a nicklaus gem (is there any other kind?)
our golf group recently hit 5 courses in the Bend area for a trip/tournament. we chose Pronghorn as our final round destination. having noticed over the years that i am a big fan of nicklaus designs i was very excited for this course.
i wouldn't say it disappointed, but bend offers plenty of stiff competition, and this ended up being my second favorite course of the trip to Tetherow.
however, this course is magic! the conditions were immaculate. the pro shop, the caddies, and the starters were all super friendly and welcoming.
it's a pretty long course, so expect to hit a lot of drivers. i prefer a little more variety, but didn't have much choice. definitely a good idea to keep the ball in play too... it gets pretty punishing when you go offline.
the whole property is quite beautiful, and the holes fit the landscape nicely. i wouldn't say there is a huge variation between holes, but it all flows nicely.
unfortunately i chose this round to play my worst of the trip, so i have some inherent negativity about the course, but just based on the layout and the condition this course is a must play. the price is steep, but it definitely has an exclusive vibe. just check out the google maps view of the course... there is nothing around for miles! very cool!
Pronghorn
Facilities were great, Thought signage between holes should be better. Made a couple of wrong turns.
Early season round
Greens pretty slow compared to summertime; fairways pretty good shape. Beware of windy days; makes the course much more challenging. Two birdies on back nine saved my day.
Used Golf Now. Got good green fee, but paid $30 for cart.
One of the best Winter Rounds
5th time playing Pronghorn. Always a great layout and course. Winter conditions were expected. Semi lunched fairways and slow greens. Fairways were browned due to no watering. Overall, to play somewhere that is dry and in resort level conditions for under $100 it’s a great purchase. Played 18 holes in 2 hr 45 minutes using cart (cart path only) could have been quicker if I just walked. Cart GPS monitors always very helpful.
Aeration was completed way too late
For the fourth year in a row, the aeration schedule is completed too late in the fall. Healing will not complete until late April to mid May. If they are still charging full price stay away until summer.
Excellent Course and Conditions
The course was in excellent condition and pretty challanging, especially the greens. Excellent practice facilities too. I loved the course, however, I was disappointed that there were no restaurants, cafe's, or snack bars open. There was a refreshment cart. The Pro Shop must have closed around 4 PM so Wife did not have a chance to spend a lot of money shopping after our round.
Don’t use the motorbikes
Motorbikes are terrible but love the course!
The bikes are heavy and unwieldy. Not safe and way too much effort to use. Not sure why they donn’t have the Finn bikes which are great.
Nicklaus Course is challenging but worth every penny.
First time playing this course, we had a blast. Definitely was crowded, and there were some slow people in front of us, but we made the most of it. The problem was the people behind us were frustrated with us because of their slow play. But beyond that, the course was immaculate, and was a super fun course. Definitely challenging, the amenities and the resort is off the charts. Must play in Central Oregon!
