The Cally Palace Hotel features a private golf course that is carved from the scenic parkland that surrounds the hotel. The course closely follows the natural contours of the landscape and utilizes the towering trees that dot the terrain. Golfers playing the course will have the opportunity to behold panoramic views of Cardoness Castle, Rutherford’s Monument, and the Fleet Estuary. In addition to the spectacular scenery, the layout offers a challenge for all skill levels with hidden burns and water hazards throughout provided by the Cally Lake. The Cally Palace Hotel also offers a practice area and putting green for golfers to use. Conveniently since the golf course has no members or competitions, it is rarely ever crowded.

Walked

18 holes of golf at The Cally Palace

We thoroughly enjoyed out three ball in this peaceful setting. Whilst we were not troubled by it , some of the walks from greens to the next tee were quite long. The greens needed attention but for £25 were more than adequate. We were all high handicappers and definitely lost a few balls,, but that was driver error as the fairways were well maintained

A day in the woods

Reception staff lack a understanding and knowledge of golf and we’re uncooperative and unhelpful in making the booking.
The course is an excellent layout and it’s woodland views spectacular.
The course is under new ownership and there was evidence of more attention being paid to it than previously. There are some tough holes around the lake that would test anyone.
A good challenge for the average golfer ( 12-24 handicapper)
Lovely weather on this day which always helps. The facilities are excellent in the hotel but a little pricey.
Well worth a visit. I hope Bespoke Hotels invest in it going forward as it has lots of potential if looked after.

A lot of potential

A course of narrow fairways lined by mature trees. Great views when the trees were not in evidence and vistas unfolded. Underfoot conditions rather soggy after a wet month but not sure how well the course stands up to bad weather generally. 13th hole needs a bit of a rethink , perhaps moving the tee or cutting the rough differently. At the moment it's not a fair test. The 15th could do with a marker to guide to the hole which is entirely hidden from the middle of the fairway. Overall the greens were OK and fairways quite good but both needed a bit more love and care. The bunkers were very poorly prepared. A great pity on a course with lots of potential.

Course in excellent condition

The new owners and ground staff have done a great job of looking after this course. Everything was just perfect. Great value for money. Challenging course with every hole different from the others. The flow of the course is just perfect. Greens nice and flat. The views are wonderful as you travel around the course. A must play if you visit the area. A very must play again if like us you live nearby.

Great surprise

Well what a surprise Cally Palace was! Course in great condition Looked like it had just been mowed. Hence fairways lovely and short and stripey Greens played better than they looked. Fairly flat (that suits me)
Bunkers in great condition too
As mentioned in other reviews 13th is signature hole but loads of other good ones - 3rd over water to the green
Closing stretch from 13 onwards is tricky and 18th very much risk and reward short par 4
Highly recommend this course at £14.99 and had it all to myself. Plus the cricket ground behind 13th tee- bliss

Good Value and Good Challenge!

Really enjoyed my solo round today!
The course was in great condition. It was a great challenge and really enjoyed the layout. Accuracy off the tee is key and you are rewarded for good placement. Would love to play it again with that knowledge.
The par 5s especially were great fun and a real test. I found the last 3 holes the biggest test to a good score. Need to stay switched on till the end!
It was great value for money with the "hot deal". Although, I would have felt different paying full price. The greens weren't in the best condition but that's to be expected and didn't detract from a really enjoyable round.
Cracking course in a cracking setting!

Nice course

A really nice layout, lots of relatively short par 3s and par 4s, then they throw on a 580yd par 5 and another that closely skirts the lake. It was really quiet, we only saw one other player, so I suspect that they don't have a lot of money to spend on the course - the fairways were good, the rough trimmed but some of the greens were suffering from bare patches and moss. Had a drink afterwards on the terrace. Hope they can keep up to the course, would play it again.

Lovely course, recommend if un the area

I was on holiday nearby and booked a hot deal at £14.99 and it was a bargain.

Signed in at reception, the young lad was very helpful and as my first time provided me with a course guide which was handy.

Lovely course, nice layout and variety of holes, 13 was tough! Greens were nice and running true

Finished the 18th and walk past back of the hall, there a nice bar/ outdoor area for post round beer

I'd recommend and definitely play it again

Presents some challenges

A lovely sunny day and we seemed to be the only ones on the course at times. The fairways are great, but experts on golf greens would probably have issues with these. One has to bear in mind it is a hotel course and not championship! We had no real issues. There are several holes where there is a fair “hike” between holes and sometimes the paths are a bit rough, stony and uphill! (Seats were thoughtfully provided at the end of these hikes) The 14th hole is probably seen as the signature hole. A par 5, with lake on right, rough on left, steep run off left to right and river and bunker in front of green. The full Monty of hazards then! Long, inaccurate hitters would probably be punished. (I am neither, but still did not score!) The river runs through the course and is in evidence on other holes. Would we play it again, yes, yes and yes. It is set in the most beautiful scenery and is quiet and peaceful. With the added bonus of the hotel bar and restaurant at the end of the 18th providing the most delicious food to aid one's well being upon finishing quite a tough course.

Needs some TLC

First off we really love this course, the grounds, layout and walk round are really good and in our view second to none. Price was good value. Whilst recognising just coming out of winter months the course was just not up to scratch and not a patch on previous owners. Most of the fairways had not been cut and it was like playing on the back field. The fairways that had been cut had lots of grass cuttings on them. Bunkers need some sand. We did get the impression there might be work ongoing e.g. some tress cut down and drainage ditches cleared. We hope this is the start of a revamp of what was a treasure of a course. Will visit again in a few months and hopefully it will be a vast change.

Tricky course but very enjoyable.

Good challenging and fun course to play, it’s not busy so no being held up or pushed by other groups, the only other golfers we seen we’re teeing off as we finished. £15 to play is a steal. Course was in good condition considering the rain it had, overall I would definitely recommend playing the Cally and I will definitely play again.

Incredible clubhouse and quaint, rolling parkland course.

Great value hot deal on a nice course- a steal compared to some of ten visitor fees in Dumfries. Some areas of GUR and couple greens not perfect but perfectly playable (3,5-4 out of 5). Otherwise lovely rolling parkland. Some shortish par 4s with scoring opportunities mixed with some very tricky par 5s, particularly down to the lake on the back 9. Lovely hotel clubhouse with good food and friendly staff.

Peaceful and Enjoyable

An interesting course that has a few challenging holes, The course is gently undulating with quite a few long walks between holes. Greens were ok but the fairways were covered in grass cuttings which somewhat spoiled the overall course condition.
We enjoyed our round at Cally Palace and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates peace and quiet and enjoys a leisurely round
