Critical club selection
Great day, tuff course. Requires critical club selection.
Conditions deteriorating; Bunkers a Rocky Mess!
I have golfed at Darkhorse numerous times and I enjoy the layout and scenery. The course conditions continue to deteriorate with apparent irrigation issues whereby some areas are bogs (after 4 months of NO rain) and other areas are hard pan. The biggest issue with the course is the lack of sand in the "sand" traps. It has reached the point where you often risk damaging your clubs if you choose to actually play out of the hard dirt and ROCK-filled bunkers, and if green-side impossible to get under the ball to stop it on the green. This has been an unaddressed situation for some time now, but it has now reached the point of absurd. Some of these bunkers should be labeled as unplayable with free drops.
Have played here a lot, use to be a good value and use to be in good shape, not any more. Sand traps (ha ha) were never great but now they are a joke, tees less then average, way to much water in some areas and loads of bare spots in others. It doesn't appear that anyone cares any more other then to just take in the money and do nothing else. My under standing is the course is back for sale or headed to BK. If you done have the money or the interest in maintaining a course the way it should be then get out of the business. The staff, for the most part are pleasant, the food is good. Its just to bad the owners don't care.
It used to be my favorite course. Now, fairway has lots of bare spots and greens were too soft and not maintained at all that you need baseball bat to put or rather hit.
What a waste of beautifully laid out course that was ruined by poor maintenance.
Course in great shape, good challenge!
I've been playing here weekly in a men's club since May 2018, it is one of the best courses within 50 miles of Sacramento. This course is very well taken care of, the temperatures have been warm lately and the course management and employees play the course weekly early in the mornings in order to know how to maintain the fairways and greens.
On this date, I played in a tourney and tied for 3rd with my GHIN and I was in the 6th group off the tee at 10am. Every tee box is in good shape except # 6, all fairways are in good shape and most greens are in great shape.
This course will test every club in your bag, most par 5s are unreachable in 2 unless you are a scratch golfer and can consistently drive 280 or better, even then # 11 would be a tall order. These greens run at or about 12, you better have your putting in order.
It will grow on you after you play it often! Love this course....
Course layout is fun. Way too many ball marks on the greens. Bunkers weren’t raked the day I played and I don’t just mean by other golfers, the greens keepers never raked them. They need to address the ball mark situation because this time of year there’s no reason they wouldn’t heal properly unless they are completely ignored by the greens keeper.
