Second time playing Hickory Creek, and oddly neglected to review it the first time. Played it on a Sunday morning with 3 buddies, after a torrential rain overnight. Thought we might be in for more of the same, as storms loomed on the radar.
We paid for nine to start, and the parking lot was empty. Had a twosome in front of us and a foursome behind. Lots of people avoiding what they felt would be a waste of a day. They clubhouse manager and starter were very friendly. We were surprised they allowed carts to drive 90 degrees on the fairways. It was sloshy but no damage was being done.
The course was in incredible shape even with the rain. There was not a lot of standing water, and the fairways and greens played normal. Fairways were well maintained. Greens were medium and held well.
The course itself is very challenging. Lots of elevation changes. Routed through some nice wooded areas through parts of the layout. A nice mix of doglegs thrown in. Greens are on the small side. Need to know where to miss to score well here.
We got lucky that the storms for later didn't materialize. We paid for the other nine at the turn. Manager said the window looked good, which is what we were seeing when we checked. Felt like we stole a round by being one of the few groups playing.
The biggest negative on the course is the bunkers. They're awful, to be honest. Hard, even with all the rain. Lots of weeds in them. Very difficult to predict what they will do. Each of us got in at least one, and the results were worse than they should have been. All four of us left a shot in the first time because of the conditions. I expect hitting in one to cost me a shot on a hole. But not 2. They seriously need to be addressed. That alone brought my rating down on the conditions of what otherwise is a really good course. It won't stop me from playing it again, but it does detract from the experience.
Restaurant closed
Would have rated course higher but restaurant closed until 4pm. We finished at 3:05.
My favorite place
Play here as often as possible. Great course, great rates. Green side Tavern has great food.
Underrated
This course is one of my favorites to play when I come home to visit. Not a country club but the layout is sweet. Hole #3 down through the woods with a downhill green pressed between water on the left and sand to the right…love it. Greens were nice. Typical Michigan grass. Great course for the price.
Bad customer service again and again. Who runs this place?
Confusion in the clubhouse on what tee to send people out on. Lost reservations of tee times. Try to charge admin fees for booking directly on their site. Grumpy old ranger that doesn’t say hi. Couldn’t have had a worse customer experience. That aside, the course was in very good shape and the lady teaching pro and her assistant are super nice. I might go back in a few years.
Taking sticks to the sticks
Never heard of this place before let alone played it. Off a dirt road and a very minimalist entry to an equally laid back attitude from the very friendly staff. Allowed to play on my own and pace of play was very good despite following a few 3’s. Started earlier than tee time and finished within 4 hours.
Shorter course (around 6,000 yds) but it didn’t seem to play like it (mostly because. I am really old). Tee boxes were somewhat beat up but all had a broken tee deposit tray put to good use. Fairways and greens were in great condition, greens a little slower than they looked probably because of the drizzle but played true. Just a 150 yard marker to help. Directions green to tee not always obvious.
There were a few forced carrys but no more than 150 yards from the whites. A couple of excellent looking water surrounded greens especially the 17th. All in all a very enjoyable experience.
Return to familiar surroundings.
We booked this tee time as we traveled through Michigan on a return home from Florida. We moved away 3 years ago and we used to play Hickory Creek every week. The course looks better than ever in our opinion and we were pleasantly surprised at the condition of the fairways and the greens. A couple of the tea boxes were a little worn down probably from the golf traffic that has picked up over the summer.
We received a great rate and the staff were friendly as always to include the bar and grill owner. It was a great welcome home gift for us and we enjoyed our round of golf today. This is a great course that offers both challenge as well as some forgiveness in the fairways. The Greens were rolling true and were quite receptive today and I would consider them at medium speed.
Fantastic course
Great layout friendly staff well conditioned wet from recent rain but still very playable. Will play again and highly recommend.
Hickory Creek GC
My son and I play it perhaps twice a month. We love the course. It is a fun round and a well maintained course. We will return often!
Still a great course
If the management spent as much time on pace of play as they do on watching for 5 somes it could be one of the best. All they have to do is counsel each group on keeping pace. A chronic problem with this course.
Great course for the money. Excellent condition. Tee boxes a bit rough. Greens I.n great shape and challenging. Absolutely going again, especially on a "Hot Deal." Can't do much better than Hickory Creek on a discount
