Not worth coming back
We played this course a year ago. We fish every year in Lake Conroe but also play local courses. What a difference a year makes. Once again horrible greens. (Last year they said it was the freeze) absolutely no maintenance on the course and it’s a Thursday. Couldn’t hear a trimmer or mower anywhere on the course. Rough is too penal but it’s understandable when the maintenance crew is at the maintenance shed / building all day. This place needs someone to return it back to some glory it once had. It’s not going to happen sitting in the maintenance shed.
Seems the course is now run by local college students which I guess is ok. But the fry cook couldn’t handle more than one order at a time. Took 30 mins for a hot dog and draft.
Carts are nice and clean.
Putting green is a chipping green. Mostly sand.
Back the course…rough off the cart paths is 1-2 feet tall and thick. Group in front kept losing their balls which made pace of play very slow. CUT the rough. I saw plenty of tractor mowers capable of mowing this in the maintenance yard.
I feel sorry for the local college that has to have its name / mascot associated with this course. All it takes is someone willing to work and get this course back in shape. Do it one hole at a time!
Challenging Course
Depending on what Tee's you play from, this course can be very challenging. Sloping & tight greens with great roll, some long par 4 holes (especially from the black/blue tees), & plenty of opportunities to take a penalty. You can find bunkers on most every hole, water hazards & jungle like grass that borders most of the holes. The fairways and greens are in great shape!
Fun Course!
Had a chance to play this course on a weekday morning and had a great experience. The staff was friendly and the course was in good shape. We have had lots of rain the past week and there were some spots that were still pretty wet. To be expected! Course has a nice range and food/beverage options. I'd like to play Raven Nest again in the future.
Seen better days
Texas has had a dry winter but the tee boxes looked barren. Minimal grass and mostly dirt contrasted with the last time I had played here years ago. The greens are also battling infiltration by Poa annua, making putting difficult. The final problem came when arrogant college-aged jerks jumped ahead of us and then would take 3 practice swings before topping the ball on each stroke! That slowed our pace to a crawl. I’ve never seen a marshall on the course so you get what you pay for.
Hidden Value
I was delighted to discover this is a challenging but fair gem. There is a good variety of holes that require a variety of clubs through the course. Shot making and power were both necessary to play well. I am eager to go back!
Great golf course
I played this course for the first time and enjoyed OT very much. The fairways had a lot of undulations. The fairways and greens were in good shape. The rough was thick Bermuda. Tough to hit out of but not impossible. The greens were pretty fast but not too hard. It was a definitely a good value. I will play again when I'm in the area.
Great course-- Great price!
Having driven by this course hundreds of times, I finally played. And, I'll be back . Purchase the yardage book for $3 if it's your first time. Not tricked out, but can be challenging.
Sam Houston's Colt I/45 between Dallas and Houston
Undulating greens, fairways not too wide or too narrow. A couple of challenging tee off holes across water. Rough areas will get ya. Approach shots can be a challenge due to undulations. When your on the green, they can be quick depending on what time of day you are playing. Immaculate for the price in comparison to Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston courses. Great business course, father and son, socializing with friends, or just enjoying the landscape during single play. You will be back!
