The stronger of the Two courses
Beacon Hills the Hills is the stronger of the two courses. This is a full 18 hole layout as opposed to the 9 hole layout on the Lakes.
This is another hilly and winding layout. Position on the fairway is definitely at a premium, hitting to the high side of the fairways is definitely what you want to plan for.
I quite like the long par 5 tenth. Tee off into a fairway valley scattered with kangaroos (I also once hit a poor wombat here as he crossed the fairway). And hit your approach up the hill to a firm green.
The third is also a nice par five dogleg left that slopes to the left with a downhill approach to a small green.
The Hills seems to be better maintained than the Lakes, I prefer this course to the Lakes. Both good fun though.
A nice walk in the country
Beacon Hills is a lovely country course in the hilly outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne about 1 hour from the city.
The Lakes layout twists it’s way up and down through the native eucalyptus forest. It is very hilly so bring your walking shoes! The fairways are tight so it’s necessary to be careful off the tee - not all holes require a driver, so that helps.
I played in the depths of winter so some parts of the fairways were muddy. The greens are soft, highly sloped yet true. I quite like the fourth hole, a short dogleg left with water left requires a driving iron/three wood and a solid approach to a sloped green carved into the bottom of a hill.
Semi private course - they serve some mean potato cakes in the canteen!
Warmup Nets and nice putting green available for practice. Nicely appointed pro shop.
Plenty of friendly grey kangaroos about too.
