another level. Overkill. If I were a mountain goat I would have enjoyed my round much more.
Great course!
This course is fun to play and is so much different than what we find in Phoenix. It’s an great condition and pace of play was excellent. If you want to play golf in a cooler climate than the valley, they just head 1.5 hours north to this gem.
Great experience
First time playing here, very tough course, course in great shape from tee box to greens. Beautiful sceneries too. Bring a lot of balls if you shoot a high handicap. Will come back to play again soon.
My new favorite course
Unforgettable experience. This course is a must play for anyone who loves golf. Dont pay attention to any of the negative reviews, this place is heaven for even the average golfer.
1st time
Interesting course. layout. Last time I played a course I didn’t like it became one of my favorites. so I will
play it again. Bring a lot of balls even if your straight off the tell! Greens were very tough. If you are slightly off the fairway or green you will be penalized. Back nine slowed way down but over all pace was not bad.
I will say the people working there are very friendly and customer focused. JAG
Beautiful Layout
Course was in fantastic shape. Greens ran true but some real tricky. Score real early on the front the back can take you down. 581 yds. 18th. from the white with a double dog leg blind shots.. I'm an 18 to 20 handicapper. 8 over on the front 14 over on back. too many 3 putts. No lost balls.
Hidden gem as a scenic mountain course
Have played StoneRidge a half dozen times and each round provides a new challenge. A 12 handicapper who appreciates using more than a driver as course management is a key component. Weather is always better than playing in Phoenix, yet at times it can be windy.
Worth the drive from Phoenix
Jason in pro shop was very welcoming. This course is awesome. Huge elevation changes. You Don’t always hit driver. Course management a must. Great fairways and greens. 3 golfers at other courses told me to play here.
I am glad I did and will also praise this great course. Risk Reward shots an fun to play.
Round #1
I really liked the course although for someone who's been golfing only 16mo. It was difficult. I did manage a few good holes a had a fair share of difficult holes. The scenery is magnificent and worth the drive and money to play. I will play it again and next time I'll know how to play it better. Definitely more iron play than long clubs but I really had fun...
Too much fun
This is the first time I have played here. I don't know what I expected exactly, but this was way too much fun. I played from the gold tees. Lots of elevation changes and some forced carries. From the gold tees there are a few blind shots. The wind was brutal at times. It made you really think about your shots. Very windy today. I don't know who keeps up the greens, but that guy deserves a raise. The greens were awesome. A bit slower than I am used to, but soft and receptive. I found that you could aim close to the pin for your chip shots and they would stick. You did have to read the breaks, but they putted true. As long as you putted firmly you were fine. This course was a lot of fun. Oh, one Pro tip: On most holes aim to the left. Many of the fairways pitch to the right.
Amazing course!
The course is beautiful the weather was phenomenal the only drawback was that the pace of play today was extremely slow but still I will come back as it is definitely one of my favorites.
Great Course
This is a great course. The conditions of the fairways and greens were excellent. As per prior reviews, green speed was slow. I knew that going in and still struggled to get my putts to the hole. Views are fantastic as are the sounds of nature. I do agree that you need to play this course a few times to understand what clubs to hit on certain holes. For example, tee shot on #10, 2nd shot on #18. I have played many courses and this is one my my new found favorites. I had a blast playing StoneRidge.
Great layout, staff not so much
Checked in and bought range balls, only to find out range was closed. Let pro know and got an interesting answer once i told him it was closed. Great layout. Greens are a little hairy but consistent
Fun and such sights
Fun layout, if you can hit your target. If not bring lots of balls.
Greens were long and surprisingly slow. Rest of the course was in fantastic shape.
Keeps you interested with canyons and ravines. Great views on back nine.
Surprises you with changes from wide to narrow approaches to greens. Hard course made easier by choice of Tees. Can find your leveled play to make it fun. Hills, canyons, ravines, slopes and huge greens. Very well kept. Can’t rate pro shop and restaurant as we’re not open do to virus.
Fun course
Very interesting course. Need to play a few times to understand distance's to correct landing areas. Was quite windy today and greens were very slow. Was a gun day but a 5 hour round. All in all a fun day and a nice experience.
