A Thinking Man's Course

Played this course with three longtime college buddies on a perfect June day. The course is spectacularly chiseled through the rolling hills and woods of northern Oakland County. This is not a course where you just go up an hit the ball. Nearly every shot requires the forethought that, if left in your bag, will leave you in bunker, (all of which have high lips) on a sidehill lie, or with a blind shot to the green. There are two very short par 4s on the back with tight driving and approach windows; don't let the yardage fool you! The greens are frequently tiered and can be tough to read. The 18th is a breathtaking finishing hole. The clubhouse is beautiful, with.a veranda to sit at for a post-round beverage. Staff couldn't have been nicer. In short, a stern test but truly memorable venue. We will be back.

Really Beautiful Track

Consistently rated one of the top courses in metro-Detroit for a reason. I played with a bachelor party so didn't take the round too seriously, which helped. Played 10-27 layout and will not forget the approach back to the clubhouse. Very beautiful course.

Don't waste your time or money

I don't care about the reputation or how nice the course is layed out, do not waste your time or money playing here. You will pay over $100 for an almost 6 hour round. And, because of the pace of play, expect to be hit into multiple times. A decent amount of the tee boxes are covered with unsanded divots and weeds too. Go spend your time and money at a different course.

Pace of play for Sunday September 20th

3hrs and 20 min for 9 holes on Sunday September 20th. A course like that should not pack people back to back. The starter, marshal and ranger all hang out at the tee box disciplining the players and act smart. ranger should be on the course and we have never seen him at all?? Course actually is great, the management should step it up. SHAME, SHAME and BIG SHAME . People come there to have a good time and not frustrated after paying money.

miniature golf greens

Very challenging course if you want narrow fairways with blind shots, plenty of sand traps, lots of hills, and greens with no flat areas.
These greens have significant slopes.....in one case the ball runs down a slope from the pin off the green 30 feet(hole 22 right green. Not sure why the need for two greens here but we watched the foursome in front of us drive across the left green which was hidden by a hill in order to get back to the cart path.)
The course is also quite pricey and they don't give you a discount if you play all 27 holes(which we had to prepay for to reserve a tee time. We would have quit after 18 but had already paid for 27!)
If you like miniature golf style greens, and 3 putting, this is a course for you.
The course designer obviously didn't know anything about course design!

Top notch layout

First time out there, played 10-27. The layout of the course leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. Very unique track and challenging from any tee box you pick. No two holes are alike. Plenty of hard dog legs, elevation and blind drives. Conditions of the tees, fairways, rough and bunkers were top notch. Only complaint would be the greens. While they were very difficult by nature and well designed, there was a lot of damage from unfixed ball marks and occasional littering of geese droppings. Totally understand that these things can't be fully controlled by the facility, but if these greens were in a little better shape, you could name your price and I'd live out there. Overall, highly recommend you give it a shot. The atmosphere alone is worth the price of admission

Is there a 6th Star?

Shepherds Hollow is an incredible golf course that is hands down the best golf course in the area, and it’s not even close. The course is incredibly designed and in impeccable condition. It is attackable, but can be punishing if you make bad shots.

good not great

Nice layout and greens were great condition and fast but there was plenty of sand! Sand in okay to poor condition some of sand was wet/hard. There isn't much water on this course which surprised me since it's supposed to be one of the best. Not going to rush to play again too many more courses to choose from. Overall I wasn't blown away. I played 9 on the second course which I thought was better with more views and 9 on the main course.

Best public course I've played in SE MI. A true "up-north" feel.

Every positive thing you've ever heard about this gem of a facility is absolutely true. I've been wanting to play this course for over a decade, but just haven't gotten around to it. I'm moving to AZ in 2 weeks, so this was at the top of my MI bucket list. I played it at 3pm on a Wed to take advantage of the $55 summer midweek twilight rate, and this course is worth at least double the money. Everything, from the conditioning to the layout to the views, everything is just extraordinary. I've played the Treetops Masterpiece course once before, and this course is basically a spiritual replica in the best sense between the immense undulation and elevation changes, along with the sometimes 20 mile views on some of the teeboxes. In terms of difficulty, it's probably the most difficult course I've ever played tee-to-green, but not necessarily the greens (which I'll get to). The heavily forested feel is just beautiful to behold, but brutal if you're at all claustrophobic off the tee. Is the course long? Yes. But I can't recall one uphill tee shot, but there are countless 30+ ft drops which add a lot of extra yardage for you. For as intimidating as the tee shots can be, the greens are very receptive to solid shots and putt slower than they look. I struck the ball very well, hitting 13 GIR, but only made 3 birdies mainly for leaving putts short giving the greens too much respect. Even 3-putted twice doing that. So yes they're a bit quicker than "normal" courses, but nothing like country club fast like they sometimes look, so give them a good run to score well. All in all, this course is worth double the amount they charge, so don't let that be the only thing holding you back from one of, if not THE best golfing experience in SE MI like I did for too long. This course has it all, and you may even go into the clubhouse after the round to beg the asst. pro to charge you full price for a 2nd 18 lol maybe not, but once you play this course once, you won't not want to play it again! This is type of "Pure Michigan" golf I'm going to miss when moving to the Southwest...

Tough, pretty Arthur Hills layout

If you know Arthur Hills golf courses, this one certainly fits his M.O. -- lots or risk-reward. Challenge the par 5s and miss with trying to go for the green in two and you can lose a ball. With that said, though, I really like the two short par 4s on the back nine that challenge better players to take a chance on driving the green. Beyond that, the course is simply stunning, with elevated tees, beautiful doglegs and undulated greens with some tricky pin positions.
