Long in the shadow of its big brother at Royal Dornoch, the Championship Course, Struie has come into its own. Over the past few years the golf course has received some major renovation, and today it is a spectacular 6,265-yard par 71.

Struie is accessible to a range of skill levels, but it will force you to use every golf club in the bag. It's particularly tricky if the prevailing winds aren't cooperating.

The course is open to visitors, and green fees are considerably less than for Royal Dornoch Golf Club's Championship Course.

The facility includes a clubhouse and comprehensive pro shop.

Dornoch's little Brother

The Struie course at Royal Dornoch is a considerably easier but fun complement to the Championship course. It's open with some tricky greens. The first two and last two holes are memorable. Since there's no range at Dornoch, I like playing 9 holes or more at Struie as a warm up.

Focus on Brora and Golspie instead

Played Struie Course today and really disappointed. After being wowed by course like Brora thought this would be good as it belonged to Royal Dornoch. No views to speak of as the many holes run along a large caravan park ( and roads to /from it ). Struie Course architecture uninteresting in most areas. Really not worth the outing - focus on Brora and Golspie instead - a world of difference.

Struie lives in the shadow of legend

The Struie might be the best secondary links in Scotland. It has been pieced together over the years. Architect Donald Steele gets credit for its design when five new holes were built in the 1990s. Playing it is an enjoyable walk through the gorse and forest. There are no blind shots to torture you like there are on the championship links. There's no elevations, either. Only one hole roams along the firth. Nice views of the Dornoch town, including the cathedral, add character. A burn dissects several holes, making them tougher than they appear. For those golfers who grow tired of the beating the championship course inflicts, the Struie provides endless joy and relief.
