Nestled in the heart of the Rockies, Golf Granby Ranch boasts unbelievable mountain vistas. It consistently ranks as one of the top public golf courses in Colorado. Formerly known as Headwaters G.C., the course originally opened as a nine-hole layout in 2001 and has since expanded to a full 18 holes and underwent a renovation by Nicklaus Design. The golf course tumbles across dramatically hilly terrain that does more than offer great views, it also gives each hole a unique character. Sand traps can be found throughout, you'll even see some in the middle of the fairways, which is a Nicklaus signature. There are also natural lakes and ponds that come into play on several occasions. The golf course can be a tough but six sets of tees make it approachable for any skill level.

Beautiful Views

We got rained out after five holes and they gave us a rain check. I'm looking forward to playing the full course again.

Great course

Played two days here and all 12 of us had a great time. Found the back nine to be the toughest, with the front nine having the best scenery. There are multiple tees to fit every handicap.

The staff is very friendly and helpful.
The clubhouse is disappointing..... considering the quality of the course.

Nice collection of holes

Like many of these courses in the ski areas of Colorado, the views are magnificent. And Granby Ranch has plenty of those, plus some really good holes. No complaints there, because this course is a blast to play. My only complaint is the routing with some long distances between a few holes, including what seems like a mile on a dirt cart path to get out to the 10th. But once you get to these holes, the drive is well worth it. The 10th, for example, is a par 5 with the tee shot over water. Also, the greens will certainly grab your interest. On the back nine there were some questionable pin placements (near impossible putts), but we're chalking that up, perhaps, to someone just having a bad day.

Great course

This is a course that was on my list to check out. It did not disappoint. The staff welcome was good. The practice facility has the limitation that it is a bit short, so hitting longer than a long iron or hybrid puts balls beyond the fence, durn. The course was engaging but not excessively challenging. There 2 9s are quite different. The front 9 has more water hazards. The back 9, far enough away to make walking this course challenging, has more elevation changes, nice. There are some demanding carries that will get your attention. The finishing holes are good. The clubhouse has been upgraded. Food options are a bit limited. This is a good golfers course.

Golf in the Mountains (really a Valley)

I have played Granby Ranch at least a few dozen times. That in and of itself should be some type of endorsement.
I have always played in "Shoulder Season" as rates are below $50 and with Golfnow in the $20-35 range. Granby Ranch has been under a couple different owners in the dozen years I have been going, but the layout is always the same. This isn't really Mountain golf, but golf in a valley. The front nine really has zero elevation changes until your approach to #9. The back nine has a couple of elevation changes, but nothing more than a club. The back nine does have plenty of views towards Rocky Mountain National Park for the fans of eye-candy. The two nines are separated by quite the drive between them, but you really shouldn't walk this course unless you are just doing the front nine.
In the afternoon, the winds can be up and are at least two clubs.

The course itself is for fans of what you see is what you get. There is absolutely no quirk. This is good for a resort style experience where you don't want to get beat up or have a 5 hour round due to everyone looking for their ball. I do know that the two back tees will provide plenty for anyone as the fairway bunkers seemed to have been placed with these tee boxes in mind. Never seen anyone tear this place up from any tee box. I shoot around my handicap here as do my single digit friends.
The most challenging holes, for me, must be the 6th and 16th. Both are long. The 16th has a creek in front and is a dogleg so the drive must be pure. The approach plays into the prevailing wind. The 6th also plays into the prevailing wind. The par 3s vary in length. The back nine par 3s have water in play or out of bounds. The front nine's are longer. All par 5s are easy to reach if you choose 3 shots and manage to stay in the fairway-as it should be. Miss the fairway on your fist or second and par can be had, but recovery isn't simple. Two shots is difficult but not impossible. Miss and 6 is in play quickly. The course doesn't have any trees nor a lot of sand. Sand is really only in play if you miss the fairway-no cross bunkers. Over all, this is typical American hit it in the fairway or pay the price golf but with nice mountain views. Nothing unique here, but no holes that are bad or that leave you wondering what the architect was thinking. That seems to be what most golfers want. Greens are typical size with a little undulation or tiers. Nothing that leaves you wondering nor needing a membership to figure out.
The course has a range plus putting green, so it has what you need. During the summer, the grill is open and quite good. There are also days when the family holes (2 of them) are open and you can take the kids. These used to be warm up holes, but now they are rarely open.
Others have mentioned this, but the course is rarely full. I have gone around many times in 3 to 3.5 hours and have never been over 4. If you happen to show up on the rare day that there is an outing or a group on vacation, the staff is very nice and will let you tee off the back. Rather than wait for 1/2 -1 hour and be stuck behind 4 groups, I have gone off the back first a few times. Very nice indeed.
If you are up in the mountains looking for a game on your way to Rocky Mountain National Park or staying in this area, then play here. I wouldn't plan a vacation around it (but who plans a Colorado Vacation around golf as opposed to the Mountains?) If on that type of vacation and you want to get in 18 on your way in or out-this is a good place to be.

