The Cowden at Muckhart Golf Club
About
The Cowden's nine holes at Muckhart Golf Club are the original nine where golf has been played for nearly 100 years at the foot of the Ochil Hills. Virtually no changes have been made to the layout during this time.
Muckhart Golf Club has 27 holes comprising three courses of 18 holes on a rotating basis. The Cowden Course measures 3,251 yards from the medal tees, and par is 36 for the nine holes.
Cowden's signature holes are the fifth and ninth. No. 5 is a challenging par 4 crossing two valleys, with the green backed by the Ochil hills. No. 9 is normally the last hole in an 18-hole round and is considered one of the finest finishing holes in Scottish golf. The drive has to be steered between a stream and a water hazard, and only the very longest hitters will consider taking on the burn in front of the green with their second shot.

Half good, half bad
Our front nine was the Naemoor set of holes, which were fantastic, not much more needs said.
However, after the turn we played the Cowden nine, which are a significant downward shift in quality.
It feels as though a few holes are shoehorned into a limited space. This means blind tee shots and approached to greens with signs such as "if you can hit past the bell wait until the green clears' even though you can't see the bell, and also it was our first time playing!
There are a couple of really nice holes such as the 2nd, 5th and 9th, however they were let down by others, particularly the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th which felt like playing a totally different, much lesser quality, golf course.
So basically, Naemoor good; Cowden not so. Would like to see what the Arndean is like, hopefully some other time.
great course
7 of us played today and the course was in great condition everyone enjoyed the course weather was great all the staff were very friendly and helpful would definitley would play again.
OK, but not much to think about
Initially very impressed. Nice chat with Pro shop man and advised which two 9 holes we were playing. Fast greens and pretty backdrop of Ochils against a rolling landscape of hills was nice, but then I realised there was nothing to think about. Everything is fairly straight, so hit it and hit it again.
My wow factor is thinking back as to which holes were really tricky and how to play them next time. Well, there weren't any really.
Nice course for 'just a round of golf,' but I need a bit more mental stimulation and risk and reward.
First time
Was my first time here course was great enjoyed it and will certainly be back and will recommend to friends.
Wet Day at Muckhart
Booked a round at Muckhart on a wet day. Although the weather was not in our favour we persisted and had a good day. Course was in good condition despite the weather. Some major changes occuring on one of the 9 Hole curses but does not affect the golf. Overall a good day out.
Value for money
Nice course I played with my son in wet conditions
Pro was friendly and advised us on the two sets of nine we should play. Lovely views and fairways excellent. Greens not great
Would definitely play again in future hopefully in dryer conditions
The greens were in excellent condition for the time of year . Staff were friendly . The newest course of the three 9 hole courses is Naemoor and has some interesting holes and pleasant views of the Ochils . The Cowden course used to be fabulous but the sad removal of a lot of the forestation has spoiled its appeal unfortunately. Overall 7 out of 10
Tale of 2 nines
First time playing the course and was pleasantly surprised by the first 9 on the Naemor course. Well set out and well established. However, I cannot say the same for the back 9 on the Cowden course. Has the potential to be a good nine but is in its infancy. Greens in really bad condition and a lot of work being done on the surrounding areas. We felt it was night and day from the front 9 and certainly not worth £20 a round per head. I feel that the 2nd 9 should be at a reduced rate.
Worth a visit
Course in great condition, all staff so friendly and very welcoming, would definately recommend a visit, will be returning, many thanks to all at Muchart Golf Course for a grwat day out, cheers
Great greens
Great golf on a well kept course and a very nice welcome from a friendly pro, always a nice touch!
Going to recommend a work outing there in the future and hope to be back soon.
Can’t think of anything that would have made the trip better.
Absolutely out of this world - views to die for and a wonderful course
This is the nine at Muckhart I would always want to play - every hole is a jem and the setting is absolutely out of this world.
The 5th a par 4 - 420 yards which with a good drive that catches the slope will leave a 9 iron, but don't be left of the pin - the down hill putt is scary.
The 8th a par 4 - 300 yards needs a drive down the left edge of the fairway but watch the gorse and pine trees, again the green slopes away to the right front edge - putts from above the pin need to be avoided.
We had a wonderful time taking photos and taking time to soak in the views.
Everyone we met were friendly and the clubs pro was so helpful - we can't wait to return and return we will!!
Excellent course set in magical scenery
The Arndean course is a wonderful course with great holes set in the magical scenery of a Scottish glen. Our favourite holes were the 5th a par 4 set across a sloping fairway to an elevated green and the 5th a par 3 infinity green 190 yards away. the backdrop to both holes was breathtaking.
Everyone was friendly - the golf pro especially helpful - highly recommend a visit
Nice course
A great play to play golf. With 27 holes, 3 x 9, good variation of holes. Fun. Will play agsin
