Vanny needs a face lift
I play here at least 3 times a month because I love golf and it's 3 blocks from my home. The course is not in the greatest of shape and is riddled with potholes. The tee boxes are the worst in the city and need serious repair. The food selection is very limited at the turn but the clubhouse has a better selection. There is a good selection of beers both at the turn and at the clubhouse. The staff is somewhat friendly on some days and depends on what side of the bed they got up on. I enjoy playing here and recommend the course if you have 5 - 5-1/2 hours to kill on the weekend because the pace of play is horrendous on the weekend. During the week the course plays a lot faster and you should be done in 4 - 41/2 hours. They do need to update the golf carts as they are always stalling and at times can't make it up the hill without great difficulty. On occasions you can catch a dirt bike or two on the back four holes. Not sure what's going on with the dirt bikes on the course and the parks department really should look into this.
Overall the golf ranks 3 out of 5 and I'm being generous. there are much better golf course nearby such as Lake Isle, Mosholu, and Dunn Woodie. They all have practice facilities and updated golf carts. The food is also better at Lake Isles and Dunn Woodie.
Good course. Good shape. Pace could be better.
Course is pretty much always in good shape. Good layout. Challenging and fun. Great snack shack you pass about 3 times a round. Many positives!
Having played this course many times and especially a few times recently, my one major critique is pace of play. They seem to stack the tee times pretty tight, even though the starters App seem to know there are a couple areas that bottleneck.
One reason for the bottlenecks could be difficult layout for walking players. I generally prefer to walk when I play, but I usually ride here. There are about 3 places on this course where the distance between holes can be over 10 minutes if you’re walking. Unless you’re playing with someone with a cart, who is willing to tow you or let you hop in for a quick ride…walking is gonna slow things noticeably in these few spots. AND the course only has a limited number of riding carts available for rent, so there are always plenty of walkers on the course. I believe this could be a big reason for some of the 5+ hour rounds. Add a cart shuttle service for walkers in these spots???
All things considered, great course. Definitely recommend.
Vanny
First time playing this course in about 4 years. It has deteriorated significantly. It is a cow pasture, tee boxes are mostly hard pan, fairways are clover and dandelion, greens are barely hanging on. Played on a Monday late morning. Halfway house was closed! Only 2 water jugs on the course and one was empty. This used to be the best public track in the Bronx, NO MORE! Play Pelham or Split Rock. Don't waste your money on this one.
Excellent
6:03 tee time, beautiful in the morning, had 3 giant snapping turtles walking across the course!
A nice course
The course is nice, starts fairly flat then hilly on the last four. It is not an easy walking course due to distance between some holes .
Good golf course with easy reach of Manhattan
There aren't too many golf courses within 30m of Midtown, this one is. It is a well maintained public course, the tee boxes and fairways are good, but the greens are hard and won't hold the ball. Enjoyed the round. Car Parking is $3, to be paid in cash.
Old Vanny
This is my home course, so I am trying not to be too bias. I booked an afternoon tee time, and the pace of play was under 4 hours. The pace of play on the weekend is at least 4-1/2 to 5 hours. There have been times where I just only play 14 holes because of it. This is the main reason I rather play during the week. The course has improved overall compared to last year. The tee boxes are in much better shape compared to years past. Walking the course is difficult because of the long walks between several holes. The food on the cost is average but better than some of the other public course in the city. the clubhouse Burger is awesome. They have an average bar and staff is friendly and accommodating. There's also plenty of available parking for free and for a fee. You have several nice restaurants nearby and I recommend Rick's Steakhouse on Broadway. Outside of the pothole all over the cart path it's a decent course. I give 3-3.5 stars, which is average for a public course.
