Ron Jaworski's RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club
About
Ron Jaworski’s Riverwinds Golf & Tennis Club is situated along a scenic stretch of grassland between the banks of the Woodbury Creek and the deep harbor marina on the Delaware River. Its location gives it the feel of traditional seaside links courses found in Scotland and Ireland, which is further enforced by the sod-wall bunkers that lurk near the greens. The layout features plenty of water and incorporates the surrounding wetlands as well. One unique feature of the golf course is that the routing winds across a mile-long twisting burn, creating a visually interesting setting. Riverwinds begins with a gentle, mostly flat front nine but the mounding becomes more aggressive as you move onto the back. All of the holes face a different direction, which means you’ll most likely be using all the clubs in your bag to tackle the crosswinds and rugged terrain.

Awesome Weather Day for Golf
Beautiful day, course was a little wet, Cart paths only, which amounted to a 5 hour round. But not bad for February in Philly!!!
Jaws made a nice course even better!
last minute tee time on golf now. they had a frost delay, but not too bad. the starter, Jim, is a nice guy, really nice, but was a bit overwhelmed. He would tell guys they were next, then forget who we was talking to, and tell another group they were next. The logistics are a bit tough as the first tee is about 600 yards from the pro shop. There is also no practice range there, just a warm-up net. The course, which is the most important thing, is nice. it is a wide open layout, so high handicappers will like, but better players will like it too as you can play from the blues at 6800 or the black tees at more than 7000. Nice mix of par threes, and some nice views of downtown Philly skyline. It is about 20 minutes from Philly airport. It was a nice experience and I would play it again, BUT what really made my day was meeting Ron Jaworski, former Philadelphia Eagles QB. He owns the course and sometimes comes out and greets groups. He was great, talked to everyone, took photos, etc., was just a really nice guy. What a nice touch. Thanks Jaws!
Character gone
I always liked the course layout and holes. There is variety and nothing repeated and many of the holes are a challenge. On this visit however all of the (protected?) wetlands areas were cut down and opened up. I want to say it was seasonal for the winter but it didn't look that way. I get that some of it makes the course more playable and may speed pace of play but I'm not buying it and I think they went too far. What I saw took away from the character and some of the challenges. Areas that formerly were hazardous are now wide open and cut down and they let you go into them and play out of them. Also the white tees were a stiff 6600 yards and the next option was 5600 yard gold tees. In my opinion there needs to be more of a middle ground. That is a lot of golf course and most men won't swallow their pride and move up to the much shorter course to make it more playable and enjoyable. I say that from experience of playing and also working part time at a local golf course a couple days a week near where I live.
LOVE THIS LAYOUT
Walked the course on a mild November day and played with some really good guys who was a father and his 2 sons. Course was fantastic with everything in real good condition, almost no leaves and the greens were running true. played this course about 10 years ago and forgot what a gem it was. will get back more often when in the area
Location is great. Right across from the Philadelphia airport and Delaware river
Played while there was not that many people on the corse because of the weather. The course was in great shape for it to be in November. Hope to play it again soon.
Great shape
Course was in great shape. There were a few wet spots due rain day before but not bad. Greens were fast but once you adjusted they were true. Nice layout. Due to the time we played there was no place to get drinks or snacks at the turn. Would go back.
Unexpected
Folks, I have very low expectations for Jaworski courses...this one blew me away. A great layout, well maintained. One of the best public tracks I have ever played.
I think the comment of low expectations for Jaworski courses was unfair. I would say River Winds, Running Deer and Blue Heron Pines are all excellent courses in New Jersey with Ramblewood being so-so and Valleybrook uninspiring. Downingtown in PA is also a nice challenging course and Jaworski golf has made improvements to all to make them playable.
Riverwinds
Challenging layout, especially In windy conditions, which is what we played in, you will use every club in your bag, and the greens are absolutely the best we putted on in years. Fast and very true! My favorite! Lol. Do yourself a favor and try this course when you get a chance,
No wind at Riverwinds
Amazingly, it was a calm day and there was no wind. Played on a Sunday when the Eagles were playing and had the course to myself. The greens were fast and the rough was difficult to find your ball. Fairways were recently aerated and plugs were lying everywhere.
Mandatory 1 star deduction for no driving range. Yes they have a practice net at the clubhouse, but it's hard to get a feel of ball flight hitting into a net. Very noisy with planes from PHL taking off every 30 seconds.
Links course
Wide open links course. Undulating fairways and greens, big greens right on water and big wind. I'm not a fan of island hole right in the Delaware River, too gimmicky.
Really challenging yet enjoyable round.
PACE OF PLAY(Played 9 paid for 18)
Tee time yesterday 2:18PM.. Finished 9 holes at 5:30PM and had to just leave. The starter came up to us on hole 5 (at 4PM) and told us 5 and 6 are our "backup holes" and it'll open up after. We said okay nicely. Then we proceeded to wait 15minutes at every tee box on 6, 7, 8, and 9. I was expecting a crowded possibly 5hr round(beautiful labor day) but a 3+ hour front 9 with no urgency from any of the workers will have me not come back here if I don't get any of the first 5 tee times of the day.
Amazing Course
I got paired up with a couple members who were super friendly. The course was in fantastic conditions. The layout was unique and offered a challenege from the Blue tees. I will definitely be playing this course again soon.
Great course - r e a l l y s l o w. !!!
Great design
Good shape
Friendly staff
Painfully slow !!!!!
A public course wanting to position itself as a country club for a day , will never get there with a pace of play that that has you waiting on every shot
Sorry !
I think that the reason for slow play boils down to players who don't know how to manage the cart path / fairway /must walk area. I've seen players walk to their shot, look, walk all the way back to get a club. It's a lot of course for high hcp'rs who aren't mindful that they clog up the entire course behind them if not playing actively 'ready' golf.
Nice track but played slow
The course was in nice shape, greens were pretty fast and true. There was only one green that had some damage on it, the rest were great. We got there and were told about a pace of play of 4:08 and it ended up playing over 5 hours. Ranger was seen only once on the front nine and got the groups moving a little on the back but damage was done and he had too much course to worry about as the only ranger so he couldn't stay on top of them. I would play again...
The Thought Gives Me The Winds
"Ron Jaworski's" RiverWInds turned out to be an enjoyable course, although the 2nd cut was really high and incredibly unforgiving for a decent golfer playing it for the first time.
I was treating some customers, and having to rent clubs for them, I was embarrassed at their rentals. Shame on them (Jaws!) for charging full rental rates for what looked like the lost and found bucket was pilfered. No less than three manufacturers and no continuity between clubs. The driving range? Four mats and a net. I'd have given it 4 stars (3.5 if it was an option), but 3 stars due to the silly aforementioned items.
If I were playing by myself, it would have been fine, but not for customer golf.
So, bring your sticks and have already warmed up somehow. Otherwise, it'll be like going to Subway and expecting the sandwiches to look like the commercials.
Nice course !
Good layout....great pace of play ...rangers visible...
Great food in the main restaurant !!
Totally agree on all your points. Played there for years & yes, the 6,500 white tee distance IS too much for a half the folks that play there (esp if the wind blows hard!). But the course design gives you no other options than to drop down to the senior tees, & very few guys will pay $80 to play from them. That surely contributes to the pace-of-play issue. I wasn't aware you can enter & play in the former-restricted areas. That's unnecessary; it does take away some of the "links" character of the course & will further slow down play. Overall, it is a good course, but the price increases in recent years have relegated it to my "hot deal on golf now 1-2X a season" list.
