Birdsfoot Golf Club gets its name from the birdsfoot trefoil that covers the course, budding with small yellow flowers. Mature trees also blanket the course, making it an especially scenic round in the fall. The front nine has a links-style layout with more open holes while the back nine has a parkland landscape with trees framing most of the holes. What both nines have in common is the rolling terrain that provides some tricky uneven lies throughout. It is a golf course that requires a good deal of accuracy but it is not overly punishing if you are slightly errant. There are some good eagle opportunities on the course's par 4s and par 5s, though it is also home to four of the toughest par 3s in the Pittsburgh area.

2nd time playing

My son took me to Birdsfoot for my birthday and I had a great time. The up and down layout makes you do a lot of guessing about which clubs to use. I am used to Florida and the flatness of the courses so this is a real challenge. I loved it. We hit our tee shots on 16 with a big wind behind then the rains came and kind of ruined the last 3 holes.

Weekday Round

I've been here before and enjoyed the great layout, but have had issues with pace of play. This time I was playing under threat of thunderstorms (the radar showed the storms missing to the northwest but people still stayed home) so the course was not crowded on a Monday late afternoon.

I teed off at 3:48 and finished playing at around 6:50pm. There was a threesome in front of me but they allowed me to play through on No. 3, so I made excellent time. The course was wet from rain earlier in the day but the bunkers looked to be in pretty good shape. The greens were a bit slow due to the rain, and they were pretty marked up from golfers who didn't fix their pitch marks. Some of the tee boxes were also pretty chewed up, but not so much that they interfered with my tee shots.

As on my previous visits, the staff here were very friendly and made me glad to be visiting again. They currently have a special for weekday membership for less than $200/yr, which is CRAZY. If I lived closer to the course and could play weekdays more often I would take them up on it...if you play 5 rounds the membership pays for itself.

Beware the Rolling Greens

A packed Saturday greeted us at this track about an hour northeast of Pittsburgh, but despite all of the bodies on the course the friendly staff managed to keep things moving.
The course was dry and greens were rolling extremely fast, too fast for their spiked up condition. Everyone in our foresome lost strokes to an online putt that jumped away from the hole because of an overly spiked up line.
The course is a classic uphill and downhill Western PA layout that will test your ability to judge how much extra club you need to reach an elevated green. #9 is a medium-long par 3 that is 100% carry over a ravine to a long, but slender green. #13 is one of the toughest par 5s in the area since it plays dead uphill. Bomb a drive AND a 3 wood and your work is not yet done.
#18 requires a 250 yard carry over a bunker complex that splits the fairway in half before it dives over one last hillside roller coaster style to a green near the property's original farmhouse that now stands as a clubhouse.
There might not be a more friendly staff on any course in the area and the bar is worth checking out.

BirdsFoot

Beautiful day for golf with the exception of the greens which were littered with ball marks an bare spots on every green. Fairways and bunkers in nice shape. Explanation I got in pro shop was "it's a public course"

August 4th

Loved the course, got it for $25 each on golf now. Only problem were the greens were trashed and needed rolled badly. Might have been due to monster rain storms over the weekend, but a gem 40 minutes from downtown. Will be back for sure

Bittersweet

Love the course. Many great experiences there. Tons of play left greens really chewed up, though. Great value but really disappointed we were paired up with another twosome for no reason. All in all, great deal and sure to return.

Slow Sunday

Course was very nice although a little wet from recent showers. Pace of play was horrendous, a lot of waiting around so bring some beer and extra balls.

Ranger was non existent except at the start and one pass thru when he told us to stay to cart paths.

A Round of Golf with SLOW Play and DISTRACTIONS

The course overall was okay but fairways were very wet but there was no rain. The course started us on the back but the right side green bunker had men working and there was a lot of worker traffic which I found distracting. Play was delay at each hole so you could not establish a rhythm and added to the difficult conditions someone was always on your tail pushing you which added to the difficulty = NOT a RELAXING ROUND. Additionally when we made the turn teeing off at 1 there was a trail of golf carts making there way out into the course which was a shot gun start corporate function which slowed play even further!!! Play was so slow that part of the twosome in front could not even finish his round. This is the 2nd time we have played this course and there were kids playing in golf carts riding back and forth during play I decided to give this course the 2nd try but I do not think I will play the course again - TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS that were not GOLF related!!!!

Busy Course

This was my second time playing at Birdsfoot and both times (Saturday afternoons) the course was super busy with large events. Pace of play is slower than average due to the congestion on the course. I would suggest calling the course to find out if there are events planned when you want to play - if they have an afternoon start to their event you will want to go out at least an hour prior to the start.
Overall, beautiful course that is well worth a visit.

Great layout

I really enjoy playing at Birdsfoot. The course has a nice layout with some challenges for accuracy. The most recent day I played, the greens were a bit slow. Faster play in the mornings. Friendly workers...Great website with helpful hints and 360 degree views of each hole. The scenery is beautiful and I love the "faces in the trees."

Birdsfoot

Course was in decent shape. The greens were a bit beat up. Some of the tees were a little rough as well. Fairways were good. Bunkers were heavy. Did not have an issue with slow play today.

Nice Layout. Decent Conditions. Poor Pace of Play

I play Birdsfoot a lot. Sometimes as a single during non-peak times and sometimes with others during peak times. The pace of play on weekends is insane. I have pledged to not play here again on the weekends as it always takes 5+ hrs. Even if you go later in the day, it is awful.

I love the layout, the greens are decent for the amount of play they get but the bunkers need a lot of work. There are always filled with water if it has rained in prior days.

Waiting and more waiting

Only play here once a year, because every round is over 5 hours. If they could cut avg pace of play to 4 hours, I'd consider playing there more. Great layout with some awesome holes. But if you have to stand on the t box for 20 plus minutes on 2 or 3 consecutive holes, it's just too much.

BFE

This course is in the middle of nowhere. The courses bunkers where filled with water from the day before. It seemed like the staff made no effort to pump out the water. Pretty challenging course. Would not recommend the drive for most people.

Good Day

We had a threesome for a 2:45 tee time. Finished our round in 4 hrs flat while still being slowed at times. We got the hot deal so the green fees were a great deal. The biggest complaint with Birdsfoot is that their greens are sometimes chewed up because of the amount of play they get. The greens where decent this time around. All in all a good day.

6-hour round

+Beautiful course
+Good condition tee to green
+friendly staff

-6 hour round
-no food/beverage service during round sans the clubhouse
- no apology/concession for pace of play

If your game is predicated on a reasonable pace of play you should go elsewhere. I've never played this course in under five hours. The pace is likely due the shear number of hackers allowed on the course and the aggressively spaced tee times.
