The Most Extraordinary Golf Complex I have been to
Interestingly enough I used to be a junior member at the old Kingswood Golf Club in eastern suburban Melbourne. It was a solid course in Melbourne’s sandbelt, but it is not a patch on this merged entity which was funded by a very clever property play.
Located in Frankston (which is improving as a suburb but still will induce some giggles from locals when mentioned), upon entering the “pearly gates” you find yourself in an Australian Golfing Heaven.
I counted two practice chipping greens, an enormous driving range, seven practice putting greens, indoor coaching area, and both turf and real grass hitting areas. The practice greens are so perfectly maintained that members complained that greens should not be made out of artificial turf! There is absolutely nothing out of place, and there are frequent nice touches like wooden tee markers and stone bridges.
Quirkily most play starts on 11, which is located next to the practice range. Each hole is stunning and is a credit to the OCM redesign, who has tried to stay true to the style of the Melbourne sand belt. The south tends to be wider and slightly longer than the North course, and features huge undulating greens. Obviously it is in ones interest to be on the correct parts of the green, depending on pin placements. Using the links style slopes to get your ball close to the hole is definitely a feature of the course.
I particularly enjoyed the par 5s despite their length and difficulty - the 16th is a long par 5 requiring a drive to the left side. Only the longest hitters could get to the green in two. This is a contrast to the preceding 15th which is gettable and the slope on the right side of the green could easily feed your ball close to the hole.
The 8th is a brutal hole, with a tight landing area off the tee and a green perched uphill and surrounded by traps.
The par 3s are also stunning, and feature the sandbelt style of deep bunkering and steep run offs.
What an experience, can’t wait to play the North.

Scouting mission
Played with a friend/member.
Weather not flash but playable. Course in good nic considering the amount of rainfall they have endured over past 2 months.
