Great course/great price
Found the course yesterday by accident and it is now my favorite course. Its long and wide open with some challenges. Its a little hilly and very well maintained. Carts ran well and pace of play was excellent.. I have zero complaints!
Fun Course on Great Terrain
Canadian course architect John Robinson designed many courses in eastern Ohio. Turkana Farms was one of them. Course used to be a horse farm that was on rolling terrain. The final project never had bunkers filled with sand, but other than that the course is recommended if in the area.
Perfect for the Price
Loved the Course! Wide open, very forgiving. The only complaint was the crazy amount of bugs, but there's nothing they could do about that. I would definitely play again! The price, at least during the week, was perfect.
Disappointed in additional fees
I want to preface this with that I've been going to Turkana for years, but I was highly disappointed when I went over the past weekend. My friend and I were charged an additional fee for having separate carts. I understand that we are adding additional work for the course by taking separate carts, but I feel that I should not have to pay an additional fee when I am trying to follow CDC guidelines and practice social distancing and ensuring my personal safety. Additionally, there was a large gathering near the clubhouse when we made the turn to the back nine, which was also unsettling.
Additionally, the cart paths were in horrendous shape. I understand these are one of the last things on the list to maintain for courses, but there were several occasions where it was rough riding going up hills where it seemed unsafe.
Great Value
The course has some great views and some challenging holes especially on the back 9. Great people in the clubhouse also.
Made For The Driver
If you like hitting a driver, this course is for you. Wide and mostly treeless fairways combine with large changes in elevation between tee and green, to provide open range launch points for tee box shots where a good drive can hang long enough for the hitter to stand back and admire. Smallish greens nicely sloped but not terribly fast on a wet day. No sand and only couple ponds but a fair number of grass bunkers for increased difficulty. The elements will determine how tough this course will play. A hot, windy, and dry day can add a bunch of strokes to your card. The best attribute of this course is how different it is from most other tracks in the area.
wide open
Good shape with significant elevation changes. Couple of holes were at least 2 clubs uphill on the approach. Greens were tricky but in good shape. Fairways in great shape....nice thing about an open course this time of year is that there were virtually no leaves to contend with. Course must have looked even better when they had sand in the bunkers......several deep grass bunkers on the front.
one of many local courses
This is a beautiful linksy type course but not full blown, you won't find many trees but their still out their . Its a moderately hilly course for the area so you will have days when you'll have to club up or down due to winds. You will have days when it dries out a bit but it drains well on the rainy days also so u can play it on almost any sort of day. The dryness is also a good thing due to the links features of the course. This place is also for the true golfer its a beautiful fun layout for the shotmaker in u but not much else resteraunt etc... Its for true golfers!!!
Elevation changes and greens are key.....
Our first time playing this course and we all enjoyed it very much. Elevation changes and greens made it challenging. Overall the course was in great shape and the greens were receptive and rolled nice... It is open off the tee, but its a links course and they usually are.. Its an hour drive for us and we will play there again.. Nice Course!!!
"Pay Attention" to the walking symbol on Golf Now!
Thought we (2 seniors) were getting 18 holes and cart for $14.00 each including fees. When we got to the course found out this was a walking price(what senior walks this course!). Even though it was my fault for not paying attention to the symbols when booking (I had never seen this walking symbol before) I felt Golf Now could have given some advanced notice of this. They charged us $24.00 for the cart. We are seniors and it ended up costing us more to play through Golf Now than it would of if we just paid the regular fees at the course. Pace of play was excellent. Course in years past had more sand. Removed the sand because they didn't want to take care of it. Overall condition of course was good.
Nice Course
Course in good condition. Not long but greens challenging. Course is open with good views. Play was slow.
okay for the money
Dont like the fact that they dont let you bring your beverages. Course is ok. Could use some big tree's along the road on the front 9. Its horrible on a few holes along the road. You almost have to wait until the cars go by. Other than that its a solid course.
Too early in the season for a accurate review
I've played this course before and later in the season the greens will be fast and challenging. Some of the greens have severe slopes with huge breaks in the putts. The course is very interesting to play.
Challenge yourself
Beautiful and competitive course..Greens are the biggest test for a golfer..5 star rating..
Always a long day here.
Course is one of the better ones around but they dont know how to manage tee times. The course is not very long and the last three times I have went it has been over 5 hours to play 18 holes. I am a 7 handicap player so I play fairly well and rather quick but it seems the tee times are Close together. Played Saturday and at one time there were 7 groups on hole 12 the par 5, no lie. Took us 5 hrs 45 mins to play 18 holes absolutely no ranger and the owners wife said she couldnt leave the desk area to check on golfers. The group that was 6 behind us quit on hole 13 because of the slow play. Good looking course but take a lunch and dinner with you because you will be there for about 5 hrs.
This is an old comment, but wanted to add some clarification for those currently reading. The pace of play at any course is dictated by the golfers, not the clubhouse. In this particular comment, the reviewer stated there was a back up at the 12th tee. This was caused by the golfers. The 11th hole at Turkana is a downhill 300+ par 4 that golfers wait until the green clears because many "think" they can drive the green. More times than not, their ball ends up hooked left into the driving range (where they go look for 10 minutes flipping every ball thinking they'll find theirs) or they slice into 12 fairway causing the groups in front to wait on them. If more golfers learned etiquette, and played the 11th hole how it was designed, the result for their score and the pace of play would be enjoyed by more people.........posted by a former employee / frequent player of the course :)
nice rolling landscape
Course is usually well kept.greens usually a little on the quicker side.not terribley long.but has nice length also. takes many different shots to play this course well.but if played properly it can be done.overall just a great track for those reasons
nice for a quick round
For early spring the course is in good shape. Greens are small with a lot of different breaks, which makes them a challenge to read. Would play again.
Good golf for the area
I have played Turkana for many years. Its my favorite course in the area. If you cant control your approach shot it will be a long day. Some holes are elevated to create a challenge. The greens are my favorite aspect of Turkana. The greens roll true. If you are not a long ball hitter some holes will be a challenge.
What a deal, the course was nice and the people were kind
Greens were challenging, hilly fairways made for a fun round of golf.
A great deal from golfnow.com
I have played Turkana many times over the years, and its a nice little course. There has been no summer burnout in the northeast this year so it has been good and green this year. The greens are fast and undulating and some downhill putts can get away from you. despite the greens being a bit "choppy" (please repair your ballparks) they rolled pretty true. The hilly terrain, and sloped greens are the course's most challenging feature. All in all, It's a good course.
You shouldn’t be mad at $5 when you are using extra gas and yes you usually see people when playing golf.
If your that scared don’t go golfing.
