Down royal
Cold frosty morning hard to see your ball because of the low sun. But a very enjoyable course and day out.
Great value
Great course and great value, can’t fault it kept well. Staff very friendly and helpful. Came last week for the valley course and returned to try the park course and wasnt disappointed.
Okay
Can't expect much from a cheap course, but for £25 it wasn't good value. £15 a round would make more sense. Fairways are poorly kept and the greens are crazily slow. Beautiful setting and with better maintenance would be a real gem. We were also stuck behind a competition which is normally fine, but they weren't abiding by their own slow play rules. 7-8 minutes looking for a ball is a bit much.
Good value
I have read a lot of negative reviews of this course so felt I would add my own. I have played this course many many times.
The bad reviews are all about the condition of the course. The points mentioned are relevant but a little harsh. You have to remember what you are paying to play. If you double the price then the value is poor, but on average you pay between £10-13 a round. This has to be considered.
The course simply needs cut. The fairways are a little long, but nothing silly. Again, same with the greens. They are slow as a result. Once you accept this then your expectations should get in line with what you pay to play it.
A huge positive of this course is how dry it is when other much more expensive courses are soaked, or even closed. The holes are nice and varied and the it is a fair test of your skills. It's fairly open and the greens do not have a lot of break - so it is a great course to build your confidence for a round or 2. It annoys the heck out of me when people pay a tenner to play and expect the quality of a course 3 times as much.
It's a good course
The course is great apart from the up keep the fairways they are very rough and in bad condition the whole course could need a bit of attention
Underrated
Played here a few times and always found it to be in decent nick. Never seems to be too waterlogged considering it hasn't stopped raining this summer! Have paid more and had less enjoyable rounds. Quite an open course but fairly long with some challenging holes.
A good day out
We found the course dry after all the rain, fairways were well defined and the greens lush and true if a little slower then what we were used to .We had a nice meal and a drink on finishing and that concluded a good day out.
it overall is good value for money with nice attentive staff and I could recommend it.
Value for money
Great course for a bit of practice. Fairways aren't kept the best and greens not the best either, but at £10 for a round cant complain
Wet
Play this course often and normally good in wet as it drains normally well. Not today, green were in bad state, fairways hadn't been mowed in a while some of tee boxes over grown.
Usually great, but badly maintained
Down Royal was a course I played 6-8 times a year but I haven’t been since before Covid and the degradation is crazy. The course is great, but on Sunday the greens were at fairway length and some of the fairways were like roughs. Some of the putts were genuinely unmakable because of the length of the grass. Such a shame.
Hairy fairways
There's been a lot of heavy rain recently and quite a few local courses are very wet underfoot. Down Royal is usually a good choice when the weather has been bad as it's a heathland type course with good drainage. Not today however, the fairways have obviously not been mowed for a while and were very hairy especially on the front 9. There was absolutely no run on the ball and sometimes the ball was even hard to find despite being right in the middle of the fairway. The 1st cut was easily 4+" long so despite the underlying good drainage the course behaved as it would have if it was very wet.
Overall a bit disappointing.....I expected better.
Fields
Lovley staff course is so bad greens the length of the fairways rough the. So long holes not cut right no green keeper to keep maintain of course
Much improved
Not sure what other reviewers expect for 10 quid.
Definitely a course to play April- September but in good condition ( no issue with the fairways) and some really interesting holes.
Could do with more signage though but will be back
Terrible Fairways and Rough
Paid £10 and thought it was great value but then as I started playing I noticed why it was only £10. The fairway would be considered 1st or 2nd cut on a good course and impossible to determine where the fairway and rough are separated from tee box. I’m a decent golf and lost 3/4 balls that were straight down the fairway due to the length of the grass. Greens are slow but to be fair are in good condition.
Would not recommend. Maybe if it was £5.
I like this course but guys it seriously needs markers on the fairways. It's standard practice.
Nobody on reception at all waited for 5mins and still no one so just grabbed 2 cards and walked onto the course. 2 people teeing off at the time we had booked. Followed them around and both men were taking 2 balls
Off the tea and playing both balls the whole way around the first 9 holes. We Gave up after the front 9.
Really bad condition. Couldn’t tell the difference between fairway and rough. Greens were shocking with so much sand that would change the direction of the ball really easily. Won’t be back
Dry, no mats
A dry underfoot course, thankfully no mats required. Greens are very heavily sanded.....completely impossible to putt on, youd be better using a seven iron.
Useful driving range facility to warm up.
Long course with wide fairways, easy to play if you are a big hitter.
Course ok but a bit untidy with un replaced divots everywhere ( that could be down to the birds?) Reasonable value for money but better courses nearby for similar greenfee eg. Lurgan, edenmore, alberdelgy. Having said all that, I enjoyed the outing
