Best Pittsburgh Course I’ve Player Yet
I recently moved to Pittsburgh, less than a month ago. After playing a handful of local courses Blackthorne easily is my favorite. The course was in excellent condition and the pace of play was phenomenal. It is on the shorter side being only a par 33 for nine holes, but as I understand it will be an 18 hole course soon. I hope this will add more distance to the course. The area around the course is amazing as well. It was very quiet and peaceful. I genuinely had a great time on the course. The only gripe I had with Blackthorne was the carts shutting off in strange areas of the course. They shut off if you go to a restricted area or too close to the greens etc. but there were a few times where my cart warned me of shutting off in the middle of the fairway. All in all I had a great experience here and I will definitely be returning!
P.S. the 9th hole is beautiful (picture attached)
They didn't want to accept the GolfNow app
They almost made me pay at the desk for what I paid on GolfNow app. They finally let us play.
Disappointing
I expected this course to be in top notch shape. It isn’t! Bunkers (sand?) are uncared for. Greens are slow and have just been aerated. The gravel caret paths are extremely uneven and a rough ide. To be fair, the fairways are in excellent shape.
Great course once it is kept up
This course is very nice for the price. The fairways, greens and tee boxes are very kept up. The cart paths are not very good at all and the bunkers fill up to the top with water that you can’t find your ball in some of them. Once they spend the money on keeping up with the course it will be a top notch 9 hole course
Time to Pull The Plug on this one
Once upon a time this course was going to be the crown jewel of Western Pennsylvania golf. 18 holes designed by Arnold Palmer himself. Arnie got 9 holes in, and then......
Then the money apparently ran out and the development stalled. The 9 holes that are open are scattered about the original design and make no sense at all in the matter in which they are played. The course is not walkable and several holes and minutes apart linked by worn out gravel paths that beat the daylights out of what is left of the cart.
The clubhouse is still an old GE Capital trailer and the parking lot remains unpaved.
While parts of the course hint at the genius that Arnie was in the process of unleashing most of it is lost in the frustration of playing a course that seems to be open only because nobody can think of anything else better to do with the ground.
This 9 hole course was in great shape for the time of the year.
To fully appreciate the current status of the course you need to understand that there are 9 holes there, but they are not a front nine or a back nine. Nine of 18 were put in with the understanding that the remaining 9 would be integrated with the nine that are there. I guess finances precluded the remaining nine to be put in and it is a little cumbersome riding the dirt golf cart paths to navigate the current layout.
Time for this course to become 18 holes or close
This course is well maintained and a nice layout with elevation changes. Unfortunately, it's a nine hole course, with large spacing between the clubhouse and #1 and #4 & #5, with poor gravel paths between these holes. Golf carts are in poor condition and don't start for a few seconds when you depress the gas. Their solution to lack of play; cut costs. That never works. It's time to invest in their asset or close.
9-hole course not 18.
Because the other 9 holes were never finished you have to play the same holes twice. Unfortunately the cart paths are gravel and have lots of issues. It takes nearly 5 minutes to get to the tee box from the clubhouse. Most of the sand traps are washed out, but the greens, tee boxes and fairways are in decent condition.
Using golf now and getting a great price is the only way to play this course.
Loved the course can't wait to play it again.
Even though it's only a 9 hole course, I played the blacks and the blue tees. each set had it's own challenges. Even my wife played the reds and the whites. wish they would finish the other 9.
i like this course alot
this course has nice fairways, and the greens are medium speed you can score well. i plan on golfing here many more times. i cant wait for them to finish the other 9 holes. i hope they keep the price in check.
Very nice course.
Very nice nine hole course. The cart paths are rough and just a trailer for a club house. Good price.
Interesting layout and well maintained, but horrible setup
First of all, golfers should be aware that this is a 9 hole course! This was far from apparent, and when we couldn't find the 10th tee, the person working in the proshop informed us that "you just play from 1 again. Start from different tees to make it more interesting." This was FAR from clearly marked, so we had no idea we had signed up to play a 9 hole course.
In fact, nothing at this course was well marked. There is no signage of any kind to indicate which hole is where. Not on the cart path (very rough, washed out gravel), not on the tee box, not even on the flag. We played hole #9 thinking it was #5 because of the inadequate hole number indication. Finding the holes was difficult not only because of the lack of signage, but the confusing, interweaving, and unmarked cartpath network. The first tee was a good 5 minute ride from the "clubhouse" (double wide trailer in an unmaintained gravel lot surrounded by weeds, without so much as a hotdog available for lunch) that required negotiation of several forks in the road, none of which indicated the direction of the tee. We teed off a good 15 minutes behind our scheduled tee time after we got lost several times attempting to find the first tee.
Despite this, the course was well designed and was interesting to play. Each hole had an attractive layout with many interesting features. The course was very well hydrated and generally maintained, although the rough was ROUGH when we played, like 6 or 7 inches long. Made chipping around the greens a little frustrating. Greens and fairways were lush and well kept.
I would play the course again ONLY if offered for a very heavily discounted rate, and just for a quick practice round. Despite the quality of play, it appears the management spent all of its money on the landscaping of the course and literally zero on the clubhouse, cart paths, and other amenities. I'm not the kind of guy who normally cares about a luxurious golf experience, but this was almost a little difficult to play because of the poor organization.
Nice course, rough cart paths. Need to finish other 9 holes!
A odd 9 holes with par at 33 and no par 5 holes, but what they had was enjoyable to play. Cart paths were not finished and the layout was irregular- you could tell that these 9 holes were not in sequence. I'd bet that #5 will be either #1 or #18 when they finish the course.
Wide fairways and big greens are both well maintained!
Great conditions. Fairways fantastic
The course was in great shape. The fairways and greens were great. Course was not too challenging, but enjoyable.
Not bad
The course is in good condition but because it was built to put in 18 holes and only has 9 there is no smooth transition to the course. The traps need a lot of work> Wish they would finish it !!
