Beware of the green staff. - they bite
The sun was shining on a glorious late May Friday morning. The sunshine always brings the best out in people so our golf party of six were looking forward to a Sun drenched round at Shotts golf club. Even the gentleman in the pro shop warning that the greens weren’t at their best could not dampen our sense of enthusiasm. Apparently the green keeper had left at short notice and the new one was due next week. Wouldn’t speculate as to why he left but we were soon to find that the remnants of the green staff perhaps weren’t feeling fully engaged with life at shotts
The course was blooming and a fine challenge for us mid handicappers lay ahead and after an auspicious start I landed an 8 iron to within 10 feet at the 5th and walked forward with confidence towards my par saving putt. By now I was grateful of my factor 30 sun cream and as I walked onto the sun kissed dance floor the water sprinklers were dancing a meet jig. They changed direction like jimmy Johnstone in his prime and I was soaked . My fellow dancers were also on the soggy side so we sought the help of a member of the green staff who was working nearby. As another green staff member had turned off the sprinkler for us two greens previous we asked if this could be done again to allow us all to three putt. The member of staff approached and from a distance it looked like he had forgot his factor 30 as his face was bright red. It turns out this wasn’t sunburn but rage. “ I’m not turning it off “he shouted angrily. “ as we stood aghast like contestants in a wet t shirt contest. When we highlighted that this request was granted at the previous hole he exploded. He was closer to my face than a gimme putt ( and I don’t give gimmes unless it’s shorter than Ronnie Corbetts inside leg) So the unexpected shower meant nobody managed a putt on the green and we agreed to call it two putts all round. I was asked my score by one of the group to mark on his soggy scorecard. Suddenly he’s back. “What did u say to me “ The debacle was in full swing but we just moved on to the next tee in disbelief and watched the waves hit the group behind ( They couldn’t putt either ) It is no wonder that HMP shotts which was only a 5 iron away is so overcrowded with inmates if this is the behaviours of the locals so be warned if you visit shotts golf club bring boxing gloves not golf gloves. A shameful day for Shotts boxing club
Hidden Gem…
What a lovely course, fairways in great condition and greens immaculate considering it was October, the course it self is well laid out and no serious hills or climbs. One thing I have to mention is the welcome we got. There was the possibility that some of the greens may be winter greens but the Pro unbidden told us if that was the case he would sort something out for us to make sure we got another chance with greens all on. How nice was that, fortunately the sun came out and all greens bar one where on. Fantastic gesture and one that ensures we will certainly return to this lovely golf course. If you get the chance play it, you won’t be disappointed…
Great layout
Really friendly staff. The course had just cored and sanded the greens so putting was a bit sore or maybe it was me.
Lovely course in great nick!
Enjoyed playing every hole, so much variety difficulty and fairness but no time lost in looking for wayward shots which meant finishing the round in 3 hours : )
Mature fairways were a pleasure to walk on and hit off, tee boxes all near greens - could do with a sign at 16 pointing to 17, we did get lost here but the members were good natured and tolerant.
Lovely clubhouse, very welcoming and we will eat there on our next visit. Can’t speak highly enough of this course, definitely return and highly recommend : )
Great course
Played this twice now, it's definitely a challenging course but really well maintained and lovely holes. The greens are now prepped for winter but that will be the same for all courses.
Excellent Course
Excellent course with plenty trees to keep it interesting.
Not long no par 5s but good tricky holes that require accuracy of the tee.
Course was amaculate.
Would definitely go back and recommend to average golfers like myself.
Pleasantly Surprised - a Gem
Can't believe I haven't played this little gem before. Superb condition, friendly Pro, near perfect greens and enough challenges to keep things interesting.
Thoroughly recommend and thanks to the team for being so welcoming !
Excellent
Last played the course 4 years ago and what an improvement excellent condition great value
Reasonable course
Staff & members were very welcoming, course was in reasonable condition but felt the greens were worn & had a few bare patches (seed was down). Fairways were reasonable & rough was not overly punishing. Felt it was let down by having no Par 5 holes (1 if playing off medal tees) if the club could find a way of squeezing in a couple of 5’s it would make the course a better test. There were no bar or food facilities open but at the lowly cost of £12 each it seems ridiculous to criticise.
Hidden Gem
On arrival in the pro shop, we were warmly welcomed and this continued throughout. Everyone was super helpful and friendly. The clubhouse has a typical local feel- breakfast butties were fabulous and definitely what was needed before play. Again, the clubhouse staff were so nice and friendly.
The golf course was in great condition - greens were great, although perhaps a little slow and it took a few holes to get the “feel”. The course has a few blind shots and some wonderful holes to navigate. In summary, a fantastic parkland course, suits all handicaps and superb value for money. The icing on the cake was the friendly atmosphere. We will be back.
Great course and very friendly staff
A nice challenging course, with a very interesting holes which is great and the course is kept in very good condition. Staff were all very friendly and very welcoming. Would recommend to anyone and I will definitely be back.
Very good value for money
Excellent condition course greens in good shape PGA professional very welcoming and helpful
Excellent
A real hidden gem. Best course I have played for the price I paid. Weather was good which made it a good challenge on the greens. Can't think of a bad hole on the course, every one a test.
Will certainly go back before the end of the season.
Course was in fantastic condition
4 of us paid £12 each to play and all 4 had a great time and loved the course. We will be back. Lady in the clubhouse was super friendly as was the girl in the pro shop.
Some nice holes
Course in really good condition and course was quiet.
Few stand out holes but best was probably the 4th which is a really challenging par 4.Got a hot deal and 48 quid for a four ball was excellent value
