Such a shame
Played today in a fourball and frankly the course should not have been open. We lost almost a dozen balls between us and only two of them were awol, the others were lost in the fairway or first cut of rough due to the horrendously wet conditions. No mention either from the starter of the 5 winter greens in play. Unfortunately with the new course layout there is nowhere near to the clubhouse to walk in which we would definitely had done if presented with the opportunity. The course was an absolute quagmire and should definitely been closed to play, as a group we were causing more damage to the course and amazingly we spotted players out in buggies absolutely destroying already sodden fairways - sadly cash appears to be priority at Westerwood and summed up by the closure of the pro shop to be replaced by a pokey starters hut. We will not be back.
Don’t waste your money
Absolutely horrendous golf course, all greens look diseased. Fairways neglected, do not waste you money booking this course, you wil just be very very well disappointed. Westerwood use to be one of the best in area with pristine greens, now it’s on par if not worse than local council courses. It’s a shame. I’ll never be back.
I understand your disappointment with the current condition of the Westerwood golf course, however the weather conditions recently have been particularly challenge for our green staff. All courses locally have suffered.. It's unfortunate to hear your comments on our greens. While I appreciate you sharing your perspective, I would encourage you to consider giving the course another try in the future. Golf course conditions can fluctuate, and it's possible the issues you encountered may be addressed in the coming months. Additionally, your feedback could be valuable for the course management, as it allows them to identify areas needing improvement. I hope you'll keep an open mind and perhaps revisit Westerwood when you have the opportunity
Course was very sodden and muddy, the play was very slow due to groups of 4 taking a while infront of me in the front 9(i was playing myself mind you). Other than that, my first time playing on the course, will be back, found it challenging and a good course!
Good value for money!
Great round, second time playing the course. Few winter greens albeit fair conditions but this didn’t upset the round. I enjoyed the variety this course offers - a few tee shots over water and some blind shots which makes a fun and challenging experience. I never used the off-course amenities besides the pro-shop but there is a nice practice area before the 1st tee. Recommended course from my experience, will be back.
Conditions are poor
Every fairway I hit I was still losing balls due to how wet the fairways are, worse course I’ve played condition wise in years.
Course layout is good with some lovely looking holes, however the conditions made it unenjoyable.
Terrible
Terrible golf course, terrible condition. No starter to regulate tee times, so there's just back log of folk waiting on tees. If you enjoy golf, don't come here.
First time playing here since covid pandemic. Front nine very poor condition greens needing attention and fairways needing work done. Back nine looks in better condition but greens are needing more work. Will play again at some point when things have improved. Very impressed with the pro shop
Poor Condition
Played this course twice in the last 9 months and I doubt I’ll be rushing to play it again.
The weather was really poor and the course probably should have been closed. A number of the greens were flooded. Weather is out with their control, but £24 to play a course you can’t putt on is poor.
General condition of the course is poor. The tee boxes are needing maintenance and the bunkers are in a terrible state. Greens in general are really poor and even removing the surface water issue, they were some of the poorest I’ve played on locally.
It’s on par or slightly below a municipal course so definitely not worth the £25-£35 for a round.
Design wise is actually good and with more TLC it could be a good challenge for any golfer.
Great layout and potential. Greens v poor and although potentially v good was alround tired
Course experience
Fairways and 1st cut, both needed cut.
Rough completely unplayable.
Greens - bare patches, need rolled, many with irritation holes, require watering.
Water features were just ponds of stagnant water.
Course has good potential, that’s why I have made these comments
Westerwood course
Was a cracking day for golf so booked a round here as had t played it before. One really good holes to be played here. Greens were pretty patchy on places but the pins were kept to the best parts of the green. Some holes had some distance to walk in between some, more so 12th-13th. However we really enjoyed the course & will boom again. Next time probably hire a buggy as the hills weren’t pleasant to us in the heat 😂
Course is a great test let down by a lack of investment.
Let’s get this right out the way first and foremost.. the greens are bad. Not just the first hole although that’s definitely the worst. All 18 need serious time and investment. The course itself though is a cracking test and has some proper golf holes. Views are great and whilst some additional signage would be helpful to navigate each hole I still enjoyed the layout.
We took a buggy which I think helps massively. There are some steep climbs and big walks between some holes.
One thing is the car park.. it’s FREE for golfers but the signs don’t say that.. it just says “Hotel Guests” so both myself and my brother paid for parking £6 each.. which is a total nonsense anyway.. just to be told in the shop that it was free for golfers. Very frustrating. Guy in the shop was very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our day. If they would only put some investment in the course it would be the best in the area in my opinion. As it is there is better value for money nearby.
No two holes the same
A very fun and interesting layout, with some great risk/reward holes, particularly on the back 9. I’d always wanted to play this course because of the design influence of Seve and it didn’t disappoint. Very clever use of water and dog legs. Also some stunning views across to the Campsie Hills. Would love to come back and play again at the height of summer.
Given the time of year, a cold and wet spring and wet conditions on the day, we probably didn’t see it at its best. A couple of the greens in particular need some attention and overall could do with some TLC to match the design. The drainage held up reasonably well under the conditions. Given the economic climate and cost of doing business I think golfers need to manage their expectations for the next few years about conditions of venues, given how expensive modern courses are to maintain.
Not a bad course
A good and enjoyable course to play. The paths around the holes are in desperate need of an upgrade. Potholes and uneven paths everywhere! But on the whole the course was good to play, if not a little sandy on the green in places.
Unloved
Well designed course which has been saomewhat neglected.
Greens need attention as do the tee boxes.
Poor course condition
Greens were extremely poor, 1st green looks like the grass is dead. They were so bumpy that trying to read a putt was pointless. I appreciate that the weather hasn’t been great but neighbouring courses are in much better condition. The change of tee box for 13 is an improvement but the tee box is in poor condition.
Staff friendly, course was not.
The standard of the course was terrible. The greens were terrible, the 13th had sand to dry it out due to it being sodden. There were winter greens on the 1st and 15th. The greens were majorly on the moss side. I’ve played here previously and it’s never been as bad. It needs a lot of work. I would recommend visiting somewhere else until they fix it.
Hi there,
Thanks for your review. I am sad to hear that you didn't have a good day. The weather, as you will no doubt be aware, has been less than kind this year. As for buggies in the fairway, all drivers are minded to keep to the buggy paths, but sadly not everyone adheres to this which in turn causes damage as you intimated.
As for returning, I sincerely hope that you give The Westerwood another opportunity to impress you as there are some very exciting plans ahead in the short to medium term.
Thanks again!
