Legendary course dismantled and ruined

This was one of our favorite golf courses to play but due to lack of interest in the surrounding community and the owners losing millions; they’ve decided to change the layout of the course and make it a 10 hole course to stop the hemorrhaging of $. They removed all the mountain holes which were the primary reasons for playing this course in our opinion. The conditions of the course are really poor. We’ve played it for the last ten years and this is by far the worst it’s ever been. It is now a private course and we had to pay more now as a 10 hole course than we did when it was a 18 hole course too. We’re deeply saddened to see the course we loved torn up and reassembled in pieces. We will not be going back. RIP Red Tail Mountain Golf Course

What a shame. I played this course multiple times on vacation in 2015 and absolutely loved it. Was just checking prices for vacation in 2019 and see it is now closed. It was a true gem.

I live 15 mins away and have played Red Tail several years. I too, was shocked and saddened to learn the course has effectively gone bankrupt. I visited it firsthand the Saturday before July 4th and NO ONE was on the course! The Pro Shop was stripped out and the pro staff gone. It costs double to play 9 holes than it did last year to play 18. And the nine holes are flat and not the same attraction as the back nine abandoned and left fallow.

Sad to see

This course was once a hidden gem. However, it has a long way to go to return to its former condition. Tee boxes are a mess and some fairways are not much better. Some traps have grass growing in them. Needs lots of TLC.

Less than expected

We had heard great things about Red Tail. We had tried to play there 3 weeks ago but got rained out. Today weather was perfect.
The course is interesting and has a variety from steep downhill/uphill holes to flat holes on the bottom of the course.
The conditions of the course were not good. The greens had small punch holes but still were pretty fast and sometimes hard to get the speed right. The tee boxes were in very rough shape. The fairways were also very rough with many areas rutted and lots of bare areas. They may have had a very wet summer impacting their ability to maintain the course. Overall a disappointing experience.

Up and Down

This is a beautiful mountain course with a lot of elevation changes. The bent grass greens roll well and the remainder of the course was in excellent condition. The dramatic elevation changes make club selection an important part of the experience. We encountered rain delay twice during the round and the third time was such that we had to quit after 17. However, it was a great experience on a challenging and lovely course. The staff could not have been more accommodating.

Beautiful mountain course with significant elevations changes (up to 260 feet)

I’m going to preface this review by saying the day we played Redtail it was cold, wet and foggy, with an emphasis on wet…

The main point in starting with that is to let you know in advance that the pictures from Redtail are not going to do it justice, the weather just was not conducive to taking great pictures. What the weather couldn’t do; however, was ruin a terrific track and despite getting very wet, we really enjoyed this course.

One of the things I liked, in retrospect, was that Redtail starts you off “easy.” The first few holes are below the mountain where you can get your swing calibrated and build a little momentum. Further, after the up and down of the mountain holes, there are a few relaxing low land holes at the end as well to ease you into the club house.

In between you’ll find some of the most scenic and interesting golf around. Winding up and down the face of the hills, elevation change becomes a staple of almost every hole beginning with the 75 foot ascent to the green on #5 and culminating with the roughly 200 foot drop on the par 4 fourteenth.

Nothing quite matches number 12 though. The hole drops about 230 feet tee to green, and around 260 from the tee box to its low point in front of the green. This may be one of the most protected greens you’ll ever see when it comes to trying to get on the deck in two (it’s a par five). The hole is located at a 90 degree angle from the end of the fairway, with a rise and forest defending against attempting to cut the corner. As if all of that isn’t enough, there’s also a small rock wall in front of the green. It’s truly a fun and unique hole.

Another thing not to miss is the old burial ground tucked away on the right hand side of the fairway as you head downhill on number 14. It's very cool, but easy to miss.

One of the least bunkered tracks I’ve played on this trip (at least the mountain stretch, there are a few more on the low-land holes), Redtail mostly relies on elevation and angles to defend itself, and it does a fairly good job of it. However, what I really liked was that, while the course design does make it tough enough that it’s hard to really “destroy” the course; at the same time, if you play smart and take what the course gives you, it’s certainly possible to post a good number.

