Poor del Lago
I love this course. Unfortunately it is showing sign of age and neglect. A lot of the neglect comes from the caliber of payers too. So many times I see players not having good course etiquette. "Respect the course and help Take Care of the Course". Tearing up the fairways , not driving where the should. Par 3's with cart path only. And they won't observe it. They need marshaling Bad.
The course it shelve need some major upgrades. Cart Paths especially. When you let a course run down. The caliber of players don't care either. The better courses in Tucson, restrict the payers entry from the tee boxes to the fairways. del Lago is the wild west drive the carts anywhere you like. del Lago needs to put up ropes and barriers to preserve the course. Here is the two yr. Plan. Shut down one side (9) holes. Do an overlay of fresh asphalt. Put in cart barriers for the fairways. Put in more Trash cans . Some jerks won't use them anyway, throw their beers cans in the bushes. Next year do the same for the other 9 holes. It gets enough play, they just need to put money back in it.
Course has been neglected
The course shows numerous signs of extended neglect. The cart paths are completely falling apart. The asphalt is full of holes and extremely rough. We spent most of the time driving in the rough or fairways to avoid the paths. The bunkers contain a little dirt (no sand) and way too many rocks. They are not really playable. There’s an extreme amount of cut brush and trees piled everywhere on the edges of the holes. The edges of the tee boxes and bunkers have weeds everywhere. The course management seems to think cutting brush is the most important maintenance item. There are almost no penalty area markings that you normally see on most golf courses. When you enter the clubhouse one is hit a very strong sewer smell. Bottom line. “Don’t waste your money or time playing this course”. There are many better golf options in the Tucson area.
Beautiful Course
Played this course with my wife. First time we had played the course (on vacation). Although a bit windy, a very challenging beautiful course. Will definitely play it again whenever we are back this way. Definitely recommend.
Pace of play
The course was in great shape. Played on the weekend and the pace of play was slow. A marshal would have been nice to see out on the course. But still had a wonderful time.
Good Average course
The course is starting to show it's age. The bunkers have always been bad. They said they just upgraded>>>all they did was to put more sand on top of the rocks.
They did a fairly good job of over seeding. There's still a lot of fairways that are in demise. Greens were in good shape.
Just getting old and need some major financial improvements. But all in all, fun track to play
Mindy
Excellently designed course, just needs upgrades. Cart paths and a few difficult to maintain areas in the fairways.
Course is Fun To Play
Only real criticism is SLOW PLAY! Our round was almost five hours and frustrating.on almost every hole. Greens were in good shape, albeit slower than expected. So, putts were hard to read for both speed and break. Fairways in good shape and hitting them is at a premium. Will play again, but hopefully without the slow play we experienced.
A friendly practice round
Played with a friend prior to a group outing. Course was in excellent shape and staff is alwayd super friendly. Understand that periodic mowing after a very successful overseed will make the fairways and greens that much more quicker! It's a challenging track and lots of opportunities to test your golf game.
Resident Rates
I have lived in Del Lago since 2008. Why do we not have resident Rates or Veteran rates? I would play more and use the restaurant more, which means more revenue. However, I have discovered that rates will increase? That only means that I will play elsewhere. I would love to eat, drink and play here, that's one of the reasons I moved here, besides the peaceful town of Vail. I believe the Del Lago Golf course could thrive and have more revenue if residents could play at more reasonable rates, since we live and pay taxes here. This would only invite residents to play more and spend more at the clubhouse and restaurant.
Gem in Tucson area
Just 20 minutes south of Tucson, the course is a hidden gem. Pace of play was great. Conditions were fantastic for this time of year. It was very windy but did not diminish the enjoyment. Nice driving range and great carts. A couple bunkers were void of sand.
We will definitely return.
It is gettting better each week
I play del Lago weekly and run the del Lago Men's League for Events so I see the course of time. For those who have not played del Lago it is a truely Championship layout - one of the best in Tucson, but over the years the course condition, traps, greens, desert area have had varying degrees of conditions. Generally the traps have not been maintained well and are very inconsistent. Greens go from great to slow as molasses. All that being said, in my seven years at del Lago this is the best overseed season I have seen. Lots of grass on greens and fairways. the problem is speed. Superintendent just did not want to cut the greens down. He has now and will continue each week unti they are running around 10 to 10.5 on stemp. Yesterday the course was really good with fairways cut down(not totall down but much better) and greens were running very nice and smooth. They continue to add sand to traps and are doing a better job with maintaining. We all have to rack again as we got away from that during Covid. Overall the course is really looking good and in two or so weeks it will be a great test. Layout when greens get fast and fairways are cut down is a true challenge. Well worth the trip to play a great layout.
I have been playing this course for over 25 years. The course ha had its ups and downs. The course is now in good shape however the bunkers and cart paths are terrible. The bunkers have been bad for a couple of years and it seems that the owner of the course doesn't want to repair them and make them playable.. the cart paths have been bad for quite a while. It is too bad because otherwise it is a very nice course.
Great course and staff
Everyone we encountered at this golf course was friendly and professional. The course itself was in great shape, challenging and fun to play.
I totally agree with this review. Wonderful course layout and design and very challenging. Condition is honestly the best it has been in 7 years I have been playing it. They unfortunately as this reviewer said do not support locals over anyone else and plans are to get worse. I think they have forgotten who supports them during the entire year. This is course is well worth playing now before rates go up. You will enjoy the course and bring your A game as you will need it.
