Excellent course, among the best I've played
Everything about The Jewel was first class.
Quality putting green, driving range and even a chipping green with a bunker to practice sand shots.
The conditions of everything on the course was excellent, which was impressive since it had just rained a lot the previous two days and the entire night before. We weren't even sure if the course would be playable that day. I was especially impressed by the great shape of the bunkers despite all the rain.
The greens were immaculate, rolled well and were slightly on the quick side, but each hole had at least a little break, which made us all miss a lot of putts.
The rough was surprisingly thick; thicker than I was used to.
I loved the course layout and variety of different holes and tee shots. Almost every shot felt uniquely different and interesting.
On the front 9, holes 1-3 and 8-9 were more of a treeless "links" style with plenty of bunkers, including fairway bunkers, whereas holes 4-7 were suddenly "back in the woods" with fewer bunkers.
The back 9 was more of a traditional layout with more water and scenic views of the surrounding terrain.
Six different tees to play from (Red, Copper, White, Blue and Black, as well as a Blue/White option) to offer an appropriate challenge for a wide range of skill levels.
Quality on-course amenities, like plenty of drinking water and actual bathroom buildings instead of, say, outhouses or nothing at all.
Nice clubhouse with bar & restaurant and outdoor patio on top floor overlooking the course. The chicken breast on my caesar salad after we played was surprisingly well-cooked; juicy & delicious. Although, someone in our group complained about the long wait at the turn for a hot dog.
They also had electric golf carts, which I always prefer over gas.
Great course
I truly enjoyed my round of golf there. I'm definitely coming back play there. Very soon. Hopefully before the close of 2023 season. Most definitely in 2024 golf season
The Jewel
Great golf course-great staff-played it many times and will continue to do-in the future!
Jewel review
The best golf course in SE Minnesota-great course-great staff-they always have a smile on there face-a private club experience at a public golf course!
The Jewel is a "10"
18 unique holes meandering alongside and through Mississippi river valley bluffs. Scenery is spectacular. Course design is different from Nicklaus/Palmer/Dye/Fazio courses I have played -- Hale Irwin has his own style. Strategic bunkering throughout. Yet playable to the average golfer with wide fairways and rough. Conditions were pristine. Greens fast, fair, and in perfect condition. I've golfed throughout the U.S., and this course as nice as any Ive played ... it's a "10"
Stunning
What a place. This was round two of the day when it was 100+ degrees outside. Thank God the back nine is up against one of the bluffs so we were able to find some shade. Gorgeous facility, given the heat everything was in great shape, and cannot wait to get back there and play again
The Jewel Shines Everytime
The Jewel Golf Course has not disappointed us this summer. Our last round was picture perfect. From the moment we checked in we were treated like pros. The course was in excellent condition. The greens are impeccable and predictable. The bunkers played soft. Overall a memorable experience. We’ll be back!
The Jewel never disappoints!
Perfect tea boxes, amazing condition. Overall, the course is challenging you’re so playable! Our favorite and southeastern Minnesota.
Very nice
Lovely late – summer afternoon of golf. Very interesting layout. Well be back
Things I liked:
- Great variety of strategic holes. A great mix of open, links style challenges and tight tree-lined holes.
- The conditions were good; the greens and bunkers were well maintained. Some of the fairways were showing areas of burnout.
- The starter was very helpful.
Things I did not like:
- Incredibly slow place. No ranger or monitoring of pace.
- For the greens fee, I was surprised there was no GPS in the cart.
Things important to me:
- Rates are not posted on their website.
- The rate included a cart. This course is walkable, but unless there’s a reduced rate, I would take the cart.
- Don’t recall any water coolers being out on the golf course.
- A plastic, poker chip branded ball marker. My least favorite.
Great Course
Great Course. I normally wouldn’t spend the money but GN had a great rate.
Always a pleasure
Never disappoints. Everything in top notch condition. Staff and facilities are super.
9 out of 18 holes had grounds crew on them
I usually don't get angry, but this is a drive and a treat for myself. Drove an hour and thirty minutes to get there, arrived 40 mins early, to go hit a bucket of balls and putt , tee time was 810am. Front desk tried to rush me on the course I politely said no, I wanted to warm up and play a good round. Then it was cart path only which is fine , but 9 out of the 18 holes had staff fertilizing the fairways and greens and still mowing throughout the entire round. The last mower I seen was on hole 15. For that kind of money I expected more out of the course. Also no cart girl on fourth of July untill 11am was silly. Rant over, I personally won't be back.
Course in great condition
Greens were a little on the slower side but made for good scoring conditions.
Don’t miss it
If you’re near it make sure you play it. Challenging, great staff,
