Windswept Dunes Golf Course
About
Windswept Dunes Golf Club tumbles across a dramatic landscape covered with white sand dunes accented by lush green fairways. The golf course appeals to players of all skill levels thanks to player-friendly features that are balanced by strategically placed hazards. Although each hole shares the characteristic of being lined with dunes, they each maintain a unique character. The rolling fairways are often wide and generous off the tee and the sand dunes, which stretch from tee too green, are only punishing of the most errant of shots. The approach shots though are as demanding as the tee shots are forgiving. There are numerous bunkers fiercely guarding the large, smooth greens. While the occasional water hazard comes into play, the bunkers are the most challenging element of Windswept Dunes Golf Club.

Excellent value for the course condition in this area
Worth the drive up from the beach considering how good the course condition was. From the reviews I read earlier in the year I was a little concerned the course would be in rough condition but it was fine. The driving range was tore up, don't know what the story is there, otherwise a really good facility in this part of Florida populated with too many overpriced courses. I also liked the fact it didn't have too much water. Most Florida courses are too dependent on water hazards to make it challenging but instead, this course is challenging by being super-long with huge greens. The good news is there are 5 different tees to match your skill level.
challenging course in great shape.
This is a very nice course in Freeport, Fl. It is in great shape right now. I believe the back tees play 7400 yards so it is as hard as you want to make it. Bunkers are everywhere and the greens are HUGE so bring your short game! If you can tolerate the heat, the best time to go is between 12 and 2. I played 18 by myself in 2 hrs and 15 minutes with a 12:45 tee time. Green fees are $65 if you dont go through golfnow. I paid $40. If you play on a budget like I do then I would recommend this course as long as you go through golfnow.
Windswept Dunes by Chef Boy
I got this round for $30 on a hot deal and finally got a GREAT value. I had previously played Ft. Walton Beach and Shalimar, both in dismal condition, one the fairways, the other the greens. But Windswept had well maintained fairways and the greens were in very good shape although rolling at about an "8", certainly no more than a "9". I think if they took the extra step to "roll" the greens they'd putt at a 10 or better.
Like a Marine Drill Sergeant, Hard but fair.
Great layout. Many of the holes were long but if you missed with you long approach, you were not unfairly punished. We thought the greens could have been faster but with the severe slopes, some of the pin placements could have been impossible if the greens were tuned in. I think the management made good choices with the difficult pin placements while the greens were slow from the winter to summer transition.
Tough Course
This was a tough course for someone who does not shoot in the 70's or 80's. The greens had been recently punched, and there was a LOT of sand on this course. I would have to get a lot better before I return in order to be anything close to competitive.
Non-crowded, very scenic and enjoyable golf course
Windswept Dunes is a very nice golf course. Course offers many options for degree of difficulty based on 4-5 sets of tee boxes. The course was well-maintained and above average in terms of value for the money during the time I was visiting Santa Rosa Beach, FL. The only negative is that the greens had been aerated a few weeks earlier and had not fully recovered. As a result, they were a little bumpy and slow. Another two weeks and they should be in great shape. Non-crowded play was another big plus.
Stay away
This is a course that is dying. As you arrive at the driving range and you see no grass, my first thought was "oh no!". The tees had not been cut in days. Large bare and black areas in the fairways where Mole Crickets had eaten them. The greens are large but very poor condition. For what they charged I would not go back. This is a 20 dollar muni at best. Stay away!
Very Long Course, Nice Layout
I disappointed in the speed of the greens, very slow. The course was in pretty good shape. The fairways had a lot of Poi Ana growing in them, not that big of deal but I see problems down the road.
Great day
We have played this course many times and we have never been disappointed. Great course for the money. We will be back many times in the future.
Great tee to green
The staff was great, the tee boxes and fairways were in excellent shape. Some of the greens were a little rough. Overall I had a great day playing golf there
Hidden Little Gem... outside of the Destin, FL area.
WOW!!! this place was GREAT... its about a 20-25 minute dirve outside of Destin, FL in area of Freeport, FL... this is truly a "Hidden Gem".... this course is outside of the "city" area hussle and bussle.... but AWESOME views and layout of holes... and beautiful landscape and sand dunes....
Average course and condition
This course has good bones but has nothing special to make me want to play it again. The tee boxes and traps were a little rough from a condition perspective. If you're looking for a quick inexpensive round it may be for you. If you're looking for a well condition and course to remember, I'd look elsewhere.
Worth the drive..I guess
Drove up from Seagrove for an 8am starting time. Wind gusting 25+ & 50 deg. Dude behind the counter seemed very put out to be there, no good morning, nothing. Payed for a small bucket(should be free with greens fees) & proceeded to range. Even at 8 am approx 5-6 groups had gone off & the starter was clueless. Didn't pair up any twosomes & play was starting to stack up. Told him I was in a hurry & he let me start on 10..500 yard par 4! Made par and flew around the back, bout an hour fifteen. Played the championship tees at 7750, nice challenge, lotta long irons in. Problem is red tee boxes, kinda degrading making someone stretch it out that far & look at a red tee the whole time. Course was in ok shape- tee boxes un level, turf bare in quite a few spots & greens a lil furry. Prob rolling 8-9. Would like to play it next time in better shape & better weather. Recommend only if you check course conditions first.
challenging but fair
all levels of golfers will find this course a challenge but fair if played with some thought to placement of ball. The greens although very large were in great condition for this time of the year. The tee offs needed some work and the fairways were beginning to come around.
worth playing it at least once. be careful how much you want to bite off as the distances vary greatly from one tee to another.
it was worth driving an hr to play the course. conditions were good. severe sloping fairways and greens. greenskeeper must have had a fight with significant other the night before we played. many cups were positioned on slopes.
Lots of fairway bunkers
I was a little disappointed after hearing this was such a great course. It's a long drive from Destin and not worth the drive. Play was very slow. We waited on every shot. There are other courses nearby that are better.
Challenging course. Challenging greens.
I enjoyed the course. It can humble you. Looking forward to playing it again. Course and greens in great condition.