good conditioning but facilities rugged

I have played Golf Granby several times and have always found it to be in great shape . The course still has many gravel/dirt cart paths, A mile or so ride to the club house on gravel and port-a-poddy as restroom facility on the course. We were a two-some and started the round behind a five-some( which the starter allowed) and another two-some. The five-some did allow both two-some to play through and once the slow two-some in front of us allowed us to play through on the 6th hole we flew around the last 12 holes in about 2 hours.Play from the correct set of tees and this is a fun course.

Great condition

Stayed at our time share which is 5 minutes away from the golf course. Course was in excellent condition. Greens were the best I've played in Granby. I would reccomend playing this course to all. Playing the back tees is a great challenge for the low handicappers. Play well.

Hit em straight!

Don't let the lack of trees fool you. If you go off the fairway just a few feet you lose your ball in the tall grass. This is a great mountain course.

Excellent, but where is everyone?

Right, I'm questioning why there were only about 4 groups out on the whole course on 4th of July weekend afternoon- with the putting green being torn out and no visible sign of replacement and nothing being done for years about building a real clubhouse- is this place financially on the rocks? I hope not, since it is a real gem.

As others have said- great conditions (greens were a bit slow, but true) great views, great layout (back 9 especially). Grass on tees and fairways were a bit long. Mowing around greens was strange- seemed like they purposefully left a longer 10 ft strip right next to greens.

Driving range pricing is a bit strange- $10 for an hour per person- can't I get 25 warm-up balls for $4-$5?.

But, really enjoyed having such a great course to ourselves for a cheap Golf Now rate......go enjoy this place and give them some business.

Great Mountain Course

Staff was very friendly. They let me go out 20 minutes early since the course was not crowded. The greens were slower that last September. I liked the slower greens. Course is in very good condition. I enjoy playing at Granby Ranch.

Head pro is not professional

The course is beautiful although the greens were slow due to early season mountain conditions.

The head pro went off on me on the driving range for not paying for range balls in advance. I had planned to stop and pay on my way to the 1st tee. Very unprofessional in my opinion. I have been playing golf for 40 years and never experienced anything like it!

Phenomenal layout, but signs of neglect

What a wonderful layout!!

The front nine is relatively flat and open, with beautiful mountain backdrops. Shot selection is straight forward--what you see is what you get.

The back nine follows the contours of the surrounding hills, making for some exciting elevation changes and challenging blind shots.

On the negative side, the greens from front to back were quite variable, and some of the sand traps are turning into grass bunkers. There was no food and beverage service the day we played.

Great design, well maintained.

The course offers a challenging design with deceptive distances. Requires careful club selection when teeing-off. MUST stay in the fairway! Very well maintained. One of my favorite mountain courses in Colorado.

Scenic Treat

This hidden gem lies behind mountain range off highway 40 outside Granby. The former Sol Vista the course is in a resort /residential complex still under construction so travel between back/front nines takes a while. Golf Now discounts make it affordable on occasion so look for them because the experience is worthwhile and golf memorable. Club house is temporary. My first review was of Grand Elk, not Granby Ranch, played both in two days.

Valley Challenge

Great summer option for golfers staying in the Winter Park/Granby area who have a discount card or use Golf Now or other reduced rate services. The course is challenging from all tee locations but has many open holes that give you a breather. Course knowledge though is a must on several tee shots as high brush obscures fairway/pin locations. Staff is helpful and the restaurant serves excellent food/CO craft brews.
