Holes 18
Type
Style Parkland
Par 70
Length 5914 yards
Slope 126
Rating 69.4

Niddry Castle Golf Club offers 18 holes of par-70 golf over 5,914 yards, providing a good course for all levels and ability of player. Magnificent vistas provide a glimpse of the Pentland Hills, and the holes all offer their own unique tests and hazards - plus there's a castle smack-dab in the middle. If you can control your shots and manage a solid golf course, then this patch of parkland ought to be on your itinerary for any golf trip to Scotland.

Fire away at Cannons Drive, the Niddry Castle Golf Club's 198-yard par-3 first hole, featuring a green that slopes away. The long hole is the sixth, Castle View, a par-5 524-yarder - pick right or left of the fairway at the tee to avoid sticking yourself behind a large tree for the second shot. Gan Hame, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 404 yards, provides a superb finishing hole, with an elevated tee shot to a fairway that features trees on both sides.

If you're going in winter, when the club sees fewer players, Niddry Castle Golf Club offers golf-and-coffee specials.

Hidden gem

Great course, greens are immaculate for the time of year, slightly confusing layout on the first couple of holes and a small clubhouse but it wouldn’t deter me from returning. Overall excellent value for money and a very well maintained course in lovely settings.

Good course

Good golf course, easy course to navigate if it's your first time there, only thing I would say is that I felt the greens were very slow, but all in all a very good course that will test any golfer.

What fairways?!

A rare opportunity to get out and play a local course on a cracking day. Whilst the walk was great, and the sun was shining, the course did not.

Disappointed to find it difficult to distinguish between fairway, rough and green I struggled to appreciate the course for what it perhaps was.

Having visited previously, and played in open competitions I found this time to be a let down. A number of years back.

Whilst I appreciate its early in the golfing season, it is May, and greens were not good.

The newer holes on the course were a fraction better and on a positive note you could see that underneath all that grass perhaps was a set of smooth, well maintained greens.

Fairways and rough were strewn with loose grass from cutting yet, still fairways were poor.

All that said, I'm writing it off and will play again but I would like to know how a price tag of £25 a round midweek is justified in its current condition. But perhaps I was just unlucky. I'm sure it's looking top now.

This is purely perception so don't be put off, as I'd say it is likely a maintenance routine which should have been reflected in the price of the round.

Disappointment

Played this course on Sunday as part of a 4. We were all really disappointed in the course. From the first to the last, the greens were in terrible condition. More akin to winter greens only with less grass and more sand. Fairways weren’t ideal and a lot of grass clippings were left. Finally the rough was ridiculous. 4-6 inches thick and made finding balls incredibly hard, even if we knew it’s exact location. It’s a shame as it has the potential to be a good course. Only structural downfall I would say is the layout. There are multiple blind holes that aren’t clearly marked out, which means attacking greens is hard and pins impossible.

Poor layout

Poorly structured too many holes crossing over , too many long walks in between to next hole, tee offgiving way on other holes, one hole you have to walk back just to play the next tee . Alot of leaving bags a far distance if not wanting to walk double the distance with it. Fairway not very well cut . Feel sorry for club members.

Good course, but have your wits about you

Really enjoyed playing this course, it’s got a bit of everything. It’s well kept but I thought the greens in places needed work and they were all a bit slow, but ran true. There’s a shared fairway and some tees I’d say are in the line of fire either by being close to the green or under other tees. This is fine but I’d like to see better signage explaining who has priority. I’ll play it again though.

Disappointed

Whilst made to feel welcome, the course was probably the worst I’ve played in terms of layout. Dangerous at times and few tee boxes near the previous greens. Too many blind holes and cross overs. Could probably make a better nine hole course rather than pack 18 into it. Won’t be back in a hurry. Not the staff’s fault but feel little value for money.

Hidden gem

I'd seen the course on golfnow on numerous occasions but had no idea where it actually was. I found it again when trying to find somewhere to play at short notice mand thought I'd give it a try. I'm delighted I did. The fact rst six holes were great fun and very quirky, before moving on to what I believe are the new holes which were definitely challenging. I can't remember much about the 18th as it was play in the dark time. Will definitely be back to try it again very soon.

Interesting holes

The course in general has some good holes but the routing is bizarre. Hitting over greens and tees to shared fairways seems mental, I’m glad I don’t play medals here as it seems quite dangerous when busy
