A hidden gem by Georgia's Golden Isles
Many modern golf courses suffer because they seem to have been built in willful ignorance of history. Sanctuary Golf Club (formerly Sanctuary Cove) is a rare blend of modern land-planning and classical respect for golf course craft.
The course was conceived as a real estate play at precisely the wrong time - right before the late-2000s recession - and struggled for years. Now under new ownership and benefiting from better economic times, it appears to be finally hitting its stride. Rounds are trending upward, and the design, inspired by both Donald Ross and Seth Raynor in places, is in very good shape. Still, though, the course is a relative bargain. Play it if you're hauling up or down I-95 and/or as an add-on to a trip to Sea Island or Jekyll Island. You'll love the low-key feel and considerable bang for your buck.
Played the front 9 today and was pleasantly surprised at the shaowbthe course was in. I’d heard it had gotten a lot better and it was verified today. The greens were a little slow but soft and easy to spin on. The tee boxes are in excellent shape and the fairways are good as well. Bunkers had plenty of and in them and the fringe was puttable. Overall I can’t wait to get a full round in.
Greens and fairways need work
The layout of the course is very nice, with some picturesque holes. Has a nice restaurant, but may close early afternoon based upon number of golfers on course.
Asked when making reservations condition of course and was told in excellent condition. Also saw advertisements about being in best shape in years. Sorry to say this is not so. More than half the greens were in serious need of repair with many spots that have died out. Also the greens were very slow. Fairways are thin and do not provide a good lie to hit from. I know it's winter time but with the weather conditions being moderate so far this year course should be in better shape. Have played this course in the past and definitely had better conditions previously. Not sure why recent reviews are as positive as they are? I have nothing against course or staff but was definitely disappointed. Hope conditions improve since it is such a nice layout.
Great value for the money....I play here somewhat often
My friend in North Florida and I meet up fairly often and this is the only place we meet at to play golf....that has to stand for something. It's a great deal at a soon to be private course once all the homes are built on it. I will be back in a week or so !!
This was a great layout and a good challenge. It was a little windy. Would like to see a map of the course on the score card on the tee box. The cafe was closed at 2 p.m. so no hot dog.
Greens were in fair to good, looked like winter kill in some spots. Also the fairways looked to need watering, kinda of brown in some areas.
But otherwise a nice course.
Bargain for the Money
Just a superb value, especially through Golf Now. You are not surrounded by homes, though there are some near. On most of the holes, you see only the beauty of the southern flora and fauna. Very peaceful and conducive to a good round. The course was dry and if you take divots as I do, can make shots more difficult. Great layout, interesting holes not back and forth as many courses. Some of the greens were in pretty poor shape though.
The course is in very good shape but the greens have not totally recovered from the problems they had a couple of years ago.
A gem of a course
Played week after hurricane Mathew so some clean up was underway. Course layout is interesting and fun. Not overly punitive. Greens were slow and a little spotty likely from the storm. Overall the course was in good shape. Friendly staff and fellow players on the course. This course is a gem.
Keep this course alive!!
Sanctuary cove is still a great layout, just going thru some tough times... Keep playing there until somebody buys it and brings it back to the course it was.
Very nice layout - horrible greens/bunkers
Played a quick 18 on Thu afternoon - staff very friendly and enjoyed the round - no one else on the course but me!! Tee boxes were starting to lose the grass but the greens were terrible - hardly any grass on them and the grass that was there was so thick the ball stopped like it was on Velcro when putting. Missing parts to the greens - definitely need to have the greens redone. Bunkers also lacking sand - there is enough sand in the area - put it in the bunkers!!!
Greens were still pretty bad but looks like they're getting better. Girl behind the bar and the dude in the pro shop are great. Old guy on the tractor was a completely rude a--!
don't waste your money unless you get it for 20.00 or less
course has gone down hill was a good course but no upkeep all greens are dirt have been all year no pride in course
Greens dead or awful. Some temporary greens. A disaster.
Website stated greens had gone through aerification. Should have said the course had completely lost the greens. Most were solid dirt. Quit after 9.
Poor shape. Sad to see it this way.
Hope conditions improve. I really like the overall layout.
Ok for a $30
I was expecting a very, very nice course. Although I got a cheaper rate the normal rate on GN was at $125. There is NO WAY this course comes close to that. It's a $30-45 course, at best.
The fairways were tired and often spotty. The Tees lacked a lot, too.
Now the greens were quite decent but running a bit slow.
All in all , I had a good time because of the twosome I was paired with. Very nice gentlemen and a real pleasure to talk too.
Don't dare pay full rate for this course. Leastwise, not until they bring it back up to higher standards.
Had no greens!!
Great course to play.. But when came time to putt , there were no greens to hit on. The greens were nothing but dirt..service was great and price was good.
DONT PLAY THIS COURSE/ GREENS ARE GONE
To my surprise all of the greens are gone! Not a few but ALL greens are gone.
I'm not sure what happened but would have liked to know about losing all the greens from the pro shop. Not a word and to my surprise it was all of them 1 thru 18.
The comments show a steady degradation of the greens since the start of the year. Sanctuary Cove: You responded to favorable comments in the past. How about a comment on your course conditions and when they might impove?
No Greens!! Dirt on every hole!
We played this course expecting a reasonable day of golf. When we checked in, we were not told that the greens were essentially gone! Every hole was dirt-putting only. It was extremely disappointing. The layout is nice and we would have liked to play this course with putting greens. The only reason we did not quit was because we drove several hours to play. A very disappointing day of golf. We were told by one staff member at the end of play that the greens had suffered damage from a late frost. This was difficult to believe given the fact that we played Heritage Oaks the day before which is not far from this course and found their greens to be perfect! Do not waste your money going to this course this year! it will take at least six months to a year to get their greens back.
Great layout and fun course, but greens are unplayable.
It is a shame. This has always been one of our favorites to play while on vacation at Jekyll Island, but the course is in bad shape. The grass on the greens were killed this weather due to freak weather and they have let the rest of the course go down as well. Friendly staff and nice facility, I hope they can resolve their issues, but until they do don't waste your time.
