Red Tail Run Golf Club
About
Red Tail Run Golf Club is situated on the south side of Decatur, Ill. The course stretches across open, gently rolling land where the bird that the club was named after, the Red Tail Hawk, circles freely overhead. Designed by PGA Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd, the golf course features large, undulating greens and wide, rolling fairways. Native prairie grasses also accent the landscape, adding to the layout's level of difficulty. At 5,651 yards, the golf course isn't terribly long but the openness of the landscape means that your round will be subject to the wind. Depending on how it's blowing, it can play much longer. Red Tail Run Golf Club has a mix of challenging and player-friendly holes, giving the course appeal for players of all skill levels. Red Tail Run also has a driving range available for warming up.

Solid Course
Rewards good shots and can punish bad ones. Not for the beginner.
Jerks When Calling
Called the course to place a tee time and the man who answered the phone was an absolute jerk. I love playing this course but every time I drive 45 minutes to get there I have to deal with someone who works there that is a jerk. Please retrain your staff and teach them something about customer service
I did not book a tee time today because of this phone conversation
FUN course - good mix of holes
RTR is a course with a good mix of holes, short, long, medium. We've had unbelievably warm weather (yes global warming is a thing) here in central IL. Still mowing my grass past Nov. 1st and most of the courses have bounced back from a summer drought. RTR is in great/good shape. Rough and fairways are a little on the long side but greens are smooth and fantastic but maybe a little too soft. A lot of foot prints around the holes made it tough to keep putts on line. Bunkers, like a lot of courses in this area could use some work. Like I said, a good mix of holes. Short holes with tough green complexes and some long brutes (par 3s and 4s) thrown in. Most of the dog legs go right, so a fade (4 right hander) is preferred. I'm not a regular but have played here over a handful of times. Greens are just tough to read, try to keep it below the hole. Get there early, nice practice facility. Hamburgers are good too!
don't miss this course
Wonderful public course. Late in the season and it is still in great shape.
A great golf course
I always enjoy playing this course. The course is well maintained and the staff is helpful and very friendly.
The Sand!
Red Tail run is a links style course. I've played it many times and have always enjoyed the course. 4 stars this time because the sand traps had not been worked and some were unplayable. This is not typical. The traps are usually in great shape. Hopefully, the greens keeper will get this feedback. Other than that, the course looked good and played well.
Great greens
Fun and tough to play. Great mixes of par 3's and par 5's. 14 holes of links and rear are wooded.
JC's travels
As an old guy it was a lot of fun from the gold tees.
Great course, very friendly staff
Played on the date of final day of the British Open. The course gave me the impression of playing the Open especially the front nine. Although the fairways seem broad but with strong prevailing wind the abundant Scotish high grass and serial bunkers are true threat. The par 4 dogleg holes and bunkers protected par 3's are tests for players heart and skill. Ball rolls well on greens.
The sencond half of the course are scalped out of the forest. Some holes have to be played blind or with narrow passage from the tee. Course strategy is must if you look for par or better.
Club house is full amenities and staffs are very friendly. The thunder detector is an super advantage for a course in vast plain. The man in the proshop was professionally monitoring the reading and controlling the tee time to ensure safety.
My special appreciation to the same man who was so kind to jump start my car with his own personal SUV. Though I don't know his name but I strongly believe this young man deserves all the good bless of the God.
The experience in this great course is totally pleasant and unforgettable. I would like to return to play and recommend to all !
Good Playable Course
Good Playable Course Reguardless Of Your Handicap.
Wide Open
Great layout. Fairways are in excellent shape. Greens had some rough spots where ball marks weren't repaired. Overall, a pretty nice course.
Awesome Course
The course was in excellent condition. My son played the black tees and really enjoyed it, and I enjoyed watching him on this PGA Tour quality layout. Kudos to the Decatur Park District for this challenging but fair course!!
Great course!!!!
Course was well maintained.
Staff was friendly.
Great course to play.
We enjoyed it.
Don't miss playing this course
Ray floyd would be happy to see this course that he designed several years ago. Ray visited this course shortly after it was built and rumor was he was about to pull his name since the condition was sub par. Do yourself a favor and put this course on your bucket list.
This course has matured since its opening.
Really enjoyed the course. Staff were very accomodating since we arrived late to the course. However, a small local group apparently were playing a money game and held up us and three other groups behind us the entire day! Rangers were aware of the situation, but chose not to correct the slow pace of play the group insisted on maintaining. Very disappointing. Otherwise we loved the layout.
Outstanding from start to finish!!!!!
A truly wonderful experience!!! This is what a great day of golf is all about. Challenging course, but not brutal. If one hits the shots, scoring will follow. Multiple sets of tees will accommodate golfers of all skill levels. I highly recommend playing to the fronts of the greens, as anything behind the pins will fall away. The staff was as pleasant as humanly possible. To say the course was is terrific shape doesn't do it justice. The greens were fairly quick but true. We drove for 2 hours to get there and it was worth every minute!!! We wanted to keep playing so we didn't have time to stop in the clubhouse for a bite, so I couldn't give an accurate review of the food/drink.
Great course
Overall, it was a great experience. Front nine played easier. Wide fairways and large greens were a benefit especially for my wife who is fairly new to golf. Great options on the tee blocks which helped make the round suitable for both of us. Was worth my 1 hour drive and will be back to play again.
No real savings
There was no real savings after paying Gilfnow there fee. As I understand from the representative form Reduce Tail I didn't get a savings.
