A day at Blackwood Mahee
In general we were very happy with our day. Let down however by the lady in reception who informed us that we could not participate in the Open Competition as we bought our round with GolfNow!! Generously offered to let us play if we paid another £20 each - bit of a shambles so we declined obviously!!
Good course, long walk and hilly but nice views, great course condition, good greens and a good challenge.
Challenging
The course was OK for the £20 we paid, the only thing I would say is there needs to be more signs around the course directing you to the next tee box for 1st time players of the course. Otherwise value for money..
Always in great condition
As always in great condition always finish a round here wanting to come back immediately!
Front 9 superb
Probably picked the wrong day with extreme heat and cleggs feeding on me all day, course was challenging and front 9, now the back 9 strangely was immaculate, all in all pretty fair but tough course, pro was a gentleman.
This course was in great condition
This was an almost ideal round. The course was well manicured (apart from bunkers), the fairways were firm benefitting from a spell of dry weather and we completed the eighteen holes in about three and a half hours.
Where is the next hole?
Course in superb condition. Greens are quite slow. When you complete a hole you really have no idea where the next hole is? A small investment in signage would make a big difference. Good value for money.
Smashing value for money!
Just on the outskirts of Belfast and well worth the money, would be £70 a round if situated in the city.
Great for beginners and great players alike.
Can't wait to get back.
Great Members
First time playing, ready to T off 1st hole and a Gentleman called Bill who is a member kindly offered to play a 3 ball with us and show us around the course what a gentleman very welcoming best course ive played at so far. Made a great contact and will def be back again.
1st time at the Blackwood
Really enjoyed this course a bit mucky in places and greens quite slow but expected in winter, held up a bit on the front 9 but opened up on the back, would love to get back out in summer
Overbooked
We booked a two ball but on arrival was paired with another pair of strangers. Halfway round one of the strangers informed us that his 2 daughters have COVID-19, which forced me and my brother to walk off the course. We considered the pairing with strangers unexceptable amid the pandemic
Slow play
Started our round at 2.30 didn't finish until 18.45, where we just about made it back with light. Never mind the people behind us and people before them. Course management very poor worst I've seen. Turned up and there was cars parked on grass verges so straight away we knew it was too many people. At every tee box from the second through to 18 we where having to wait on people teeing of before us. There was just far to many people on the course. Then around the 10th hole a 4 ball asked could they play through as they where playing a cup match! On a Sunday while its open to public? To me it's the type of club that will ram its course with no care for the amount of golfers on it and the pace the game is getting played at. Fill the course and take their money in my opinion, and leave them to deal with it.
Brilliant course.
First time playing the bigger course at Blackwood and absolutely loved it.
Fun & Challenging Course (However be careful of the pricing)
I've played Blackwood at least half a dozen times, and used their practice facilities as well. The par 3 course is a fun way to practice your low iron to wedge game. The Hamilton course (the big course) has a combination of challenging holes and forgiving holes. You have to certainly pick your battles which I see as the definition of a good course lay out.
The reason for this review is more for the GolfNow prices.... I have found great deals in the past for other courses, but I'm not sure what happened with Blackwood...... When I play with a member the cost is 15 pounds, and when I call the pro shop to book directly (without a member) i pay 25 pounds. The "HOT DEALS" on GolfNow is 27 pounds and the regular price is over 30 pounds! Hopefully these prices will be amended, until then make sure you book directly with the pro shop.
