Uphall Golf Club
About
Uphall Golf Club began in 1895, when the golf course was erected on terrain leased from Sheriff Shairp, who lived on the neighboring Houston Estate. It's a convenient golf course to reach, sitting just seven miles west of the Edinburgh Airport, outside of Uphall Village. It is an 18-hole parkland course set amidst mature trees and features relatively flat land within somewhat tight boundaries, making for a test for all golfers.
Uphall Golf Club's course measures 5,588 yards at par 69. A round of golf kicks off on Mains, a par 4 that comes in at 404 yards from the medal tees. It makes for a challenging opening hole, especially when played into the west wind, requiring an accurate tee shot so as to stay clear of troubles on the left and right, and then golfers are just a medium-to-long iron from a slim green. The round concludes on Binnie Craig, a par-4, 383-yarder that offers an excellent closing hole, again when that west wind is blowing.
After the round, check out the Uphall Golf Club's clubhouse, where management assures that although you're at a "Members Club," you'll be "made extremely welcome."

Uphall golf day
We had an excellent thoroughly enjoyable day at uphall
Fantastic Course shame about the members
Great course but daunting a lot of traffic and holes that criss-cross. Greens not great but to be expected this weather and time of year . Poor experience with members / locals , mild aggression , maybe just bad luck but certainly not welcoming however guy who worked in starters office was very warm and informative. Also could do with some better sign posting . I would play again in summer maybe get warmer welcome.
Great round of golf
Shame club house was burned down as previously they had great facilities
Wouldn’t stop me playing it again as they’ve got a wee cabin for coffee and we’re extremely welcoming
Significant works ongoing!!
Some good and some not so good.
The good first; fairways and greens (the ones which were on, I’ll come back to that!) were in great condition, dry despite loads of rain previously and lush. There were some lovely holes, notably the par 3’s. The layout is a little quirky, the first few and last few holes being on one side of the road, and there’s a few shared fairways / greens. The middle part of the course can seem a bit straight up and down, but overall there’s enough variety in the holes. There’s also a few bits of the course you could definitely get lost searching for the next tee box, but staff and members were very helpful in keeping us right.
Now the bad; when we’d spoken to the starter he mentioned there was some work going on. We were already aware the old clubhouse had burnt down and was being rebuilt, so the 18th was temporarily a par 3, which was fine. He then said they’d cored a few greens, so there “ may be 2 or 3 winter greens also”… we counted 11 winter greens! Some of them look like they’ll be out for quite a while too - why not just be honest and let us know? We would probably have chosen to play elsewhere, as we had a couple of options. We enjoyed the round due to the otherwise excellent condition, and would consider revisiting when it’s back to it’s full and proper condition and layout (new clubhouse due March / April 2024)..
Lovely wee course.
Great wee course. Quite short but you really do have to plot your way round otherwise it will bite you. Greens were perfect. The18th is reduced to a par 3 as they build the new clubhouse. Still a lovely hole but I felt it was over cautious. A ban on using drivers on the hole would have been enough. I’ll definitely be back.
“SAS” clique oblivious to their pace of play
Course in good condition, greens running true and great welcome by the ‘temporary clubhouse’ staff.
Due to a fire some years ago, there was no clubhouse, also the temporary cafe was closed, just our luck on the day though, that said, would’ve been nice to have known this in advance or if someone could’ve stood in for the person on holiday.
A mid morning tee time had us out behind the “SAS” members (Stands for Saturday and Sunday I was told) so therefore they will be regular stalwarts and really should have known better. From the second tee, they held us up, we were only a 2 ball, there were no competitions on the course and so absolutely no reason for us not to be let through.
These sort of guys should know better, I’m a club member elsewhere and I’d be embarrassed if this happened on our course.
Unfortunately I won’t return as I can only play at weekends and would not want to get stuck behind them again. For such a short course, an almost 4.5hr round as a two ball has left a sour taste.
Played here on 11-09-23, and once again, I didn’t disappoint, I’ve played here on several occasions, and yesterday was probably the best I’ve ever seen the course, the fairways were lush and cut to perfection, while the greens were stunning and quick. Hats off to the greenkeeper and all his staff, for all there hard work. Cant wait to return.
Excellent Value For Money
Fantastic course for the price, course conditions were fantastic and the greens were lightning quick. Need to be accurate off the tee as some are quite tight lined with trees.
One shared green but no problems there. The new clubhouse looks like it will be lovely when it's finished!
Fun day out.
We got very helpful instructions before starting, The course was in great condition, the fairways were better than my lawn at home ! We gave up on Hole 3 after losing some balls, we should have remembered the instructions we were given ! From hole 4 onwards there were some long holes, but we enjoyed the whole experience.
Mr kerr
Had a great time on the course, weather was great the course was in fantastic shape.will be back to play in the near future.
Perfect conditions
Beautiful day, course absolutely fantastic condition, good mix of short/long holes and very trick par 3’s.
New clubhouse being built but portacabin for refreshments.
Starter very informative about course, overall good friendly experience with locals .
Great day
Great course
Course is play really good, but watch those greens are fast.
First time visit
Good interesting course, and as the starter told us, will enjoy it better 2nd time round once you fully understood the intricacies of certain holes particularly those on the car park side of the main road that bisects the course.
Fairways were in good nick, but some of the greens still needed a few more weeks good weather to get them right - some were still heavily fertisied / sanded.
Interesting course in two parts either said of main road - one side challenging with some curious holes needing a bit of thought and the other more of a standard parkland structure, but still challenging.
Finally, thanks to the starter for welcoming and giving us some good gen on how to play certain of the more interesting holes.
Great course
Brilliant course and a great guy that runs the starter box, Richard. Made us feel super welcome and gave us a run down of the full course, really knowledge and a proper gent. Will be back
