Getting Better...
I stayed away from this course for most of the season because of some bad experiences last year and poor reviews this year. I played it a couple of weeks ago and thought it was in much better shape than the reviews made it out to be. Played again today and it was even better this time.
The greens are in great shape. The are running just a touch slow, but are in pristine shape. The tee boxes and bunkers were ok too. There are a couple of fairways that look like they burned out at one point, but are on their way to recovery. Not quite as nice as say a Candler Hills or Twisted Oaks, but in much better shape than Spruce Creek.
Maybe the biggest perk is that the course isn't overbooked like some in the area. Last weekend I played Royal Oaks and it took 4.5 hours, this weekend I finished in 2.5 at Highland Hills.
That said, I do have two complaints that I hope the staff fix in the near future...
- The practice green is horrible. It's in worse shape than any fairway on the course. Shaggy and full of weeds. The good news is that its nothing like the rest of the greens... but the point of a practice green is have it be indicative of the rest of the course.
- They only have 3 tees out. For some reason they've decided not to put out the blue tees. The cards have them listed, the signs have them listed, and they are keeping up what look like the blue tee boxes, but for some reason they just don't put out the markers. Long hitters should probably stay away until they fix this over-site
Would give the course 3.5 stars if golfnow allowed it..
Great course
I had a great time playing at this golf course.
I found this course to be in great shape and a fun challenge to play.
decent layout
greens good, rough around the edges. smallish greens medium speed decent bunkers
Good layout
The teens and greens were in good shape. Fairways were a little rough but still would recommend to play. I enjoyed the layout of the course.
Great Value, very nice golf course
Highland Hills or it's former name Pine Ridge, is one of the most enjoyable and somewhat challenging courses that we've played in Citrus County. And a great value at $20 plus taxes through Golf Now, "Hot Deals" ! The course is in very good condition, the greens played a little slow, but all were consistently the same. I always enjoy playing this course.
Course in nice shape.for being in need of rain.
The course is in good shape. Greens are a little slow but are in pretty good shape. They just got done dressing the greens so should be in real good shape soon. Traps are so so. Some ok and some hard pack probably due to watering. Tees are good. On the whole the course is fun to play.
Rough Fairways
I started playing here last summer and found that with new ownership, course improvements were underway. The Greens and surrounding fringe, as well as the Tee Boxes, have received a lot of effort and work, and it shows. The fairways, however, are getting worse each time I play there. They are in the worse condition of any in the area. Hope they get some attention soon. I like the layout and the greens have really come around, but it's just too hard to hard to hit an approach iron off of grass less hard-pan.
Poor fairways
The course, now known as Highland Hills, is fairly easy to locate and looks nice from the street. Once you tee off, you can see the problems.
The fairways are shoddy. More than once my playing partners had to roll the ball for a grass lie. Preferred lies were the rule of the day.
The greens were good and the tee boxes adequate. I would not pay full price for this course and probably won't return considering the abundance of better courses in the Citrus, Hernando County area.
windy day!
Very windy that day. No-one out. The course was in great condition. The over seeding for the winter took place and was nicely done. Greens were the best they've been in years. New ownership doing good job bringing this course back !
Nice layout
Very good greens. Fairways almost all hard pan
Traps in front of greens are chsllanging ,but sand is not consistant
Under seasonal preparation
All fairways recently vertidrained....however greens already in perfect shape
first time this year
been playing here for over 15 years and it went from good to bad over the years. I was very surprised at the improvement this year. they have done a great job. The fairways still need work. Love the layout and will be back.
Good layout but...
First, this course is now called Highland Hills. I enjoyed the layout..dog legs, elevation changes. Greens were in great condition but very slow. It may be too short for some long hitters (not me). There were no blue tees out on day we played. Fairways and "rough" could use some maintenance even if only to remove debris. We were a twosome and finished in just under 3 hours. a foursome let us through and it was clear sailing after that. I would play the course again.
Better every time
The work being done on this course is definitely providing improvements. The irrigation system is being redone (easy work around on course during play) and the over seeding has really improved the greens and fringe. The carts are some of the oldest and most outdated you will use in this area, but that shouldn't be a deterrent. Great layout with some challenging hole. It's not the longest (still doesn't have the Tips as noted on the score card), but still good value for your Hot Deal $. Keep up the effort on improvements!
Getting better
The course is much improved from the last time I play there two years ago. The fairways still a little bumpy and the greens were over seeded but not bad. Will play again.
Must be the worst greens in Florida
Our Thursday group of 20 played today and the greens had to be the worst I have played in the state of Florida and I have played 79 of them. The fairways were OK, tee boxes just fair and sand traps hard, compacted, shallow sand. When putting; ball would hop and turn in every direction, no consistency at all. We all went to restaurant and there was only 1 server seen and she only showed up take order as we were leaving. There were no scorecards or pencils on the carts. I doubt we will ever return. The price was $22.00 per player.
Good back 9 greens
First time playing here. Loved the elevation changes and the overall layout. Some interesting and challenging holes throughout. The front 9 greens all had significant issues that were being treated with sand. We took some liberties trying to find a line to the hole that didn't cross Ground Under Repair on most every front 9 green. Fairways and tee boxes weren't PGA standard, but serviceable. Back 9 was a complete opposite; Tee to Green was rough, but the Greens themselves were really maintained well. Carts were ancient, score cards and Tee Box Marker listed Blue Tees for Tips (no Blue Tees on any holes) were a couple of minor talking points, but you could see maintenance teams out and about and I think they are doing the best they can to make this course serviceable and enjoyable. For the Golf Now $, not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
Nice layout, poor greens
The practice green looked no different than the surrounding chipping area, so putting practice was just not going to happen. A fellow duffer said "the greens are much better, I promise!" Well, the greens on the front nine were in bad shape, but they are being worked on, so hopefully they will improve.
I played this course 2 times before, the first time 9 holes, the 2nd time I was told after I played 9 holes that the back 9 was closed, but I could go around again on the front nine. This time I finally got to see the back nine, and it was great! The layout was fantastic and the greens were in better shape than the front nine. The front nine also has a great layout, but they added something called "foot golf" and it just makes it very crowded. There were so many holes where I would hit towards the flag only to find out it was a 'foot golf' hole.
I wish they would put some time and effort into making the tee boxes flatter. It felt like I was standing on top of a coffin lid.
Greens will be good
Right now they are working on the greens, but they are big, rolling and challenging.
