Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club - Lost Gold Course
About
The Lost Gold Course at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club stays true to the club's name with a layout that snakes across the desert landscape of the Superstition Mountains. It is one of two golf courses at the club designed by Jack Nicklaus and his sons, the other being the harmoniously named Prospector Course. Both golf courses have the signature risk-and-reward design that is a Nicklaus trademark. The Lost Gold Course has strategic bunker placements and smaller greens of the two courses, giving it a higher shot value. The links-style design features generous fairways and water hazards that come into play on a few holes.

Disappointing
We've played the Superstition Mountain courses before and found them exceptional. Unfortunately, this time there was a tournament on one course and the Lost Gold course that we were playing had the greens recently punched and sanded (no mention on Golf Now BTW). It was a pay on-line green fee but when it was our turn to go, they put a group that had a member in it out first resulting in a slightly slower pace than if we had been put out first - we had the tee time in front of them but they put them out first. Also, Because of the tournament on the other course, we only saw the beverage cart once and that was not until the back nine. Superstition Mountain is a great facility. Unfortunately, this eperience was not up to that standard.
Wonderful course
Very difficult course, well maintained and with people who play fast. A excellent experience.
Beautiful, well manicured, challenging course.
Beautiful Course. Great view of Superstition Mountain from most holes. Well manicured from tee box to green. Nicklaus designed course with plenty of strategically placed bunkers. Excellent service. Great round of golf. Only negative would be it lacks a signature hole.
Superstition Mountain
We enjoyed playing Superstition Mountain again because of the wonderful course condition and all of the great views. The staff were all very friendly and the pace of play was good.
One of the top tracks in the Valley
We tried to play this course several years ago after following the LPGA around it for three days. Apparently then it wasn't possible during the winter and spring. What a break that times are a little tougher now and we had a chance to play. It's worth the drive from Scotsdale.
EXCELLENT CONDITION
It's summertime so we practically had the course to ourselves. What a great time we had on a great course.
Where are we?
No course map, no gps in carts, not well marked to go from hole to hole-- our mistake, we did not buy a guide book in the pro shop before we headed out -- so we had difficulty guessing distances to avoid hazards. Each fairway had desert strips across them making it a guessing game as to hitting over or layup. The course and facility were beautiful - great views and a very relaxing round of golf – definitely a course I would like to play again!
Excellent Experience
Thought the course was in meticulous shape. Played Lost Gold and really enjoyed the course and scenery. The facilities were excellent, great range and first class staff. The playing time was 4 3/4 which was a little slow but doable. The course is difficult but has plenty of room off the tee. Thought the added touches like free bottled water around the course was a nice touch. All in all I would recommend Superstition Mountain for a completely enjoyable experience.
wide and great shape
would rate this course as a must. staff great , super keeps in terrifoc shape, greens fast but smooth, nice layout congrats to Jack N.
Outstanding service, excellent course.
Service was outstanding: free valet service, locker, bottled water & ice. Course was in excellent shape and challenging. Greens were not in pristine shape, but were fast and rolled true. Will definately play again on my next trip to Phoenix.
Prospector Course not memorable but is in a beautiful if somewhat isolated setting. I believe Lost Gold has more character.
It wasn't a great start as the security man at the gate didn't have us on his list; the pro had never heard of us but said it was ok he could squeeze us in; and then nobody bothered to notify the starter of our existence! It was a beautiful day and the whole complex at Superstition is immaculately maintained. The round took 4.5hrs which is too long for our liking and difficult to maintain concentration. The layout was not memorable (Prospector Course only) and there were huge distances between greens and tees. The clubhouse was unbelievably confusing in its layout, people kept going round in circles and asking where the exit was! And all the light bulbs were low energy 2watt stuff which meant you couldn't actually see anything inside - forget about looking at the wine list or menu! Overall, it was a very nice day, Superstition is in a magnificent setting, the views were fabulous and low handicappers will enjoy the experience. We got a reduction of approx 40% on the green fees so were happy with the deal. It is not a course we would rush back to. I think the green fees at Greyhawk are similar to Superstition and that was a course we would revisit.
great corse
played Lost gold tee to greens was in excellent shape. The greens however were average at best.
Excellent from all aspects.
From top to bottom a fantastic course to play. Much like the private clubs I belong to.
awesome course
i would highly recommend this course. the conditions were perfect.
Course was terrific. We made good decision to play from appropriate tees!
Course was in great condition. Greens were very quick and took a couple holes to get used to them, but were very true and fun to putt. Nicklaus always tries to mess with your perception of a shot, like more room on a drive than he let's you see, or harder shot to green than it appears! We played appropriate tees and that was a real good decision. We played Prospector course and highly recommend. Great experience in every way, especially if your handicap is 10 or less!
Great Course, Need Better Rangers
It is a great course. however the play was slow. No rangers. we needed to skip the last 3 holes to finish by dark. the two groups ahead each had a hole open, however no rangers to move them along.
I thought we were playing behind Sergio the group was so slow.
Deserving of its rating . Top shelf golf and facilities
Fairways and rough are perfect. Greens were generally the same with some exceptions , probably due to the cold January.
Tees offer quality experience for higher handicaps, do not be afraid to move up ! Staff was organized but very busy. Look for HOT deals on Golfnow , I played for $95.
We have had a great experience every time we've played it.
We were disappointed that we didn't get to play Prospector like we had scheduled. There was a mix up on days and we played Lost Gold - again. Lost Gold is a nice course too but we have not played Prospector. Maybe next time :)
I was not disappointed. Much better than my expectations.
I played Feb.8, '13. 60 degrees. Sunny. The course was in great shape for this time of year greens fast and true. Staff was friendly, the range was in good shape. The members we met were very friendly and love to talk about their club. Shows me that they care and are treated well by the employee's. I played "The Prospector" course. Look forward to getting back there to play "The Lost Gold" course. Hopefully before they go private.
