Not Worth the $
Past few years since property will now become a housing development for the public course, the amount of attention has gone way down. Traps are poor at best, unmaintained, greens scratchy and fairway areas burned out despite all the rain we've had, and clearly not worth the amount of money anymore. What a shame, was a premier course for many years.
Sad to see the condition
RB - East WAS one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is in terrible shape with weeds everywhere, bunkers are just puddles & rocks and bug infested. Stay Away!
I don't know how they get away charging $ 95 for a round. Clubhouse and staff though is very friendly.
West (Private) is still in good shape.
Fair
Bunkers appear to be untouched all year. Filled with casual water, weeds off all sorts, grass, rocks ECT. Only thing missing was sand. Tee boxes a little bear up as well. Fairways had considerable fungus. On three plus side greens rolled well. Heard they were selling 18 holes too a developer.
Good Round
I have always enjoyed Royce Brook, a nice track in a quiet location. The public course is nice, but there has been no sand in the MANY sand traps all season, plus there has been water in many of them for months- not good. We realize half or more of this course is closing down because of the housing development they unfortunately agreed to, but really, how much does sand cost?!? They took a great course and made it difficult to enjoy with these rock hard or flooded traps
A mixed bag
Royce Brook has two courses the East which is public and the West which is private. Played the East course today. Staff was very friendly and we played as a twosome which was appreciated. This was our first time playing this course. The overall layout of the course and holes was quite good. The fairways, rough and greens were very nice. Pace of play was ok. We played behind a foursome that was a bit slow but playing as a twosome we expected to wait on some holes and shots.
However we have never seen or played on a course that had sand traps as poorly maintained as the ones on this course. The traps were filled with dirt with weeds and water and have seemed to never been raked which was a shame because the placement of the bunkers was excellent and if cleaned out and filled with proper sand (as is done on the West course) this course could be really nice.
Additionally there are no hole yardage markers on the tee boxes, no map of the holes on the scorecard, there was no drinkable water on the whole course and no cart came around. Stopped at the halfway house for drinks and snacks and it was closed.
This course has a chance to be really nice if they cared about making some basic improvements but it seems like they don't.
Not the Course I remembered! NO SAND........MUD bunkers!!!
This is not the course I remembered; the sand bunkers and immediate area are not well maintained at all. They should be called MUD bunkers. Edge of bunkers not maintained at all, overgrown with weeds. Not worth the money and will not play there again
Poorly maintained
The sand traps are filled with weeds and standing water. There are no ball washers, trash receptacles, or water jugs. The fairways and greens are nice, but the rest of the place is run down
Bunkers were underwater
The bunkers are never tended here. Theyre basically lakes. 95 bucks for that is crazy
Not happy
Sand traps were filled with water and weeds. A ripoff for $95. I’ve played here before and it was much nicer. Something’s going on there. Super slow round. 5 hours.
Underinvested course
Sand traps were terrible. No drainage and overgrowth around all traps. No one at the pro shop. Not worth the price.
Poor conditions
Course had a great layout but EVERY single bunker was full of water anx unplayable, some tee boxes either had a fungus or weeds sprouting up. Also the nats were out of control, need to throw some pesticides down. My playing partner and I were guessing the shortcomings came from a lack of funding.
Traps need to drain and in need of sand
The course has good fairways and greens. The sand traps are filled with water and where the traps are low with water, there is no sand.
Challenging and rewarding
Very fun course! Challenging at times but overall not to hard. My only gripe is the sand traps. The east course has a lot of sand traps with stagnant water. Some of them have turned into small ponds. Other than that very nice course.
Booked a 10:30 for the East Course. When I arrived they say there is a tournament on East Course and they can not get us out for about an hour. Then the starters advise that the privateWest course is available and you can play quickly , but , it will cost and additional $25 which the starter pocketed as it was not the course policy. So they did not honor my tee time and coerced an additional amout out of me. The sand traps around the greens have no sand whatsoever, except on 2 holes. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were nice. Would not return until they overall the bunkers.
Down hill slide
Our group plays this course every year and the condiditons have gradually have gone down hill. 10 years ago, this course was a resort-style course. One of the features of this course is the numerous bunkers around the fairways and the greens. The bunkers have little or no remaining sand and is down to the base clay. There was standing water in almost all the bunkers not allowing us to play out of the traps and forced to do a drop short of the bunker, which takes a lot of the fun out of the course. The greens are riddled with ball marks, but if your putt avoids them, it is a true roll. Stuggling to say that $65 for a cart is worth it.
