Good local course, needs a little TLC, but I still enjoy playing it
Getting there...
Course is getting better. Yes there was a lot of drama with the ownership and who to blame for the shut-down and deteriorating conditions. But they have been back open for a couple months now, and each time I play the greens look a little better. Still lots of weeds and rough patches, but hoping come spring-time they will be halfway decent. Fairways and tee boxes are ok, but they are improving as well. For now, the course is playable, but conditions still have a long ways to go. However, I really have confidence that the course will continue to improve. Also, Paul (the new clubhouse pro), is a super nice guy.
Poor course, worse ownership
Oh where do I even start. This course hasn't had competent leadership/ownership since about 2011. Soap operas have been written about less scandalous stories than the management of this place. The greens were actually green sometime circa 2013. They have been bare ground ever since. The greens would actually be better if they were just sand. It's that bad. Never have I seen a course that was actually open in this bad of shape. "WildWeed" would be a drastic improvement, as that would imply that green plant matter is actually present on the property.
Last year, the current ownership sold the pro shop, locker rooms, and restaurant to the Seineyard. The current pro shop is a trailer with a structurally deficient half-finished deck that backs up to the pond. The practice range was demolished to build a RV park. The practice green behind the old pro shop has fallen into the same disrepair as the rest of the course.
In spite of all the issues we, the regular players, had a glimmer of hope in 2016 when two very nice people agreed to lease the course and begin making much needed improvements. I use the term improvements loosely, as they were merely attempting to get it back to a playable state.
Unfortunately, it became clear the situation they walked into when, not only, the fuel tanks were dry(and on a COD basis with the vendor), the electricity was about to be cut off, and the lease on the carts was severely delinquent, but also, the main well pump for irrigation was irreparably damaged.
Over the the winter 2017, they achieved positive growth of the Bermuda greens, which is quite a feat considering it goes dormant. Things were looking up. The course was improving by leaps and bounds. Tee boxes were rebuilt, the yardage markers were re-calibrated, and players were appreciating the attention being paid to the course. Unfortunately, this progress wasn't to last. Construction of the RV park on the former practice range began to have severe consequences on the condition of the course. Twice in March 2017, the construction work rendered the irrigation system of the course inoperable. The water lines had been cut as well as the power. Irrigation was restored by the course personnel, much to the chagrin of the ownership, who repeatedly sent threatening text messages to the greens keeper over the course of a few days. The water had been cut again within a week.
In an affront to common sense, the ownership claims that there is no need to water the course in early spring, which is THE growing season for bermuda grass. It's obvious the ownership meant to undermine the efforts of the course management by any means necessary, purely on the grounds of ego.
Who wants to admit failure when your lessee is doing a better job?
To the detriment of every golfer in wakulla county, this insanity has continued, and, as a result, we have decided to send our dollars outside the county, either to Saint James Bay in carabelle, or to any number of courses in Tallahassee that care about their players.
It's a sad, sad state of affairs, but for Wakulla county golfers, it is a fact of life.
OVERPRICED
New owners raised the green fees to $24.99 as of 1/1/2017. Price was $19.99 prior, but even that was too much. Greens are non-existent (sandy, bumpy, patches of weeds), and they have been that way for over a year, so I do not see any reason why they would improve. Fairways and tee boxes are nothing to speak of either. Spend the gas money to go somewhere else. New owners also tried to prevent us from using the WCTV certificates that we had purchased. Wildwood is in a good location and has lots of potential. I understand golf courses take a lot of money and upkeep, especially one such as this that was closed for so long. But it has been re-opened long enough, and I have seen no improvement. Recently they had the back 9 closed, went back after it reopened and it looked the exact same. No marshals, groups of 4 and 5 and women playing which really slow it down, no regard for other players. I love Wildwood Golf Course but there needs to be a lot of changes before I will spend my money here. $10 course at best.
Not bad for the money
Course isn't bad for the money. The greens and tee boxes a very patchy right now so good luck making most putts. There were too many groups of five or more so pace of play was bad.
Possibilities
Sure glad I signed up through GolfNow and paid a reduced fee. The course has little grass on the fairways and greens. The layout is good and with a lot of attention, a lot more people will want to play it.
Fun time on a course about 40 minutes from Tallahassee
First time playing here and I would definitely make the 40 minute drive from Tallahassee to play here again.
I would say this course is about 2.5/3 stars out of 5. This is nowhere near the 5 stars that the below reviewers are all pushing. Seems suspicious and kind of like the course if pushing people to give fake 5 star ratings, but with that said, this course is in much better condition that I thought it would be and from what it was a few years ago. The practice putting green is currently closed.
