Some Friends at #17 Tee Photo submitted by LeChefDean on 10/19/2013
Great course will play again
Overall really loved this course. The condition of the greens and fairways was pretty good. Some of the tee boxes were a little worse off but overall nothing bad. Staff was very friendly and even let us start 45 min early, The pace of play was defiantly better then last time I played. Was able to get through 14 holes in about 3 hours. great value for only $25
Marshall Canyon … The Best LA county Course in LA
Want a challenge? Want a quite place to play Golf? Want to see deer on the course. Marshall Canyon is the course for you. Challenging layout, great greens (they break away from the mountains) and a reasonably quick round. I like this place and you will too … Marshall Canyon
Get a discount.
Pros: interesting holes, got on for $40, course in reasonably good condition. Cons: rough grass mowed very unevenly, p. O. P. was 1.5 hours on front and 2.45 hours on back, wouldnt honor golf pass amenities.
Pace of Play
Took 3 1/2 hours to play 9 holes and we just left. Course is descent just need to set the pace of play for everyone
Potential- but…?
I don’t live in the La Verne area but, via GN (Hot Deals, course details, ratings and reviews) on GN, I have come to appreciate and even trust the ratings of the players like me and of 90% of the courses, it seems to be true. Combine that information with the discounts and deals we get and that allows me to venture a little further and try places that are a bit beyond local. Unfortunately that’s not the case with Marshall Canyon.
Let’s start with the good:
Greens were very good to even great in some cases. Rolled true and were pretty speedy- despite the recent rain. They were also well maintained for the most part.
Fairways were also good there were a few areas that had some drainage issues and some standing water but again crazy rain was the cause of that.
Tees and yardages were all well marked and accurate
Pace was fine and it was busy when I played. Side note: a lot of times I read where people rip or are annoyed with “rude” marshals or starters. Certainly they all should be polite/professional but, keep in mind those guys are there to help you (everyone) keep moving so we can better enjoy the round. Remember that the next time there’s no marshal and there is chaos everywhere during your 6 hour round
The course setting and views are wonderful. Built into the mountainside, there is wildlife everywhere- deer, geese, ducks- and while we didn’t see any they’ve had bear and mountain lions apparently too.
The Bad:
The entire property- from the sign, on the road, the parking lot, the clubhouse, the range, and the grounds and course surround are all ‘spent’, unkept, in disrepair, overgrown, and on and on… It really appears as very little effort at all is put forth on anything other than the fairways and greens.
I mentioned the greens and while they were mostly in very good shape- it seems that no one is helping to keep them that way (golfers). Ball mark’s left without repair by the dozens- on nearly every hole. No signs, no mention by staff.
I wouldn’t expect the greens to stay nice for long.
The tee boxes are awful- you name it and one tee box or another ‘suffers’ from it. Bare/dirt, shin high/uncut grass, not level anywhere. Seriously they should put mats on each cart to use instead.
I’m not sure if it’s because they are under staffed or what but, there’s no transition/secondary cut from fairway to rough or green to fringe- on some holes there was no fringe and if you were even 3 feet off the fairway you were in 8” or more grass. This wasn’t like this on purpose or to contribute to the “slope”- it’s serious neglect.
Because it only is about 6100 from the tips it has extra 3s and shorter 5s. There are several blind shots on approach and on a shorter course it makes it feel like a bit like hitting through the mouth of a clown. I get that they’re challenged but, there are ways around it. Although this would seem as much an issue if they’d address some of the other stuff
Here’s my summary: First, I’m baffled by some of the 4 and 5 reviews. This place doesn’t come close to either and when you think of the ratings taking all things into consideration? Then this place is at an overall equal level (3.9-4.2 rating) to places like Black Gold, Eagle Glen or Sierra Lakes. None of those are upper echelon but they’re ions better than this course This is another course owned by/bought by American Golf. It’s become my impression that they will do anything to make a buck without spending a penny and unfortunately Marshall Canyon is a poster child for this. They have a good “web” team and spend some money on marketing an image on the internet- and also scrubbing bad reviews and ratings. BE WARNED- this course looks and plays nothing like it appears on the website or any of the stock photos. It has potential because it is on a beautiful track of land and if they just chipped away at some of these issues this COULD be a decent course. But there’s no commitment to general upkeep and I think all the winter and even recent rain has been a bit of a saving grace for them. Would I play again? No- I live 35 miles away and even at the bargain of $16 I paid via a Hot Deal on GN- it’s not worth it.
If you live within 20 miles and can get a similar deal? Sure. Don’t pay full price- ever and don’t play here unless you simply cannot find a time elsewhere. The natural beauty, scenery and wildlife aren’t close to making this place worth a substantial drive or paying a fee that we’d expect to pay comparatively elsewhere. So if you’re hedging and haven’t played here before? I’d say: PASS.
Horrible pace of play
How the heck they allow single golfer and two golfers to play 😩😩
Great time with friends
Had an amazing time out here. The greens run really fast.
Bad pace
Dear god space out the tee times and stop trying to get as many people booked on a single day. So much waiting on a 6am tee time. Love the layout and environment but the tee times HAVE TO CHANGE. 6 hour round and the poor senior group that was walking had to play with us riding them all day.
course is well maintained, challenging greens
i played with 3 other guys that I met at the gc.
Nice quiet place to unwind, deers are roaming around.
Marshall Canyon Golf Course
We had a 9am teetime we showed up 8am hit balls check in and paid only to be told they are behind 45mins due to they booked 12 players at 520am it does not get daylight until 5:45 -6am so they waited until daylight to teeoff and pushed everyone back 45mins and we were told to bad the starters here suck at best. 6 hours and 30 min round after the delay.
Garbage
Called in to cancel tee time I made on golf now day before tee time.
They charged me for foursome $270 anyway.
Course denied me reimbursement through golf now.
I will never play here again
Nice scenery and nature if animals
Course was in awful condition, to many bumps on the course while riding the cart, causes back pain and annoyance during round, group in front of me was super slow and threw off momentum. Scenery was beautiful nature, canyons and mountains, but course wise it was terrible condition and overpriced a bit, conditions were awful fairway grass was super long as if you were in the rough. Dry patches everywhere as well. Tee boxes are all beat up as well.

I am baffled by your harsh comments on the Course. You compared the condition of Marshall Canyon with Eagle Glen and Black Gold, which are typically at $80 twilight rates, are you mad? This is a decent public course at a very reasonable rate and despite of lack of an active marshall, the pace is decent as well. I agreed with you on the green condition but that's a behavior issue from the golfers and they should be identified and banned from playing ever.
