Tough Course

TPC Course of old. In its hay day was awesome but now more in line with a tough muni. A difficult track with super fast greens. The GPS system sucks due to cart deactivation causing cart to have to be pushed on a few occasions. Deactivation area required long walks to ball which resulted in a 5 hour round. Round was way too long, and was experienced by even the groups ahead. Not sure I would play again but if so bring your B+ game as this course is tough and always windy!

GREAT LAYOUT

I certainly hope that the management company for this golf course spends some money to keep conditions in decent shape. If Heron Bay is any indication I will be deeply saddened because Eagle Trace is a true classic. Back when I was a member at this course I had a great memory late one afternoon as I walked over a berm between 15 and 16 and walking down 16 was Seve B, Jack N. and Lee T. taking in a practice round before the tournament started.
People at the course are very friendly.

Don’t play if there’s a tournament

I was excited to play what looked like a good course, except when I got there I was rushed out to the tee 15 minutes ahead of my tee time because of the tournament that was booked. I didn’t know about this tournament of course. Maybe Golf Now could help provide that info. When the starter tried to convince me that the course might be too tough from the blue tees and that I should play from the whites, I thought it was odd. We played from the blue but found that each of the tee box tents were set up right on the boxes and many of them were in the way or right on the blue tee boxes. Maybe the starter knew this. Our entire group was angry about this. When we asked them to move they did but not the tents. In some cases, we hit over the tents. Really this is about how badly mismanaged the course is. When the cart girl came around and we wanted something to eat/drink she said it was only for the tournament. Not one time did we see any course official on the course. We all left angry especially after playing the last three holes in an hour and fifteen minutes. This course is obviously struggling to grab every dollar it can. By the way, when I complained I did not ask for a refund and of course I was not offered one.

Eagle Trace is good, dealing with escaping the TPC shadow

This is a course that I have longed to play for personal reasons. I attended my first PGA Tournament here in 1987, at the Honda Classic.

Eagle Trace has seen a lot of changes since then. The PGA Tour obviously moved on, as did the TPC branding, as the course left that stable last year when confronted with a costly irrigation mandate.

Still, this is a solid South Florida course. You are eased in with some fairly easy holes. Come the par-4 fourth hole, however, the intensity is turned up. This was my second favorite hole on the course because of the design. It is a cape hole that requires a roughly 200-yard carry from the tee to clear the large waste bunker that borders the canal. The landing area appears small, though, thanks to two bunkers that frame the fairway on the far side. Provided you find the fairway, the remaining shot requires no more than a wedge, but an extremely small green awaits. The club has filled in a bunker short and right and made it a grass bunker, but the target zone is claustrophobic.

The par-5 fifth is memorable for the risk/reward second shot to a green that is shallow, but nearly 50 yards wide.

The par 3s all require carries. The par 5s are gettable. But when the wind rears it’s head, this is a tough golf course to score on.

My favorite hole was the short par-4 16th hole, which looks benign from the tee, with a split level fairway that narrows the farther you choose to take it up. The second shot is to a peninsula green, with water long and right. Two pot bunkers guard the bailout left.

The par-4 18th plays longer than the yardage to a most unique ampitheater. The stadium seating mounding behind and to the left create a postcard approach to a green with the colonial-style clubhouse looming behind.

There is a lot of wildlife on the course. I encountered an owl in the bunker fronting the 18th green that had burrowed into the trap.

I didn’t find the conditioning to be that lacking. I think if you played the course under the TPC banner and play it now, it is not going to measure up for obvious reasons. The bunkers were a little tough around the edges and there was some creeping grass into the Bermuda greens that really affected putts, but overall the conditioning was fine.

My only complaint echoes what I had read on previous reviews: slow play is a REAL issue here. My tee time was 2:05 pm and they were running nearly 20 minutes behind. The round took nearly five hours. To the club’s credit, the scorecard prominently addresses slow play, and the cart’s GPS sent numerous reminders about avoiding slow play. Yet, the course could really benefit from an on-course marshal.

Practice area were great. Starter was great. Twilight rate is well-worth it.

Tip: Ask the pro shop attendant for a course guide/yardage book. They have some of these behind the counter with the old TPC branding. Also, if you have a range finder, shoot the pins and don’t rely solely on the cart GPS. I remember four holes where the GPS said the hole was cut one place, when it was actually on the opposite end of a green.

Whatever

The course is in fair shape. Luckily it’s a very beautiful course to begin with but extremely difficult. But the pace of play was ridiculously slow. I understand it’s a Saturday but teeing off 45 minutes late and taking five hours to play is unacceptable.

Great course-under staffed

I booked a 851 tee time - at a nice course or any course for that matter-tee times ensure timely play etc. well they “over booked “ by 5 or more 4 somes. We didn’t get out til after 930.

On the well laid out course there were no course Marshall’s and a 4 hour round turned into a 5 hour round thanks to slow play.

No one to clean clubs post round and didn’t see a bar or lounge for a 19th hole drink.

Overall nice course -over priced for total condition and lack of staff.

Good Round

Great round early tee time and fast play. Course is finally starting to come around. A result of finally having some maintenance visible during the round. Greens have some rough spots but overall were very quick even early in the morning. However they did hold OK on long approach shots.

Eagle Trace

I must say post the tour leaving this venue—it has fallen behind a tad. The pro and staff are very friendly. The restaurant staffer was a dud. I wouldn’t allow her to sell ice water. Let me add—the course needs a serious injection of capital on the bunkers and grass growth.

An old course living off its laurels

The course was not at the level you would expect from a course with this pedigree. Staff you need to raise it up a notch. Time to make a difference.

REALLY GOOD COURSE

My group played Eagle Trace 2 years ago. We travel to Florida each March. I think that they have reduced their greens fees since then and it really is a good value. Overall course conditions were excellent. I do have two complaints. The GPS on my cart wasn't working and at the turn, I asked for help in getting it restored. The starter messed with it but it didn't work for the rest of the round. My riding partner and I had to rely on the other cart in our group to get yardages. The other complaint was that it took 4 3/4 hours to complete the round because the pace of play was so slow. I don't think that many courses have marshals to ensure that a reasonable pace of play is maintained. I suppose that they don't want to alienate anyone. The others in my group kept playing, but my brain was fried because of the slow play.

Beautiful Layout, the course needs some love though

Perfect layout, but bunkers with no rakes and rocks + weeds, fairways brown and down on water. Cart was pretty low quality, hard to turn and wheels bowed out. Just a little bit more money than I'd like to pay for those conditions, greens were good though. Fun course but won't be back until I've heard about some maintenance upgrades.
