Tahoe Donner Golf Club
About
Located high in the Sierra among towering pines and meandering creeks, Tahoe Donner Golf Club is a scenic mountain course that is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program. The front nine of the golf course moves clockwise while the back nine moves in reverse, providing an interesting change of pace. The unique layout features narrow fairways that are lined with trees and large, undulating greens that putt true and fast. There are bunkers strategically placed throughout and a water hazard comes into play on the last hole. Dramatic elevation changes afford views of the mountainous countryside and the abundant wildlife that call Tahoe Donner Golf Club home.

Recovering
Still recovering from winter.
Greens in bad shape. Two months out at best. Fairways in decent shape. Beautiful layout
Great course!
Great beautiful course, would absolutely play again. The course itself is rather elementary. A lot of people hype this course to be extremely difficult, which most mountain courses are. People also seem to hype up the 18th hole which was also very easy. Beautiful hole don't get me wrong. I'd say the only downfall of this course, and it's not even the course or it's employees, it's the fact that they don't have Dijon mustard or bbq sauce at their snack bar. I looked at the menu and they have blue cheese dressing for one of their menu items. How are you going to have blue cheese dressing but not have bbq sauce or Dijon. Those are two staple condiments for any snack bar. If I'm going to pay 7 dollars for a dog or 10 dollars for a burger I would hope that I have the condiments I need. Next time I'll be sure to bring my own condiments.
Anniversary golf
My husband and I spent our anniversary playing here. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. The course was under some repairs, which made for some difficulties. Other than that it was a lovely day and a great time with my love.
Recovering from brutal winter
The course conditions, overall, were pretty scruffy. Both the pitching green and driving range were closed. The practice putting green is in rough condition. Large swaths of fairway are barren hard pan interlaced with grafted patches of new turf, that are struggling to take hold, due to cold AM temps. Several temporary greens(flags merely stuck in fairways) further diminish experience. On a positive note, green fees are substantially lower and you’ll have the course to yourself.
Give it a couple of weeks, and I’am sure the grounds crew will return have the course back in top shape.
Don't care about you!
This place only cares about members and tournaments. It's good course, but not in good shape.
I just like being treated as a second class citizen. Not worth it.
Experience 9/26/2019
1:50 tee time, teed off at 2:25 then played behind a 4 some which took 2:30 to play 9. Called the pro shop the man who answered forgot his name. Rude, short, stated that all tournaments okay 2:30-3 hour nine holes. Asked if their were Marshall’s on the course he said yes but we didn’t see one for 18 holes. I did see a Marshall hitting balls during my practice session. He was not helpful. Not a beverage cart, after 4 couldn’t buy a water. Overall course if nicely layed out, greens are awful, staff is not around and rude. But I played well thanks guys.
Aug 29
The course is beautiful to look at but the fairways were very wet with many tight lies. Pace of play was very slow even though it was a Wednesday afternoon. We ended up playing the front nine twice to avoid a big backlog on the tenth tee.
Great find
For the price, this a premier place to play. Greens in great shape, well maintained and great views. Mountain golf at it's best!
not what I remember
Had a season pass for this course for 15 years ending 15 years ago......some nice improvements since then like the fairway on number 9 but back then these were some of the smoothest fastest greens around,,,,.don't know if it's because of late snow or heat but they were very slow and not in great shape.....i got a bargain so was happy but had I paid over $100 I would have been real dissappointed
Tahoe Donner
This is a private course recently opened to public play. It is beautiful, challenging, narrow, and fair. No surprises or tricks. Staff was friendly and helped us off the first 15 minutes early. 3.5 hr round and great weather made it a near perfect day. But I still shot my usual two good one bad and so on. Give it a try you wont be dissapointed.
Course not fully recovered from winter?
I would think by mid June the course would be recovered from winter but perhaps I'm wrong about recovery time at this elevation. A number of areas under repair, fairway turf quality generally only fair where not under repair. Greens very firm but generally slow.
A pleasant surprise
Tahoe Donner sports the highest elevation (6,200 feet and counting) in the Lake Tahoe region. That might help your ball go a bit farther. Just make sure you hit it straight.
Tahoe Donner's narrow fairways feel like crammed high school hallways in between classes. Instead of a mass of humanity blocking your way, the stately pines and evergreens are what slow any forward progress. It's a guarantee you'll either lose a ball in the woods or get knocked down by a limb at some point.
My only minor complaint would be some serious tee imbalance. Nobody wants to play a mountain course from the too short 5,947-yard green tees and the 6,562-yard silver tees are simply too long with par 4s of 430, 426, 452 and 439 yards. New tee boxes on these holes would be greatly beneficial to pace of play and help golfers go home happy with better scores.
Don't take my mini-rant wrong. This is a great place to play, and for the money, one of the best values in Tahoe.
Fun course through the pines
Really fun mountain course. This course winds through the pine trees. Good hole to hole variability, elevation change, and intermittent views. Some tee shots are tight where others open up and allow you to get after it. Many holes have different risk/reward options. The greens are large and pretty fast. Great slightly cheaper alternative to some of the other amazing courses up here. Had a blast playing here
Great course
Excellent condition and nice layout. The greens had significant slope and I found them hard to read. Probably lost 10 strokes putting. You cannot be above the hole. Bunkers had the best sand I have seen in the area - also great condition. Great and more cost effective alternative to some of the pricier courses in the area.
