Walked

A hidden gem that's overshadowed (rightly so) by Greywalls.

A deceptively tough course that is fun and challenging to play for a bargain price. The front nine looks deceptively easy but tee shots and green approaches must be accurate or trouble follows.

The back nine is diabolical. Lots of elevation changes, tight tee shots through chutes of trees, severely sloping fairways, and huge undulating greens that require absolute precision or three-putts will be inevitable.

Course is a tale of two 9's built 40 years apart

The original 9 holes are on the north side of the road and were designed and built by Langford & Moreau. They have their signature large raised greens. Most of the fairway bunkering has been lost; however, if you love their courses, you will enjoy this one.

Langford & Moreau actually designed 18 holes, but only 9 were built. When it came time to add the second 9, they had sold the land where the next 9 would be built.

The newer 9 holes lay on the south side of the road and occupy much hiller terrain. These holes were designed by David Gill.

Play this course with Greywalls for a great 36 hole day.

Golden Age Gem

The Heritage course has some fantastic golden age architecture. You can definitely tell the difference between the holes built in the 20s and the ones built in the 60s, but they both have great qualities. The Langford greens have spectacular character. They're much tougher than they appear. There are some great elevation changes and cool natural features. This course is dwarfed by Greywalls, but it stands on its own as a great track. Greywalls couldn't have existed without this course being good first. If you happen to find your way to Marquette, give both courses at the Marquette Golf Club a try.

9 Wonderful Langford/Moreau holes to experience

The Heritage Course at Marquette GC was in excellent playing condition and I was blessed with a wonderful sunny low 60's afternoon to experience it. Back in the day when the course expanded to 18 the 9 original old school Langford holes were incorporated into the course and re-routed with newer 1960's built holes and they blend in very well.....the finishers on this course are mainly the newer David Gill holes with the the par 5 16th of particular note that features a huge mound in front of the green....a very imposing looking down and up hole from the tee box. Both of the Langford Par 3's on the front nine are absolute historic golf design gems - the 5th and 7th....in between them is a wonderful Langford driveable par 4 with plenty of trouble to protect par. The 12th hole (original Langford 8th) is a demanding long par 4 with requiring a well struck tee shot featuring huge restored swaled green. The 13th (the original finishing 9th) when built had the tee ground next to the now 12th playing across the street at well over 420 but shortened to 327 for safety still provides plenty of challenge requiring an uphill approach shot with a green built into the hillside.....simply put...a very pretty and well designed golf hole at any distance.

Marc Gilmore the Director of Golf at Marquette GC (an extremely nice guy) was most gracious with his time, honored me with a history of the course (original 9 built in 1926) and letting me know that they are in the process of restoring the green size of the outstanding roller coaster Langford greens - two each year. Several have already been restored I believe there's only about 4 left to enlarge. Greens were in excellent shape with proper stimp, sand traps well maintained and all other areas of the course in good order. While overshadowed by the highly rated Greywalls Course on site - the Heritage Course on its own would be enough of a draw for me....and absolutely should not be missed and you should make the trek the UP. Playing Heritage first as a warm up prior to playing Greywalls later in day enhances the golf experience. You can go from outstanding Old School Design to Modern Design to experience all that the wonderful Marquette Golf Club has to offer. Highly recommended.

Worth the 3 hour drive!

Excellent Course located in the Upper Peninsula.
Very rugged fairways with a lot of undulation. I played the course at the end of June and the conditions were fantastic. Very fast greens with challenging tee shots. The only downside is this course is several hours from the Mackinac Bridge! The clubhouse and facilities will not wow you but if you are looking for a great selection of golf holes and pristine conditions, consider playing Greywalls!
