Powfoot Golf Club was founded in 1903 and designed by the legendary James Braid.

The first nine holes present a stiff test in the best links tradition and the final nine encompass a mixture of parkland with gorse and rough.

The ninth hole, known as "Crater," gets its name from the fact that a German bomb was dropped here during World War II. This provides the par-4 hole's defining feature - a great, deep hollow some 80 yards short of the green.

The highlight of the back nine could be No. 11, which has everything that the golf course is famed for. Your tee shot has got to be straight, which is no easy job when that wind is blowing. Once over the incline, you will find the green nestling up to your right, surrounded by shrubs, plus a bunker on either side of the green.

The links part of the course follows the shoreline of the Solway Firth and presents some breathtaking views of the North Lakes mountains and the hills adjacent to Dumfries.

Loved it

What a course. Played in a gale force wind and still thoroughly enjoyed the course. Pro shop and clubhouse staff were great. Can’t wait to tackle this track in easier conditions

Great course in excellent condition

Really enjoyed playing the course. Greens were exceptionally good and the rough cut to sensible levels. The clubhouse just needs an upgrade, but all required facilities are available.

Challenging Links

Played in their Open competition (albeit very badly) but still enjoyed everything about my day. Scorching hot day, real challenging links conditions, tight fairways though largely manageable rough to play out of. Not the longest of courses but still challenging as the wind will always be around somewhere.

Superb course

An excellent course we’ll set out with a good mixture of holes. Greens ran brilliantly and fairly quick. A good test in difficult wind conditions however I absolutely loved it. Some drivable par 4’s too depending on the wind direction. 5 stars.

Wonderful Round

Played Powfoot for the first time in late Nov after several days of heavy rain. Course was in excellent condition but with 4 winter greens as a result of the wet conditions. However, the course played absolutely fine and we were lucky it was sunny and flat calm.

Must visit course!

The whole course was in great condition for November even after a few very wet weeks. The course is varied with plenty of wide fairways and fantastic greens.

Perfect but with flaws

Initial welcome by bar staff and Pro were very good and helpful.
Car park was 60% full.
Course is situated amongst.caravan/Lodge parks.
Layout was OK but a bit "up & down" for me. I prefer a voyage of discovery although views of the Firth are very welcome.
Overall with my Golfnow discount I was well pleased.

Beautiful course in a trailer park

We arrived at the course 45 minutes before tee off to warm up on the range. The range was closed with no warning or apology. The course is tight and accuracy is key. The wind is strong so controlling ball flight is important. On the down side of what is actually a lovely course, there are park homes all around the course which makes it feel a bit like a trailer park course. The gorse is thick and a ball off the fairway is probably lost on a large number of the holes. We had fun but there were definitely downsides to a £50 course.

Lucky weather break

Forecast for rain for the full round but luckily played in T shirts all the way round.
Course in really good condition for time of yr and impressed with greens as to be expected on a links course. Couldn't fault it for the £26 Golfnow fee and played one of my best ever rounds so made the say even better.
Very friendly staff in golf shop-wished I lived nearer and would be delighted to call it my home course
Genuinely can't wait to return