We found the staff to be simply wonderful. In fact probably the only thing “unreasonable” about our experience was them apologizing for the weather (obviously, there’s nothing they could do about it). Since we were, by and large, the only people crazy enough to play on this particular morning, I can’t say too much about the pace of play in general. However, we went out first and I was playing alone and it still took me nearly 4 hours walking. The moral of the story is, use a cart here if you want to finish in a reasonable amount of time.

If you are a shutterbug, bring your camera as there are no shortage of vistas and views and if you are golfer, bring your whole bag, because you will have a chance to use it all. We really enjoyed Redtail and would certainly return and play (a hopefully dryer round) again.

Great Despite the Conditions

Played a round here as a foursome. It was my first time back at Red Tail in 5+ years and I was impressed with what the new ownership has been able to accomplish. Temporary clubhouse located inside the lodge area but new one is slated to be completed soon behind #1/#14 tee. You do have the option to take advantage of the restaurant in the lodge but we opted for sandwiches at the turn.

Weather was quite poor, with rain for a majority of the round and the course held up well despite the conditions. Tee boxes were in good shape (some casual water). Fairways and rough were in good shape despite not being mowed in a few days due to weather. Greens were in fantastic shape. About half of the bunkers across the course are under repair and should be completed by next season. Overall the course was in great shape.

This is definitely a course that I will be visiting again. A true mountain golf course with varying degrees of elevation changes. A short drive from Boone and you'll feel like you're all by yourself here.

Great value

I booked this round the morning I played for about a 50% discount and was very pleased. Check-in went smoothly and the staff was very courteous.

The course was in very good condition and the greens were excellent. A few of the bunkers were being worked on but that did not bother me at all. It is a very fun course with some holes in the flat land and some tricky mountain holes.

GREAT VALUE

My wife and I play lots of golf at many different courses and since we hadn't been to Mountain City since our son was a junior golfer we decided to take a leisurly trip and play Red Tail Mountain. The last time we played there I think it was called Roan Valley, but since then new ownership has made the course much better. We love the mix of mountain and lowland golf. Greens great and seldom a bad lye in the fairways. Looking forward to going back before too many leaves get on the ground. We appreciate greatly Golfnow.com for the great rates we enjoy with our membership.

great mountain and valley course!

Great course, very friendly staff. I was a single and was paired with a member Mr.B. I was glad to have some local knowledge my first time around. I drove 170 miles round trip to play and will go many more times!

Great views

Great views with elevation changes on many holes. Restaurant was not open kind of a bummer. Bunkers had sugar sand that was great being from Arizona where bunkers on most course's are a percentage of sand and dirt.

Great mountain course

RedTail development has been through a number of owners over the last decade and each has invested considerable capital in clubhouse and course improvements/beautification. The latest owners are no exception. For one who has played this course at least three times every year for the last 15+ years, it has only gotten better every year.
A major plus is the leadership of head pro Sam Adams, a former PGA champion, who exemplifies positively all that golfers could expect.
The nines have been switched, which actually improves play, although the change is to accommodate building a new pro shop near the former 10th tee.

good track in great condition...

Beautiful course that offers plenty of challenge no matter how good you are. Despite the construction both on and around the course, it still impresses with great conditions from tee to green and beautiful mountain views.

Great green side bunkers with nice sand apparently the same as augusta

They have flipped the 2 nines there and cut out some yardage on one of the holes to make room for a small pool. They are building a new club house and such. I played here twice last year and it was awful and hard, new owners are actually pumping in a lot of money now and its a big improvement now. Greens weren't that fast to me, but very playable. fairway bunkers are now ground under repair until they finally fix those in the winter. the holes on the front that are tight are almost gimmicky.

Great overall experience, but difficult from back tees

Loved the course. Excellent mountain views. Pro shop and restaurant staffs are super friendly. Course is an excellent track, but just off the fairway the rough/weeds are high. Spend a lot of time looking for balls. Greens have a LOT of slopes of course. Make sure you use their smartphone app/GPS for the tips.

Mountian suprise

This was a very enjoyable day at a real quality facility. From the tie I dropped my bag to the time I left I feltI was at a facility equal to Doral or The Diplomat or King and Bear. Th staff could not be more helpful. The clbhouse offered a very nice lunch.
Most of all , as a single, the other payers were very friendly and courtious and ncouraged me to play through.
This was a real pleasant suprise and I will play there a lot this summer.
