outstanding
Given the amount of rain we've had the past several weeks, the course was expectedly soaked. While it was difficult to find a dry spot, the course was still playable. That said, we moved up a set of tees to offset the lack of roll and had a great time, basically having the course to ourselves. The greens were more receptive than I'd ever seen them, and putts rolled beautifully. The layout never disappoints. The course is interesting and challenging.
Frost delay for 2,5 hours
I paid for 18 hole and played only 9 because there was a frost delay. Stuff was not friendly of that. I finally played from 3pm to 5:15pm. When I asked for an rain check they told me unfriendly to contact Golfnow directly. Maybe you can fix this and send me the rain check or an bonus to play somewhere else. Thanks Klaus Gerhardt
Birmingham Area Gem
Ballantrae is one of my favorite courses I’ve ever played. It’s tucked away in a gorgeous part of the Oak Mountain area south of Birmingham and has so much character from the neighborhood, the clubhouse, signage, and it’s signature Castle that it feels like a total escape from reality for an absolute bargain.
Great design that makes you excited to play the course over again the second you finish. Quality course management and greenskeeping that stands up to the highest rated courses in your area and keeps your focus on the course design and your own game.
Several holes that any course would be honored to call their signature hole. Standouts in my opinion are the 2nd, 5th, 13th, 14th, 17th, and 18th. (Yes, that many.)
The staff is also second to none. Very accommodating, genuine, and helpful. Accepting of singles running solo (don’t use this as a GUARANTEE - this is just my experience of playing early in the week and it’s hard to find accommodating courses in the area.)
I make the 35 minute drive to play this course as often as I can and it’s worth every penny. If you’re in eastern Birmingham area/HWY 280, do yourself a favor and drive down 280 to Chelsea, and take 11 through Oak Mountain to get there. It’s a treat I look forward to anytime I make a tee time and one of the prettiest drives in the area.
Slow Down
The course was everything filers in Alabama say it is, rolling hills, beautiful greens and wildlife everywhere. The greens were absolutely gorgeous in November. Literally green green green. Not a complaint but on this day the greens were very fast. I would play this course again and again but now I know more about it I can attack it differently. The clubhouse is currently undergoing renovations (not an issue) and the grill is still open, with delicious food.
Hidden Gem
Traveled from Roswell GA to Alabama for the first time. Just picked the course randomly from list online. It did not disappoint me. The course was well maintained and layout was pretty challenging. But, it was fun. Facility was cool for being a city course. Pace of play was horrible on the back 9. Was waiting around every hole. Food at grill definitely could be better prepared. Not that hard to put a little more effort or attention to have napkins and sauce in a bag for guests.
