Pittsburgh National Golf Club
About
Formerly known as Deer Run, Pittsburgh National Golf Club has undergone major renovations since management has changed hands over the years, including complete reconditioning of the greens and the addition of 60 new renovated bunkers. The championship golf course that exists today is more challenging than the original though it has retained the same playability. With no blind shots to be found and wide fairways that are player-friendly, the course is inviting to beginners and also offers a casual but interesting round for more advanced players. During the renovation, the club also added a practice facility that includes a grass driving range with heated hitting stalls for year-round use, it is one of the only public grass ranges in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a putting green and chipping area with sand bunkers.

this course has a variety of quality holes
Played the course on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon but was behind a league of very slow players, fortunately they quit after 9 holes. Course was only average condition, some brown areas in fairways, skunks or other critters had dug up some areas of the turf looking for grubs to eat. Greens were good, speed was above average. This course has a quality lay out of holes, some open some tree lined. For a golf now price of only $21.00 you can"t go wrong.
Great Price...course could be in better shape
Nice, challenging layout from the back tees. Some tee shots out of chutes. Greens were fast, consistent, and held iron shots when hit good. Tees need work. They are bumpy and bare. Need rolled and sodded.
Roughs and some fairway sections are burnt but it has been very dry for the last two months in SWPA. We started 35 minutes late because of an outing/scramble. We were told that by #7 they would be done and we would go faster. Front nine moved well but the scramble was still in front us us until #14. Round took 4:40. Too long.
Once beautiful course gone downhill
I've played this course a handful of times but this was the first time I've been there in a couple of years. I know it's been a dry summer but the fairways were like concrete in seemingly every landing area. Tee boxes were rough. Greens were kept decent but we're not rolling true at all. I guess it's gonna be a spring/early summer course for me from here on out. All that being said, when it is in good shape; you can see how beautiful it can be.....
In great shape
This course was in great shape. The fairways were well watered and easy to hit off of. The only bad thing is their league times. They give out tee times that conflict with their leagues, so when you get to the back nine you often have to wait on league players.
The course was dry and hard.
Due to the lack of rain the course was very dry. It appeared that they were working on the sprinkler system so many of the fairways weren't being watered. This is an excellent course for the money. It gives you many teeing options to challenge most peoples game.
PGH net
I've played the course many times and loved it in the past. It's going downhill. Fairways need watered , greens aren't in good conditions. Overall and average course asking a premium price. Don't think i'll be going back this season. I've played there 9 times this season.
Beautiful and challenging course
This course is a must play! Staff was on point. From the gentleman that brought our cart to Sam and Jamie in the bar! Course has plenty of challenges for every level of player. Greens were super fast but consistent . But it's been in the 80's for two weeks! Already making plans to play in the fall!
Slow play
I love the layout. The course played firm. Challenging. The pace of play was unbearable at times. We started as foursome and lost our other two as a result of the slow play. Another twosome joined us and quit a few holes later. They let an inexperienced five-some out on a Saturday morning. We saw one ranger the entire day and he did not address the slow pace of play. PNGC has the potential to be one of the top destinations in the area but not with 5+ hour rounds.
Review
Average. Average. Average. Greens bumpy and inconsistent.
Okay
For $30, pitt national is a pretty good value. With that being said, it's still not the golf course it was 5 years ago. The layout it great, but the conditions leave a lot to be desired.
Nice course for the discount price
Our foresome played Monday afternoon and had to let 5 onesomes or twosomes thru, somewhat distracting being pushed at times. Course in good shape considering all the rain recently. Nice layout, always enjoy playing here. Bar / restaurant was CLOSED when we finished at 5:15!
Recommended
Course in good shape considering the time of year and the awful weather in Pittsburgh in 2015. I do have to say that there needs to be more time in between groups. On Sunday morning, groups were scheduled 7 minutes apart and as a result we waited on nearly every shot. It had little to do with cart path only (due to wet conditions), just questionable tee times. Otherwise, an enjoyable round and I suggest going there.
Golf Course is a Thumbs Up
Having played this course since its inception, this club has been through good times, on the brink of closure only to be saved and for the most part returned to its heralded beginning.
This course is well designed; with large greens, wide fairways, and multiple tee boxes that provide a fair challenge for all skill levels. The addition of a too small short game area is welcome although I never could understand “no chipping” signs on the putting green (five times the size of the short game green) that mirrors what players find on the golf course. Despite the rain over the last few weeks, greens and fairways were quite good! Unfortunately that same rain has played havoc with tees and bunkers.
My middle rating and the head-scratcher is the lack of customer service. In fairness, the gentleman at the bag drop was really in good spirits and very personable. The Pro Shop, restaurant and rangers all seemed to be collectively having a poor day. BTW- the new restaurant is appealing, only had adult beverages post round.
Not sure this course deserves the the premium GF’s it charges. However, I recommend the golf course.
Pgh national
Only played 13 holes when rain came. Was going to try to wait it out and have lunch but was told kitchen closed and only serving hot dogs and cold sandwiches
Very nice course
Very nice course, pretty tough. Staff was nice aside from the guy who brought us our cart who was pretty rude. Other than that great time.
Good Value
Course does not drain particularly well but an excellent layout and very good value for the money. Greens were in very good shape. There could be more organization in the pro shop in terms of having a starter make sure players are starting on time. Additionally the course was cart path only when I played but there were no signs indicating this nor was I notified at the pro shop. Overall a good public course and a fantastic value for the Golfnow specials.
Lame
The course has weeds in the fairways and there a bunch of dry spots. They are now in my opinion a low tier golf course and only worth the $18 it costs to play 18 holes
course is in good shape
for the amount of rain we have had lately. we were able to go everywhere needed without any mud problems.
entire course was in good shape, greens were great, even the sand traps were playable if need be.
Fathers Day Round.
Course was in good shape. Especially for all the rain we had. Turned out to be a Great Fathers Day round. The greens were in great shape to. For how wet they were they still played fast (showed who the rookies were "My Dad") Booking threw Golf Now only took minutes to do. The ranger was out on full patrol to which is a good thing to keep play moving. Play can get slow there but they took a couple trees out to speed play up. Also if your a 5-10 handicap you might want to play from the tips. Test yourself its a great course to try. Also took 22.00 off my buddies. WINNING.......
