Eagle Springs Golf Course
About
Eagle Springs Golf Course (formerly known as DeFuniak Springs Country Club) is Walton County's oldest course and one of the panhandle area's most challenging. The golf course sprawls across rolling hills covered with pine forests and five spring-fed lakes, both of which come into play throughout the course. Sandy scrub brush and colorful flowering bushes accent the landscape even further. The towering trees lining the tight fairways are just some of the many challenging natural hazards. There are also 23 strategically placed sand traps throughout. The small, elevated greens are pitched and undulated in such a manner that would make even the best putters nervous. The rolling elevations also provide picturesque views from nearly every point on golf course. Eagle Springs Golf Course requires accuracy and careful course management, but the layout is still surprisingly accessible for a range of skill levels. As part of recent initiatives and upgrades to the property and management, kids under 15 play free.

Florida Historic Golf Trail
I got to play the course over my Christmas break while in the Destin area. I have been trying to play all the courses listed on the Florida historical golf trail. The courses on the trail are all historically relevant, and can be hit or miss. I went into this round with low expectations.
I can tell you I had so much fun playing this course. The atmosphere was friendly and casual. The layout of the course was super interesting, with “trick play” holes on the back 9. My senior dad, and my brother in law (who doesn’t golf often), played a little 3 person scramble to keep it non-serious.
The greens were very challenging and small, which is common for older style courses. They were in good shape and rolled evenly enough for us. The only course condition comment would be a little more tee box rotation to minimize wear, and the fairway on 10. I hit a bomb drive dead straight, but ultimately could not find the ball, as it plugged in very wet ground.
I love a more natural course that keeps the off fairway bit more natural, so I really liked this course. Overall just based on the setting, people, and good time I had, give this course super high marks.
Nice cart paths
You could tell they are trying to improve the course. Cart paths are all new. Course could use better yardage markings from the fairways and the tee boxes. Some tee boxes were just mostly weeds. Greens were decent. Hole 17 needs totally redone, fairway was mostly nonexistent for your tee shot. Overall $25 hot tee time was about right.
Worth the drive
Its not Kelley p, but for a $20 9am round it's well worth it! Greens have a few dead spots that don't effect putts. Layout is nice.
Fairways and greens were in decent shape. Tee boxes were below average but it looked as if they were building up some new ones. There is basically no cart path, just dirt and sand, but hey it is not my personal golf cart so it was fun to offroad it a little. Good value for the price and staff was awesome.
Improving all the time!
Great course for the price. Pace of play is usually brisk. Small greens—couple with rough patches; most are fine. Fairways overall good. Tee boxes need to be leveled and need more grass—the worst part of the course. Cart paths are intermittent, but I think that improvement is coming. I like the layout and the saucer-like greens make for a challenge on a relatively short course. Fairways need yardage markers.
Challenging Course
Good course; ball emended where considered lost on par 3 hole #3 (very wet conditions after rain; they are working on drainage) ; Small greens promotes accuracy :) ; I consider this to be my go to course for every day play :) I give this course a good review overall :)
Economical, fun option
We played 9 holes mid-day in early December for $15 a piece. Some greens have brown spots. One or two were gorgeous. The rest were somewhere in the middle. The cart paths are dirt and we’re at times a bit hard to locate. But, the 90 degree rule isn’t in play, which helps. Lots of sand and some dry grass in the rough. However, if you hit is straight you’re golden seeing as the fairways were in decent condition. Overall, we found the course as a whole to be playable. If you just want to have some fun and do it economically this is a great fit for you. We’re in the area a lot and will plan to play here again. It’s a muny. Begin a round here with that perspective and you’ll enjoy.
Eagle Crest - Defuniak Springs
Course is a bit rough in spots, but good enough for the money. Several holes we under repair (notably 10 and 11), several had greens that were pretty rough (especially 18), and the clubhouse restaurant is a victim of covid for the time being. The layout is pretty good and hole layout was pretty good taking into account the rolling terrain and water. The biggest challenge is the small greens. An errant tee or approach shot can leave a very tough pitch depending on where the pin is. Staff is very friendly. Overall a decent municipal course for the price..
Getting better every round
Have played several rounds here over the last few months. The greens are filling in quite nicely. I love all the improvements that have been made. Waiting patiently for the repairs to be made on #11.
could be incredible
This could be the best golf course around. But the tboxes they should use are destroyed have not been removed and the new tboxes are flat and small.11th hole is closed. Too many par 3 not enough par 5. Greens are garbage on 50% of the holes. Fairways are nice I like the course but needs to be better taken care of. You get what you pay for. Outside the fairways and cart paths are straight garbage and gives you the feeling you are playing on a part time cow pasture.
1 hole short
Paid for 18 holes only got to play 17. Hole eleven was out of commission totally. Should of been told that was the case. Would not have played.
Greens could use some work
I like this course. It has been greatly improved over the last couple of years. I love the way they have cleared a lot of the underbrush outside the rough and between holes. It really gives the place a professional look and plays somewhat easier for the average amateur. Not that it made it way easier, just easier to find a ball. The only problem I had for the most part were the greens. Several had very patchy spots that needed to be grown in. They putted well for the most part and not vying for the Ryder Cup, we just chose to move your ball out of the rough line. We will be back I am sure.
Eagle Springs Golf Course
Played here before and a lot of changes being made for the good. Joined today and look forward to what comes next.
Priorities
The following is a list of priorities!
1- Cart paths are terrible
2- Greens need turf specialist
3- Curt the grass in rough areas to help define holes
4-Allignment of holes for better course layout
5- Rules in place for pace of play
Becoming a Gem
I like this course a lot. They have really improved over the years; however, some of the greens are becoming suspect. Even though they are iffy they still putt pretty true.