The greens are getting better, but most have sand throughout and they are not generally great. They are getting closer to being amazing, but I would say they are still a few months from that.
Fairways were in decent condition, but you can tell winter grass for sure. Tee boxes were about average.
This course is not that long, doesn't have much water at all, and overall is a great fun course to play. I really enjoyed myself on this course and would play again. I didn't see any cart girl and there were some small bathrooms on the course (that need to be upgraded).
I heard this place has new owners and they are genuinely trying to make it better. I must say they are doing a good job and I am looking forward to seeing how it will be in the future.
just keeps getting better
Excellent layout and very playable. The new owners and their entire staff have been working tirelessly to get the greens back and they are very close. These guys are first class and they just opened a top notch seafood restaurant for great dining options. Great value and I can't wait until next time.
outstanding course
amazing transformation in less than a year....highly recommend since it is on the upswing to only getting better each day
On the rise course...check it out!
This course has come a long way over the past year! Cannot wait to see conditions when the season is in full swing this spring...right now it plays well considering the greens are in the dormant winter stage but so are all the other courses in north Florida at this time. Highly recommend golfing here!
Wildwood Golf
Being a local and playing this course often, it is hard not to be excited about the transformation this course is taking. Is the course in great shape? Not yet. Are the owners and staff dedicated to make this course great? Without a doubt. You can go out there on the weekend and see the owner on a tractor doing something to help this course along. The rates they have right now to help draw in golfers is incredible. I cant wait to see how awesome this course is going to be in the spring. Jeff R.
Enjoy this course ar least two times a week!
We have the option to play a PGA rated course but choose Wildwood. The new owners are bringing this course back to its glory! The ongoing structure of the course improves monthly and it's a great course for all. Prices are reasonable and the employees and owners do see to your every need. We return on a weekly basis and will continue to do so.
This course has come a long way!
This course was literally resurrected from the weeds only a year ago. It has come so far, so fast - all due to the efforts of the owners, David & Susan McQuary. They have poured countless hours and money into this course to give the people of Wakulla county, Florida a nice local place to play golf. They are extremely friendly and always provide excellent service. The fairways are coming along nicely and the greens are finally taking hold. This couple and this area deserves a lot of credit for rescuing this course and giving us a place for a great round of golf!
Excellent Value and Beautiful Scenery
What a treasure for Wakulla County--part of the Nature Coast of Florida! The course has a beautiful layout and the staff is friendly and engaging. Look for more good things in the months ahead from this course!
Friendly fun course.
Each time I am at the forgotten coast I enjoy Wildwood Golf Course more.
This golf course has the warmest, friendliest owners of any I have played. The course is well laid out with challenging holes to make your round of golf lots of fun.
The natural beauty and wildlife is breathtaking. Early mornings with the sun rising and the dew on this beautiful course is such a peaceful pleasure.
Coming back after being closed more than a year
Not many other options in the area so they are not cheap. Greens have recent repairs and were sanded in many places. Fairways need another full season and a lot of water to fill back in. I heard the Seinyard people were opening the restaurant by the first of the year. That would be a vast improvement as there is NO food/beverage service now yet they insist on charging $34. Southwood in Tally is not that expensive off season and is much more challenging and in much better shape.
nice course, terrible greens.
I really want to like this course. I've played here since they re-opened in Oct. of 2014,when they just redid the greens. They are worse now than they were then. There is no reading putts from outside of 3-4 feet, just try to get close and pray.
Play it now. The golf course improves everyday. Not fair to the golf course to be reviewed after newly grown in after the course was destroyed by round up. Now, one year later, most reasonable golfers are very impressed with the progress.
Greens were horrible
Ive been trying to give this course the benifit of the doubt due to the fact that it is under new ownership but I cant continue to do so. For the right price you could use this course as practice but at the rates they are charging its just not worth it. The greens are not useable. No point in even trying to putt so you are limited to practicing your drives and fairway shots. Unfortunately there are many areas were the fairways do not have grass either. No practice greens makes this a no go for me.
The new superintendent started last week. He punched the greens and top dressed last week. The greens should be much improved in no time. We are finally getting some rain at the course so the fairways should fill in too.
Wildwood is offering special Winter Rates now: $19.95 + tax for 18 holes and a cart. You will definitely get your money's worth! They also have fun games you can join if you don't have your own group. The Saturday Scramble tees off at 10:00 and is a great time. M/W/F the Points Group plays at 10:00.
